Two-dimensional Variational Analysis of Near-Surface Moisture from Simulated Radar Refractivity-Related Phase Change Observations

Because they are most sensitive to atmospheric moisture content, radar refractivity observations can provide high-resolution information about the highly variable low-level moisture field. In this study, simulated radar refractivity-related phase-change data were created using a radar simulator from realistic highresolution model simulation data for a dryline case. These data were analyzed using the 2dVAR system developed specifically for the phase-change data. Two sets of experiments with the simulated observations were performed, one assuming a uniform target spacing of 250 m and one assuming nonuniform spacing between 250 m to 4 km. Several sources of observation error were considered, and their impacts were examined. They included errors due to ground target position uncertainty, typical random errors associated with radar measurements, and gross error due to phase wrapping. Without any additional information, the 2dVAR system was incapable of dealing with phase-wrapped data directly. When there was no phase wrapping in the data, the 2dVAR produced ex- cellent analyses, even in the presence of both position uncertainty and random radar measurement errors. When a separate pre-processing step was applied to unwrap the phase-wrapped data, quality moisture anal- yses were again obtained, although the analyses were smoother due to the reduced effective resolution of the observations by interpolation and smoothing involved in the unwrapping procedure. The unwrapping procedure was effective even when significant differences existed between the analyzed state and the state at a reference time. The results affirm the promise of using radar refractivity phase-change measurements for near-surface moisture analysis.

The use of high-power lights during night-time purse seining is common in ***,metal halide(MH)lamps are used in the commercial fishery to attract fish,however these lights require more energy,have a shorter lifespan,and lower chromatic performance than light emitting diode(LEd)*** study examined catch efficiency and fuel consumption when using LEd lamps in combination with reduced numbers of MH lamps(10.24 kW),compared to conventional lighting(28.6 kW),used during purse seining off the coast of Ninh Thuan province,*** economic performance associated with using LEd lamps in this fishery was also *** found no significant differences in catch rates between the different light treatments,however fuel consumption was significantly *** consumption per nightly trip using LEd with MH lamps was 70.8 l(11.1 l/h)compared to114 l(17.45 l/hr)using MH lamps alone,an estimated 37.9%reduction in fuel *** investment in LEd lamps by a fishing enterprise will require additional initial costs,however our analysis revealed the financial break-event point can be reached after approximately 101 nightly trips when the fuel price is at the 2015 level of USd$0.74 per *** enterprises can increase their profitability,and reduce CO2 emissions,by using LEd lamps in the Vietnamese purse seine fishery.

Projection on precipitation frequency of different intensities and precipitation amount in the Lancang-Mekong River basin in the 21st century

In the Lancang‒Mekong River basin(LMRB),agriculture,dominating the local economy,faces increasing challenges in water supply under climate *** projection of future precipitation in this basin is essential for understanding the *** this study,the Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF)model was applied to project the LMRB *** with the historical period(1986e2005),we analyzed the changes of both the projected precipitation amount and the frequency of rainless(d1),light rain(0.1e10 mm d1),moderate rain(10e25 mm d1),heavy rain(25e50 mm d1),rainstorm(50e100 mm d1),and heavy rainstorm(>100 mm d1)for three periods,namely the near-term(2016e2035),mid-term(2046e2065),and long-term(2080e2099).The results indicate that the precipitation amount during the wet season(AprileOctober)is expected to increase in most areas of the basin for the three *** for the precipitation during the dry season(NovembereMarch),an increase is projected in most areas for the near-term,while an increase in the lower reach of the basin and a decrease in the upper and middle reach for the mid-term and *** precipitation reduction is expected to be greatest in Myanmar,Laos,Thailand,and Yunnan province of China for the *** frequency of precipitation in different intensities has prominent regional and temporal *** the wet season,the days of rainless and light rain are expected to decrease in the middle reach,whereas the days of rainstorm and heavy rainstorm *** feature is especially strong in southern Thailand,southern Laos and Cambodia in the near-term and in Laos and Thailand for the mid-term and *** the dry season,there are projected increasing rainless days and decreasing days of precipitation for the other intensities in the middle reach,and opposite in the rest area of the *** projected precipitation changes have potential various impact in different parts of the *** middle re

Thrust Analysis of a Fish Robot Actuated by Piezoceramic Composite Actuators

In this work, a three-dimensional （3d） Computational Fluid dynamics （CFd） model was built to simulate the tail fin motion of a fish robot actuated by a piezoceramic composite actuator, and to determine the maximum thrust tail-beat frequency. A simulation of the tail fin at a tail-beat frequency was performed to confirm measured thrust data from a previous study. The computed and measured thrusts were in good agreement. A series of thrust simulations were conducted for various tail-beat frequencies to confirm the maximum thrust frequency that was obtained from thrust measurements in the previous study. The largest thrust was calculated at a tail-beat frequency of 3.7 Hz and vortices around the tail were fully separated. The calculated maximum thrust tail-beat frequency was in good agreement with the measured frequency. Flow characteristics during tail fin motion were examined to explain why the largest thrust occurred at this particular tail-beat frequency.

Effectiveness of bee venom acupuncture for patients suffering from periarthritis humeroscapularis

Low-loss wide-bandwidth planar transmission line with a laminated conductor

In this paper, the laminated conductor technology is first introduced to planar-integrated transmission lines. The laminated conductor is composed of multilayers of metal and insulator, which has a lower conductor loss than a solid conductor. Based on the silicon-based micro electromechanical system technology,a laminated coplanar waveguide(CPW) with wide bandwidth and low loss is proposed, which uses a laminated conductor for signal lines and grounds. A laminated CPW and its transition are designed, fabricated,and measured. The simulation results show that the laminated CPW with many insulator layers has a low conductor loss. The measurement results illustrate that the average insertion loss of the laminated CPW is0.65 d B from dC to 40 GHz, which is 44.4% smaller than that of the solid CPW.

Investigation of Generalized SIFs of cracks in 3d piezoelectric media under various crack-face conditions

This paper investigates the influence of crack geometry,crack-face and loading conditions,and the permittivity of a medium inside the crack gap on intensity factors of planar and non-planar cracks in linear piezoelectric media.A weakly singular boundary integral equation method together with the near-front approximation is adopted to accurately determine the intensity *** results indicate that the non-flat crack surface,the electric field,and the permittivity of a medium inside the crack gap play a crucial role on the behavior of intensity *** mode-I stress intensity factors(K1)for two representative non-planar cracks under different crack-face conditions are found significantly different and they possess both upper and lower *** addition,K1 for impermeable and semi-permeable non-planar cracks treated depends strongly on the electric field whereas those of impermeable,permeable,and semi-permeable penny-shaped cracks are identical and independent of the electric *** stress/electric intensity factors predicted by permeable and energetically consistent models are,respectively,independent of and dependent on the electric field for the penny-shaped crack and the two representative non-planar ***,the permittivity of a medium inside the crack gap strongly affects the intensity factors for all crack configurations considered except for K1 of the semi-permeable pennyshaped crack.
