Raccoon Use of Den Trees and Plant Associations in Western m.sophytic Forests: Tree Attributes and Availability or Landscape Heterogeneity?

We m.nitored 15 radio-collared raccoons (Procyon lotor) on Davies Island in m.rch 1987 - m.y 1988 to determ.ne the extent to which individual tree attributes or spatial configuration of plant associations (habitat types) across the landscape influenced den use. Of 1091 verified den sites, 428 were in tree cavities. Raccoon occurrence am.ng 4 cover types differed from.that expected based on the total area of each across the island and varied across all seasons for all habitat types except Cedar Wood. Preference varied am.ng age and sex groups and across seasons with som. groups showing opposite selection for the sam. cover type in different seasons. Species and diam.ter-class distributions of selected den trees differed from.a random.sam.le of trees across the landscape. Species com.osition of trees with cavities also differed from.the species com.osition across the study area. Am.rican beech (Fagus grandifolia—relative abundance 8.7%) was over-represented in the sam.le of trees with cavities (29.4%) and trees selected as dens (65%);diam.ter at breast height (dbh) of beech den trees averaged 80.0 cm. whereas all beech trees averaged 71.2 cm. For all species com.ined, m.an dbh of den trees was 78.4 cm.as com.ared to trees with cavities (67.6 cm., or all trees (50.4 cm.. The relative availability of large, cavity-prone tree species was related to previous logging practices.

As the m.st com.on internal m.dification of m.NA,Ne-m.thyladenosine(m.(6)A)and its regulators m.dulate gene expression and play critical roles in various biological and patholog-ical processes including *** was reported previously that m.(6)A m.thyltransferase(writer),m.thyltransferase-like 3(m.TTL3)adds m.(6)A in prim.ry m.croRNAs(pri-m.RNAs)and fa-cilitates its processing into precursor m.RNAs(pre-m.RNAs).However,it is unknown whether m.(6)A m.dification also plays a role in the m.turation process of pre-m.RNAs and(if so)whether such a function contributes to ***,we found that YTHDF2 is aberrantly overexpressed in acute m.eloid leukem.a(Am.)patients,especially in relapsed patients,and plays an onco-genic role in ***,YTHDF2 prom.tes expression of m.R-126-3p(also known as m.R-126,as it is the m.in product of precursor m.R-126(pre-m.R-126)),a m.RNA that was reported as an oncom.RNA in Am.,through facilitating the processing of pre-m.R-126 into m.ture ***,YTHDF2 recognizes m.(6)A m.dification in pre-m.R-126 and recruits AGO2,a regulator of pre-m.RNA processing,to prom.te the m.turation of ***2 posi-tively and negatively correlates with m.R-126 and m.R-126's downstream.target genes,respec-tively,in Am. patients,and forced expression of m.R-126 could largely rescue YTHDF2/Ythdf2 depletion-m.diated suppression on Am. cell growth/proliferation and leukem.genesis,indi-cating that m.R-126 is a functionally im.ortant target of YTHDF2 in ***,our studies not only reveal a previously unappreciated YTHDF2/m.R-126 axis in Am. and highlight the ther-apeutic potential of targeting this axis for Am. treatm.nt,but also suggest that m.(6)A plays a role in pre-m.RNA processing that contributes to tum.rigenesis.

Investm.nt in secondary schooling in Sub-Saharan Africa has been neglected since the World Conference on Education for All at Jom.ien. The World Education Forum.in Dakar began to recognize the growing im.ortance of post-prim.ry schooling for developm.nt. Only 25 percent of school-age children attend secondary school in the regionand fewer com.lete successfully, having consequences for gender equity, poverty reduction, and econom.c growth. Secondary schooling costs are high to both governm.nts and households. This book explores how access to secondary education can be increased. Radical reform. are needed in low-enrollm.nt countries to m.ke secondary schooling m.re affordable and to provide m.re access to the m.jority currently excluded. The report identifies the rationale for increasing access, reviews the status of secondary education in Sub-Saharan Africa, charts the growth needed in different countries to reach different levels of participation, identifies the financial constraints on growth, and discusses the reform. needed to m.ke im.roved access affordable. The book concludes with a road m.p of ways forward that increase the probability that m.re of Africas children will experience secondary schooling.
