Systemic therapy without radiation may be appropriate as neoadjuvant therapy for localized pancreas cancer

Background:The utility of neoadjuvant treatment for resectable pancreas cancer is yet to be determined,but has commonly included *** evaluated outcomes in patients with radiographically resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy without ***:A retrospective review of patients in our institutional pancreatic cancer registry was performed,which identified 36 patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy alone for resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma between 2012 and ***:median age at diagnosis was 66.3 *** regimens included gemcitabine(n=17),gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel(n=8),or 5-FU/leucovorin/irinotecan/oxaliplatin(FOLFIRINOX)(n=11).Surgical resection was performed in 69%of patients(n=25),with an R0 resection rate of 92%(n=23 patients).During chemotherapy,distant disease became apparent in 19%of patients(n=7),while no patients had evidence of local *** rates were similar between chemotherapy regimens(single agent=59%,multiple agent=79%).median overall survival for all patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy was 30.3 and 34.4 months for those who underwent surgical *** was no difference in median survival for patients treated with gemcitabine(31.3 months)or multi-agent chemotherapy(29.7 months).Conclusions:A short course of neoadjuvant chemotherapy without chemoradiation may improve patient selection prior to surgical resection for pancreas ***,local disease progression did not limit surgical resection in this small series.

Effects of prior freezing or drying on the swelling behaviour of the bovine cornea

Background Frozen or dried corneal grafts are commonly used for stromal transplantation such as lamellar keratoplasty （full or partial thickness）, keratophakia, epikeratophakia. Structural properties are important for the final optical results of these surgeries but the effects of freezing/thawing and drying/rehydration on the properties of the stroma are known little compared with the corneal endothelium, mainly because of lack of non-invasive technique to evaluate the stromal structure. This study aimed to investigate the swelling and structural properties of the bovine corneal stroma following freezing or drying by X-ray diffraction which was a non-invasive technique and could give ultra-structural information in hydrated tissues. methods Bovine corneas were either frozen at -40~C or dried to constant weight in a dessicator over silica gel. Swelling was carried out by placing the corneas into dialysis tubing and equilibrating them against various concentrations of polyethylene glycol （PEG） to obtain a range of tissue hydrations. This method minimises the loss of soluble tissue components during the swelling process. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction was used to measure the average intermolecular spacing, the interfibrillar spacing and the fibril diameter as a function of hydration. Changes in light scattering were detected using a microdensitometer. Results Freezing and thawing of the cornea caused an increase in light scattering by 63.9% at tissue hydration （H）=3.4, and by 50.0% at H=4.9. Repeated freezing and thawing causes further increased by 38.9% at the second time and another 36.0% at the third time （P 〈0.05）. There was a tendency for both the frozen and the dried comeas to lose some swelling ability, achieving hydrations respectively of 10% and 18% below those of fresh corneas at 0 PEG. management of forest lands considering multi-functional approaches is the basis to sustain or enhance the provi-sion of specific benefits,while minimizing negative impacts to the *** a desired management itinerary to a forest depends on a variety of factors,including the forest type,its ecological characteristics,and the social and economic needs of local communities.A strategic assessment of the forest use suitability(FUS)(namely productive,protective,conservation-oriented,social and multi-functional)at regional level,based on the provision of forest ecosystem services and trade-offs between FUS alternatives,can be used to develop management strategies that are tailored to the specific needs and conditions of the *** present study assesses the provision of multiple forest ecosystem services and employs a decision model to identify the FUS that sup-ports the most present and productive ecosystem services in each stand in *** this purpose,we apply the latest version of the Ecosystem management Decision Support(EmDS)system,a spatially oriented decision support system that provides accurate results for multi-criteria *** evaluate 32 metrics and 12 as-sociated ecosystem services indicators to represent the spatial reality of the *** to the results,the dominant primary use suitability is social,followed by protective and ***,final assignment of uses is not straightforward and requires an exhaustive analysis of trade-offs between all alternative options,in many cases identifying flexible outcomes,and increasing the representativeness of multi-functional *** assignment of forest use suitability aims to significantly improve the definition of the most adequate management strategy to be applied.

作为一种神经肽,催产素对于个体社会认知和情绪加工有着非常重要的调节作用,其中就包括对在人们工作和生活中扮演着关键角色的学习和记忆活动的影响。采用不同模态技术的动物和人类研究一致表明了外源性催产素对于学习和记忆具有重要的调节作用,这一作用可能是外源性催产素通过与多巴胺奖赏通路、边缘系统等学习和记忆关键脑网络中广泛分布的催产素受体相结合,进而调整其功能状态实现的;但与此同时,催产素对学习和记忆的促进或抑制作用会因实验范式、刺激材料、给药时间、位置和剂量等因素的不同而存在差异。未来需要协同动物和人类研究的各自优势,采用规范化的实验任务设置和给药程序克服当前该领域的研究局限,并积极发掘催产素在干预相关精神疾病患者学习和记忆加工缺陷中的应用潜力。

Engineered polycaprolactone–magnesium hybrid biodegradable porous scaffold for bone tissue engineering

In this paper, we describe the fabrication of a new biodegradable porous scaffold composed of polycaprolactone(PCL) and magnesium(mg)micro-particles. The compressive modulus of PCL porous scaffold was increased to at least 150% by incorporating 29% mg particles with the porosity of 74% using micro-CT analysis. Surprisingly, the compressive modulus of this scaffold was further increased to at least 236% when the silane-coupled mg particles were added. In terms of cell viability, the scaffold modified with mg particles significantly convinced the attachment and growth of osteoblasts as compared with the pure PCL scaffold. In addition, the hybrid scaffold was able to attract the formation of apatite layer over its surface after 7 days of immersion in normal culture medium, whereas it was not observed on the pure PCL scaffold. This in vitro result indicated the enhanced bioactivity of the modified scaffold. moreover, enhanced bone forming ability was also observed in the rat model after 3 months of implantation. Though bony in-growth was found in all the implanted scaffolds. High volume of new bone formation could be found in the mg/PCL hybrid scaffolds when compared to the pure PCL scaffold. Both pure PCL and mg/PCL hybrid scaffolds were degraded after 3 months. However, no tissue inflammation was observed. In conclusion, these promising results suggested that the incorporation of mg micro-particles into PCL porous scaffold could significantly enhance its mechanical and biological properties. This modified porous bio-scaffold may potentially apply in the surgical management of large bone defect fixation.

Cr(III)ehydrolyzed polyacrylamide(HPAm)gels have been extensively studied as a promising strategy controlling waste water production for mature ***,the gelation time of the current technologies is not long enough for in-depth *** this study,we report a novel synthesis method to obtain chromium chloride/poly(methyl methacrylate)(PmmA)nanocapsules which can significantly delay the gelation of HPAm through encapsulating the chromium chloride *** chromium chloride-loaded nanocapsules(CreNC)are prepared via a facile inverse miniemulsion evaporation method during which the hydrophobic PmmA polymers,pre-dispersed in an organic solvent,were carefully controlled to precipitate onto stable aqueous miniemulsion *** stable aqueous nanodroplets(W)containing Cr(III)are dispersed in a mixture of organic solvent(O1)with PmmA and nonsolvent medium(O2)to prepare an inverse *** the evaporation of the O1,PmmA forms CreNCs around the aqueous *** CreNCs are readily transferred into water from the organic nonsolvent *** CreNCs exhibit the tunable size(358-983 nm),Cr loading(7.1%-19.1%),and Cr entrapment efficiency(11.7%-80.2%),with tunable zeta potentials in different PVA *** CreNCs can delay release of Cr(III)and prolong the gelation time of HPAm up to 27 days.

Since 2009 initiatives that were selected for the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures started working to build research infrastructures for a wide range of research *** important result of the strategic discussions was that distributed infrastructure scenarios were now seen as“complex research facilities”in addition to,for example traditional centralised infrastructures such as *** this paper we look at five typical examples of such distributed infrastructures where many researchers working in different centres are contributing data,tools/services and knowledge and where the major task of the research infrastructure initiative is to create a virtually integrated suite of resources allowing researchers to carry out state-of-the-art *** analysis shows that most of these research infrastructures worked on the Findability,Accessibility,Interoperability and Reusability dimensions before the term“FAIR”was actually *** definition of the FAIR principles and their wide acceptance can be seen as a confirmation of what these initiatives were doing and it gives new impulse to close still existing *** initiatives also seem to be ready to take up the next steps which will emerge from the definition of FAIR maturity *** from these infrastructures should bring in their 10-years’experience in this definition process.
