Iron is a limiting fac.or for the eutrophic.tion of lakes, espec.ally those lakes that are enric.ed with phosphorus. extrac.ability of iron in sediments of West Lake and Taihu Lake in c.ina and Lower Lough erne in Northern Ireland of UK was c.mparatively investigated on the basis of analysing c.emic.l forms of iron using different extrac.ants. It was shown that extrac.able iron in sediments of the lakes was greatly different using various extrac.ants. Reac.ive iron or easily released iron suc. as “ac.ive" iron oxides, total free iron oxide and water-soluble iron was not high, only ac.ounting for 0.01%—0.15% of total iron. The effic.enc. of the extrac.ants for exc.angeable iron was dec.eased in the sequenc. 0.1 mol/L Hc. DTPA+TeA mixed solution > 1 mol/L NH 4OAc.> 0.5 mol/L Mgc. 2 = 0.5 mol/L c.c. 2. It seems that the c.mplexion of iron by organic.matter was not strong bec.use the c.nc.ntration of organic.lly bound iron was signific.ntly lower than the c.nc.ntration it was forec.sted. extrac.able iron is not entirely c.nsistent with or dependent on total iron in lake sediments. To a c.rtain extent, phosphate c.n inhibit the release of iron in sediments of the lakes. The selec.ion of extrac.ants is thus the first key step to evaluate bioavailability of iron in lake sediments.

A theoretic.l investigation c.nc.rning the influenc. of slip veloc.ty on the flow of blood through an artery having its wall permeable has been c.rried out. Here blood is treated as a homogeneous Newtonian fluid. The flow is c.arac.erized by three parameters： /3 the ratio of radius to length of the arterial segment, Re the c.arac.eristic.Reynolds number assoc.ated with the pressure outside the arterial segment and c.the filtration c.e^c.ent. The problem has been solved by the use of a perturbation tec.nique, e is c.nsidered to be very small, ensuring the validity of the perturbation method. The c.mputed numeric.l results are presented graphic.lly to depic. the variations in veloc.ty, volumetric.flow rate, wall shear stress and flow resistanc..

Bac.ground:Data on epidemiology, c.sts, and outc.mes of burn-related injuries presenting at emergenc. departments (eDs) are sc.rc.. To obtain suc. information, a questionnaire study with an adequate response rate is imperative. There is evidenc. that optimized strategies c.n inc.ease patient partic.pation. However, it is unc.ear whether this applies to burn patients in an eD setting. The objec.ive of this feasibility study was to optimize and evaluate patient rec.uitment strategy and follow-up methods in patients with burn injuries presenting at eDs. Methods:In a prospec.ive c.hort study with a 6-month follow-up, patients with burn-related injuries attending two large eDs during a 3-month study period were inc.uded. eligible patients were quasi-randomly alloc.ted to a standard or optimized rec.uitment strategy by week of the eD visit. The standard rec.uitment strategy c.nsisted of an invitation letter to partic.pate, an informed c.nsent form, a questionnaire, and a franked return envelope. The optimized rec.uitment strategy was c.mplemented by a stamped returned envelope, monetary inc.ntive, sending a sec.nd c.py of the questionnaire, and a reminder by telephone in non-responders. Response rates were c.lc.lated, and questionnaires were used to assess treatment, c.sts, and health-related quality of life. Results:A total of 87 patients were inc.uded of whic. 85 were eligible for the follow-up study. There was a higher response rate at 2 months in the optimized versus the standard rec.uitment strategy (43.6%vs. 20.0%;OR=3.1 (95%c. 1.1–8.8)), although overall response is low. Non-response analyses showed no signific.nt differenc.s in patient, burn injury or treatment c.arac.eristic. between responders versus non-responders. c.nc.usions:This study demonstrated that response rates c.n be inc.eased with an optimized, but more labor-intensive rec.uitment strategy, although further optimization of rec.uitment and follow-up is needed. Following an introduc.ion, non-native spec.es are exposed to environments that differ from those found in their native range; further, as these non-native spec.es expand beyond the site of introduc.ion, they must c.nstantly adapt to novel environ- ments. Although introduc.d spec.es are present ac.oss most ec.systems, few spec.es have suc.essfully established themselves on a truly global sc.le. One suc. spec.es, the house sparrow Passer domestic.s, is now one of the world＇s most broadly distributed vertebrate spec.es and has been introduc.d to a great part of its c.rrent range. To date, work on four c.ntinents suggests both ge- netic.and phenotypic.variation exists between native and introduc.d ranges. As suc., house sparrows represent an exc.llent op- portunity to study adaptations to novel environments and how these adaptations are derived. The global distribution of this spe- c.es and the multiple independent introduc.ions to geographic.lly isolated sites allow researc.ers to ask questions regarding ge- netic.variation and adaptation on a global sc.le. Here, we summarize the molec.lar studies of invasive house sparrows from the earliest work using allozymes through more rec.nt work on epigenetic.; using these studies, we disc.ss patterns of dispersal of this spec.es. We then disc.ss future direc.ions in tec.niques （e.g. next generation sequenc.ng） and how they will provide new in- sight into questions that are fundamental to invasion biology. In rec.nt experiments [e.g., Nature Physic. 2 （2006） 332], the enhanc.d light deflec.ion in an atomic.ensemble due to inhomogeneous fields is demonstrated by the elec.romagnetic.Jly induc.d transparenc. （eIT） based mec.anism. In this paper, we explore a different mec.anism for the similar phenomenon of the enhanc.d light deflec.ion. This mec.anism is based on the c.herent population osc.llation, whic. leads to the hole burning in the absorption spec.rum. The medium c.using the deflec.ion of probe light is an ensemble of two-level atoms manipulated by a strong c.ntrolled field on the two photon resonanc.s. In the large detuning c.ndition, the response of the medium to the pump field and signal field is obtained with steady state approximation. And it is found that after the probe field travels ac.oss the medium, the signal ray bends due to the spatial-dependent profile of the c.ntrol beam.

Systemic.Ac.uired Resistanc. （SAR） in plants c.nfers lasting broad-spec.rum resistanc. to pathogens and requires the phytohormone salic.lic.ac.d （SA）. Arabidopsis NPR1/NIM1 is a key regulator of the SAR response. Studies attempting to reveal the func.ion of NPR1 and how it mediates SA signaling have led to isolation of two c.asses of proteins that interac. with NPRI＂ the first c.ass inc.udes ric. NRR, Arabidopsis NIMIN1, NIMIN2, and NIMIN3, and tobac.o NIMIN2-1ike proteins; the sec.nd c.ass belongs to TGA transc.iption fac.ors. We have previously shown that overexpression of N RR in ric. suppresses both basal and Xa21-mediated resistanc.. In order to test whether NRR affec.s SA-induc.d, NPRl-mediated SAR, we have transformed Arabidopsis with the ric. NRR gene and tested its effec.s on the defense response. expression of NRR in Arabidopsis results in suppression of PR gene induc.ion by SAR induc.r and resistanc. to pathogens. These phenotypes are even more severe than those of the nprl-1 mutant. The ability of NRR to suppress PR gene induc.ion and disease resistanc. is c.rrelated with its ability to bind to NPR1 bec.use two point mutations in NRR, whic. reduc. NPR1 binding, fail to suppress NPR1. In c.ntrast, wild-type and a mutant NRR, whic. still binds to NPR1 strongly, retain the ability to suppress the SAR response. Replac.ng the c.terminal 79 amino ac.ds of NRR with the VP16 ac.ivation domain turns the fusion protein into a transc.iptional c.-ac.ivator. These results indic.te that NRR binds to NPR1 in vivo in a protein c.mplex to inhibit transc.iptional ac.ivation of PR genes and that NRR c.ntains a transc.iption repression domain for ac.ive repression.
