BACKGROUnD non-responsive celiac disease(nRCD) is defined as the persistence of symptoms in individuals with celiac disease(CeD) despite being on a gluten-free diet(GFD). There is scant literature about nRCD in the pediatric *** To determ.ne the incidence, clinical characteristics and underlying causes of nRCD in *** Retrospective cohort study performed at Boston Children’s Hospital(BCH). Children nosed with CeD by positive serology and duodenal biopsies compatible with marsh Ⅲ histology between 2008 and 2012 were identified in the BCH’s Celiac Disease Program database. medical records were longitudinally reviewed from the time of diagnosis through September 2015. nRCD was defined as persistent symptoms at 6 mo after the initiation of a GFD and causes of nRCD as well as symptom evolution were detailed. The children without symptoms at 6 mo(responders) were compared with the nRCD group. Additionally, presenting signs and symptoms at the time of diagnosis of CeD am.ng the responders and nRCD patients were collected and compared to identify any potential predictors for nRCD at 6 mo of GFD *** Six hundred and sixteen children were included. ninety-one(15%) met criteria for nRCD. most were female(77%). Abdom.nal pain [odds ratio(OR) 1.8 95% confidence interval(CI) 1.1-2.9], constipation(OR 3.1 95%CI 1.9-4.9) and absence of abdom.nal distension(OR for abdom.nal distension 0.4 95%CI 0.1-0.98) at diagnosis were associated with nRCD. nRCD was attributed to a wide variety of diagnoses with gluten exposure(30%) and constipation(20%) being the most comm.n causes. Other causes for nRCD included lactose intolerance(9%), gastroesophageal reflux(8%), functional abdom.nal pain(7%), irritable bowel syndrome(3%), depression/anxiety(3%), eosinophilic esophagitis(2%), food allergy(1%), eating disorder(1%), gastric ulcer with Helicobacter pylori(1%), lymphocytic colitis(1%), aerophagia(1%) and undeterm.ned(13%). 64% of children with nRCD

A familiar stranger:CD34 expression and putative functions in SVF cells of adipose tissue

Hum.n adipose tissue obtained by liposuction is easily accessible and an abundant potential source of autologous cells for regenerative medicine applications. After digestion of the tissue and removal of differentiated adipocytes, the so-called stromal vascular fraction (SVF) of adipose, a mix of various cell types, is obtained. SVF contains mesenchymal fibroblastic cells, able to adhere to culture plastic and to generate large colonies in vitro , that closely resemble bone marrow-derived colony form.ng units-fibroblastic, and whose expanded progeny, adipose mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (ASC), show strong similarities with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. The sialomucin CD34, which is well known as a hematopoietic stem cell marker, is also expressed by ASC in native adipose tissue but its expression is gradually lost upon standard ASC expansion in vitro . Surprisingly little is known about the functional role of CD34 in the biology and tissue form.ng capacity of SVF cells and ASC. The present editorial provides a short introduction to the CD34 family of sialomucins and reviews the data from the literature concerning ex- pression and function of these proteins in SVF cells and their in vitro expanded progeny.

Stretching in the prevention of hamstring strains: Attitudes, beliefs and current practices am.ng football coaches in mauritius

Context and Objective: Hamstring strain is a comm.n injury in football and it causes a significant amount of time lost from competition and training. Since poor flexibility is thought to predispose to muscle strain, stretching is routinely recomm.nded during warm-up routines by coaches to prevent injuries. However, available evidence suggests that pre-exercise stretching (PES), especially static stretching, has no benefit on injury rates and may even reduce perform.nce in explosive type activities. We designed this study to assess the attitudes, beliefs and practices of football coaches regarding stretching in the prevention of hamstring strains. Design: A cross-sectional survey. Setting: mauritius Football Association (mFA). Participants: 26 football coaches registered with the mFA. Intervention: Questionnaires were distributed to football coaches of the mFA via sports officers. Questionnaires were then collected two weeks after distribution. main Outcome measures: Attitudes, beliefs and practices of football coaches regarding stretching in the prevention of ham-string strains. Results: mFA coaches held generally positive attitudes and beliefs towards stretching. 88% of coaches felt that PES is beneficial and 93% believed that PES prevents hamstring strains. The majority of coaches recomm.nded stretching after warm.ng up (81%) and after the training session (93%). 76% of coaches also advised stretching outside the training sessions. 96% of coaches used static stretching to stretch the hamstrings. The hamstrings were stretched on average for 4 times at each training session and the mean duration of a static stretch was 12 seconds. Conclusions: nearly all coaches believed that PES prevents hamstring strains although evidence is limited. Some of the coaches’ beliefs and practices were not in line with current recomm.ndations. Coaches reported that their stretching practices would be most likely influenced by scientific research. Thus there is an urgent need to devise

The genus m.ntha encompasses m.nt species cultivated for their essential oils, which are formulated into a vast array of consumer products. Desirable oil characteristics and resistance to the fungal disease Verti- cillium wilt are top priorities for the m.nt industry. However, cultivated m.nts have complex polyploid ge- homes and are sterile. Breeding efforts, therefore, require the developm.nt of genomic resources for fertile m.nt species. Here, we present draft de novo genome and plastome assemblies for a wilt-resistant South African accession of m.ntha Iongifolia （L.） Huds., a diploid species ancestral to cultivated pepperm.nt and spearm.nt. The 353 mb genome contains 35 597 predicted protein-coding genes, including 292 disease resistance gene homologs, and nine genes determ.ning essential oil characteristics. A genetic linkage map ordered 1397 genome scaffolds on 12 pseudochromosomes. more than two million simple sequence repeats were identified, which will facilitate molecular marker developm.nt. The m. Iongifolia genome is a valuable resource for both metabolic engineering and molecular breeding. This is exemplified by employing the genome sequence to clone and functionally characterize the promoters in a pepperm.nt cultivar, and dem.nstrating the utility of a glandular trichome-specific promoter to increase expression of a biosynthetic gene, thereby modulating essential oil composition.
