Wavefront-optimized surface retreatments of refractive error following previous laser refractive surgery: a retrospective study

Background:Retreatments are sometimes necessary to correct residual or induced refractive errors following refractive *** different combinations of primary treatment methods and retreatment techniques have been studied,however,few studies have investigated wavefront-optimized(WFO)technology for retreatment following primary refractive *** study aimed to report the outcomes of WFO photorefractive keratectomy(PRK)retreatments of refractive error following previous laser refractive surgery with PRK,laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK),or laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy(LASEK).methods:We reviewed records of patients who underwent WFO PRK retreatments using the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q 400 Hz Excimer Laser System(Alcon Surgical)between January 2008 and April 2011 at Walter Reed Army medical Center and madigan Army medical *** were recorded in terms of uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA),manifest refraction spherical equivalent(mRSE),corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA),and complications at 1 month(m),3 m,and 6 m ***:Seventy-eight patients(120 eyes)underwent WFO PRK retreatment during the study *** surgery was surface ablation in 87 eyes(78 PRK,9 LASEK)and LASIK in 33 *** mean spherical equivalent before retreatment was−0.79±0.94 D(−3.00 to 1.88 D).UDVA was≥20/20 in 69 eyes(60.0%)at 1 m,54 eyes(71.1%)at 3 m,and 27 eyes(73.0%)at 6 m *** was within±0.50 D of emmetropia in 78 eyes(67.8%)at 1 m,59 eyes(77.6%)at 3 m,and 25 eyes(67.6%)at 6 m *** was maintained within±1 line of pre-op in 113 of 115 eyes(98.3%)at 1 m,74 of 76 eyes(97.4%)at 3 m,and 37 eyes(100%)at 6 m ***:Although follow-up was limited beyond 3 m,WFO PRK retreatments in patients with residual refractive error may be a safe and effective *** studies are necessary to determine the long-term safety and stability of outcomes.

Earthworm community development in soils of a reclaimed steelworks

Long-term studies are essential to learn earthworm community development and soil formation post *** were undertaken at a former steelworks site at Hallside,near Glasgow,UK,reclaimed in the 1990s using a mixture of colliery spoil and sewage *** site was largely planted for production of short rotation coppice willow(Salix spp.).Earthworm inoculation formed a part of the restoration *** monitoring occurred in the interim,but some records of earthworm sampling existed in 2000 and *** study focused on monitoring earthworms and soil properties across the site,drawing comparisons with adjacent unspoiled *** showed that after 22 years,a species-rich community of earthworms(n=16)colonized the site,with endogeic Aporrectodea caliginosa being dominant by number and anecic *** by *** the site,earthworm community density and biomass were 208 individuals m^(-2) and 71 g m^(-2),*** Shannon diversity index for earthworms was 1.89,with an evenness of *** sewage sludge increased the soil organic matter,but the stone content of the colliery spoil prevented digging in some *** chemistry had no negative effect on earthworms,but the compacted substrate did hinder water *** colonized the reclaimed site from adjacent areas,and community structure and density below well-drained,scrub-free willow,birch,and grassland were not significantly different(P>0.05)from those of the adjacent unspoiled *** results show that the historical earthworm inoculation was unnecessary and badly *** reclamations of similar sites can learn from this investigation.

Different light wavelengths have specific effects on plant growth and ***-bandwidth light-emitting diode(LED)lighting may be used to directionally manipulate size,color and metabolites in high-value fruits and *** this report,Red Russian kale(Brassica napus)seedlings were grown under specific light conditions and analyzed for photomorphogenic responses,pigment accumulation and nutraceutical *** results showed that this genotype responds predictably to darkness,blue and red light,with suppression of hypocotyl elongation,development of pigments and changes in specific ***,these seedlings were relatively hypersensitive to far-red light,leading to uncharacteristically short hypocotyls and high pigment accumulation,even after growth under very low fluence rates(,1 mmol m^(-2) s^(-1)).General antioxidant levels and aliphatic glucosinolates are elevated by far-red light *** treatments of darkness,blue light,red light and far-red light were applied throughout sprout development to alter final product *** results indicate that sequential treatment with narrow-bandwidth light may be used to affect key economically important traits in high-value crops.

DNA-directed assembly of copper nanoblocks with inbuilt fluorescent and electrochemical properties： Application in simultaneous amplification-free analysis of multiple RNA species

The intrinsic affinity of DNA molecules toward metallic ions can drive the specific formation of copper nanostructures within the nucleic acid helix structure in a sequence-dependent manner. The resultant nanostructures have interesting fluorescent and electrochemical properties, which are attractive for novel biosensing applications. However, the potential of using DNA-templated nano- structures for precision disease diagnosis remains unexplored. Particularly, DNA- templated nanostructures show high potential for the universal amplification-free detection of different RNA biomarker species. Because of their low cellular levels and differing species-dependent length and sequence features, simultaneous detection of different messenger RNAs, microRNAs, and long non-coding RNAs species with a single technique is challenging. Here, we report a contemporary technique for facile in situ assembly of DNA-templated copper nanoblocks （CuNBs） on various RNA species targets after hybridization-based magnetic isolation. Our approach circumvents the typical limitations associated with amplification and labeling procedures of current RNA assays. The synthesized CuNBs enabled amplification-free fm-level RNA detection with flexible fluorescence or electrochemical readouts. Furthermore, our nanosensing technique displays potential for clinical application, as demonstrated by non-invasive analysis of three diagnostic RNA biomarkers from a cohort of 10 prostate cancer patient urinary samples with 100%-concordance （quantitative reverse transcription- polymerase chain reaction （PCR） validation）. The good analytical performance and versatility of our method may be useful in both diagnostics and research fields.

Carbon star CGCS 673 identified as a semi-regular variable star

This study reports that the carbon star CGCS 673 is a semi-regular(SR)variable star with a period of 135 d and an amplitude of 0.18mag in the *** light curve obtained by this study correlates well with the SR classification as the photometric data obtained show noticeable periodicity in the light changes of CGCS 673 that is occasionally interrupted by a period of irregular *** derived period and colour index obtained from our data and those from professional databases indicate that the attributes of this star fall within the parameters of the SR class of variable *** our notification of the discovery that this star is a variable source,CGCS 673 has received the AAVSO Unique Identifier of(AAVSO UID)000-BmZ-492.

WHAT DOES ACCESS TO JUSTICE REQUIRE？ -- OVERCOmING BARRIERS TO INVOKE THE UNITED NATIONS CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Persons with disabilities have a right to effective access to justice under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities （UNCRPD）. This article provides insights on the parameters of that right, including a close examination of the history and text of Article 13, which directly addresses access to justice and other relevant UNCRPD provisions. In addition to the UNCRPD, this article discusses implementation guidance from the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, including its guidelines for State Party reports and jurisprudence. The initial reports by eleven States Parties -- Argentina, Azerbaijan, China, Costa Rica, Croatia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Hungary, mexico, Peru and Turkmenistan - are also considered. The Committee＇s feedback regarding implementation of Article 13 by these eleven States parties is critiqued for being limited and inconsistent. This article then attempts to clarify what effective access to justice actually requires. It does so by focusing on the insights that can be drawn from implementation of Article 13 since the UNCRPD was adopted as well as implementation guidance from the Conference of States Parties, the International Disability Alliance, the World Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry and the National Center for Access to Justice. This article concludes with recommendations on how the Committee can improve its guidance on access to justice to help ensure that equal rights will not be illusory for persons with disabilities.

Elements of disturbance that affect epiphyte vitality in a temperate rainforest:an experimental approach

Aims Epiphytes are an abundant and diverse component of many wet temperate forests and have significant roles in ecosystem *** is known about the processes and rates of their death and decomposition when they fall from the canopy,which limits our understanding of their role in forest carbon sequestration and nutri-ent *** the temperate rainforest of the Quinault River Valley,Washington State,our aim was to test hypotheses regarding four elements of disturbance that might contribute to their *** We established set of experiments in which we placed samples of canopy epiphytes and their branch segments:(i)in the canopy versus forest floor microenvironment(stratum);(ii)attached to live versus dead branch substrates;(iii)subjected to physical disruption and‘jarring’;and(iv)in direct versus indirect con-tact with the forest *** the 2-year study,we assigned a non-destructive‘vitality index’(based on color and appar-ent mortality and dryness)to each sample every 2-3 months to compare effects of the experimental treatments and analyzed with a statistical model and post hoc pairwise comparisons of *** Findings The canopy versus ground stratum and live/dead branch status sig-nificantly affected epiphyte *** of physical disruption and ground contact were not *** were seasonal effects(low vitality during the sampling times in the summer,revitalization upon sampling times in the winter)for all treatments except samples in contact with the *** implication of these results relates to effects of climate change,which is predicted to shift to hotter,drier summers and wetter *** change may affect forest dynamics and nutrient cycling in unpredictable *** also point to future experiments to understand biotic and abiotic effects on epiphyte disturbance and dynamics.

Aqueous ruthenium detection by microwave-assisted laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Aqueous ruthenium was detected in real-time under ambient conditions using microwaveassisted laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(mW-LIBS).A 10 mJ laser energy and 750 W microwave power were directed at an open liquid jet sample of *** was observed that,for liquid flow,the coupling efficiency between the microwave and the laser-induced plasma was limited to 43%.The improvement in the ruthenium’s signal-to-noise ratio with mW-LIBS,with respect to LIBS,was *** on mW-LIBS,the limit of detection for aqueous ruthenium was determined to be 957±84 ppb.
