Currently,chemicals and waste are recognized as key drivers of habitat degradation and biodiversity loss in aquatic *** ensure vibrant habitats for aquatic species and maintain a sustainable aquatic food supply system,Japan promulgated its Environmental Quality Standards for the Conservation of Aquatic Life(EQS-CAL),based on its own aquatic life water quality criteria(ALWQC)derivation method and application *** we overview Japan's EQS-CAL framework and highlight their best practices by examining the framework systems and related *** experiences from Japan's EQS-CAL system include:(1)Classifying six types of aquatic organisms according to their adaptability to habitat status;(2)Using a risk-based chemical screening system for three groups of chemical pollutants;(3)Recommending a five-step method for determining ALWQC values based on the most sensitive life stage of the most sensitive species;(4)Applying site-specific implementation mechanisms through a series of Plan-Do-Check-Act *** paper offers scientific references for other jurisdictions,aiding in the development of more resilient ALWQC systems that can maintain healthy environments for aquatic life and potentially mitigate ongoing threats to human societies and global aquatic biodiversity.

Asymptotic false discovery control of the Benjamini-Hochberg procedure for pairwise comparisons

In a one-way analysis-of-variance(ANOVA) model,the number of pairwise comparisons can become large even with a moderate number of *** by this,we consider a regime with a growing number of groups and prove that,when testing pairwise comparisons,the Benjamini-Hochberg(BH) procedure can asymptotically control false discoveries,despite the fact that the involved t-statistics do not exhibit the wellknown positive dependence structure required for exact false discovery rate(FDR) *** Tukey's perspective that the difference between the means of any two groups cannot be exactly zero,our main result provides control over the directional false discovery rate and directional false discovery proportion.A key technical contribution of our work is demonstrating that the dependence among the t-statistics is sufficiently weak to establish the convergence result typically required for asymptotic FDR *** analysis does not rely on conventional assumptions such as normality,variance homogeneity,or a balanced design,thereby offering a theoretical foundation for applications in more general settings.

Development of the telencephalon relies upon several signaling centers-localized cellular populations that supply secreted factors to pattern the cortical *** such signaling center is the cortical hem,which arises during embryonic development at the telencephalic dorsal midline,adjacent to the choroid plexus and hippocampal primordium(Figure 1A).While the cortical hem has also been described in reptiles and birds,most of our knowledge about the developmental roles of the cortical hem is derived from the analysis in *** cortical hem produces several types of secreted molecules,including wingless-related integration site(Wnt)and bone morphogenetic(Bmp)*** cortical hem is particularly important for the development of the hippocampus,which is involved in learning and memory,and the neocortex,which is the most complex brain region that mediates multiple types of behavior and higher cognitive functions(mangale et al.,2008;Dal-Valle-Anton and Borrell,2022).

Polyethylene glycol fusion repair of severed sciatic nerves accelerates recovery of nociceptive sensory perceptions in male and female rats of different strains

Study on the wind field and pollutant dispersion in street canyons using a stable numerical method

A stable finite element method for the time dependent Navier-Stokes equations was used for studying the wind flow and pollutant dispersion within street canyons. A three-step fractional method was used to solve the velocity field and the pressure field separately from the governing equations. The Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin(SUPG) method was used to get stable numerical results. Numerical oscillation was minimized and satisfactory results can be obtained for flows at high Reynolds numbers. Simulating the flow over a square cylinder within a wide range of Reynolds numbers validates the wind field model. The Strouhal numbers obtained from the numerical simulation had a good agreement with those obtained from experiment. The wind field model developed in the present study is applied to simulate more complex flow phenomena in street canyons with two different building configurations. The results indicated that the flow at rooftop of buildings might not be assumed parallel to the ground as some numerical modelers did. A counter-clockwise rotating vortex may be found in street canyons with an inflow from the left to right. In addition, increasing building height can increase velocity fluctuations in the street canyon under certain circumstances, which facilitate pollutant dispersion. At high Reynolds numbers, the flow regimes in street canyons do not change with inflow velocity.

Luminescent cyclometalated iridium(Ⅲ) dipyridoquinoxaline indole complexes as biological probes

Four luminescent cyclometalated iridium(Ⅲ) dipyridoquinoxaline complexes appended with an indole moiety [Ir(N^C)2(N^N)] (PF6) (HN^C = 2-phenylpyridine, Hppy; N^N = 2-(N-(2-(indole-3-acetamido)ethyl)aminocarbonyl)dipyrido[3,2-f:2′,3′-h]quinox- aline, dpqC2indole (1a), N^N = 2-(N-(6-(indole-3-acetamido)hexyl)aminocarbonyl)dipyrido[3,2-f:2′,3′-h]quinoxaline, dpqC6indole (1b); HN^C = 7,8-benzoquinoline, Hbzq, N^N = dpqC2indole (2a), N^N = dpqC6indole (2b)) have been synthesized and characterized. Upon irradiation, all the complexes displayed moderately intense and long-lived luminescence under ambient condi-tions and in 77 K glass. On the basis of the photophysical data, the emission of the complexes has been assigned to an excited state of triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (3mLCT) ((dπ(Ir)→π*(N^N)) character. Cyclic voltammetric studies revealed indole-based and iridium-based oxidations at ca. +1.10 V and +1.24 V vs. SCE, respectively, and ligand-based reductions at ca. -1.07 to-2.29 V vs. SCE. The interactions of the complexes with an indole-binding protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA), have been examined by emission titrations.

Effects of building aspect ratio,diurnal heating scenario,and wind speed on reactive pollutant dispersion in urban street canyons

A photochemistry coupled computational fluid dynamics （CFD） based numerical model has been developed to model the reactive pollutant dispersion within urban street canyons, particularly integrating the interrelationship among diurnal heating scenario （solar radiation affections in nighttime, daytime, and sun-rise/set）, wind speed, building aspect ratio （building-height-to-street-width）, and dispersion of reactive gases, specifically nitric oxide （NO）, nitrogen dioxide （NO2） and ozone （O3） such that a higher standard of air quality in metropolitan cities can be achieved. Validation has been done with both experimental and numerical results on flow and temperature fields in a street canyon with bottom heating, which justifies the accuracy of the current model. The model was applied to idealized street canyons of different aspect ratios from 0.5 to 8 with two different ambient wind speeds under different diurnal heating scenarios to estimate the influences of different aforementioned parameters on the chemical evolution of NO, NO2 and 03. Detailed analyses of vertical profiles of pollutant concentrations showed that different diurnal heating scenarios could substantially affect the reactive gases exchange between the street canyon and air aloft, followed by respective dispersion and reaction. Higher building aspect ratio and stronger ambient wind speed were revealed to be, in general, responsible for enhanced entrainment of 03 concentrations into the street canyons along windward walls under all diurnal heating scenarios. Comparatively, particular attention can be paid on the windward wall heating and nighttime uniform surface heating scenarios.

Dynamic stiffness for thin-walled structures by power series

The dynamic stiffness method is introduced to analyze thin-walled structures including thin-walled straight beams and spatial twisted helix beam. A dynamic stiffness matrix is formed by using frequency dependent shape functions which are exact solutions of the governing differential equations. With the obtained thin-walled beam dynamic stiffness matrices, the thin-walled frame dynamic stiffness matrix can also be formulated by satisfying the required displacements compatibility and forces equilib-rium, a method which is similar to the finite element method (FEm). Then the thin-walled structure natural frequencies can be found by equating the determinant of the system dynamic stiffness matrix to zero. By this way, just one element and several elements can exactly predict many modes of a thin-walled beam and a spatial thin-walled frame, respectively. Several cases are studied and the results are compared with the existing solutions of other methods. The natural frequencies and buckling loads of these thin-walled structures are computed.
