AIM To investigate safety and oncological feasibility of laparoscopic total gastrectomy(LTG) in overweight(OW) *** Patients who underwent total gastrectomy(110 laparoscopic, 211 open) for gastric cancer between January 1999 and July 2016 were included. Propensity score matching selected 152 patients(76 laparoscopic, 76 open), which were subsequently divided into the OW(≥ 25) or non-OW(< 25) group by body mass index. Postoperative outcomes of laparoscopic versus open approaches were compared between OW and non-OW groups. RESULTS In the propensity-matched population, baseline characteristics were comparable between the OW and nonOW groups for the laparoscopy and open groups. In the laparoscopy group, operative time was longer(P = 0.01) in the OW group, however, other perioperative results including complication rates were comparable between the non-OW and OW groups. In the open group, number of retrieved lymph nodes were less(P = 0.03) and local complication rate was more frequent(P = 0.03) in the OW group. CONCLUSION LTG in OW patients remains technically challenging but can be performed safely. Our findings imply that OW has a lesser effect on the laparoscopic versus open approach to total gastrectomy.

In this article, we present our previous research, which highlighted adenosine triphosphate(ATP) as the cause of neuropathic pain during the acute phase of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder(NMOSD). In NMOSD pathology, damageassociated molecular patterns(DAMPs), including ATP, are released from damaged astrocytes, triggering the activation of innate immune cells. ATP is a central mediator of acute pain in NMOSD.

The authors numerically investigated the characteristics of surface plasmons excited on a thin metal grating placed in planer or conical mounting. After formulating the problem, the solution method, Yasuura＇s method （a modal expansion approach with least-squares boundary matching） was described. Although the grating is periodic in one direction, coupling between TE and TM waves Occurs because arbitrary incidence is assumed. This requires the employment of both TE and TM vector modal functions in the analysis. Numerical computations showed：（l） the excitation of surface plasmons with total or partial absorption of incident light; （2） the resonance character of the coefficient of an evanescent order that couples the plasmon surface wave; （3） the field profile and Poynting＇s vector. The plasmons excited on the surfaces of a thin metal grating are classified into three types： SISP, SRSP, and LRSP, different from each other in the feature of field profile and energy flow. In addition, the eigenvalue of a plasmon mode was obtained by solving a sequence of diffraction problems with complex-valued angles of incidence and using the quasi-Newton algorithm to predict the real angle of incidence at which the absorption occurs.

We present relative sea level （RSL） curves in Antarctica derived from glacial isostatic adjustment （GIA）predictions based on the melting scenarios of the Antarctic ice sheet since the Last Glacial Maximum （LGM）given in previous ***,Holocene-age RSL observations obtained at the raised beaches along the coast of Antarctica are shown to be in agreement with the GIA *** differences from previously published ice-loading models regarding the spatial distribution and total mass change of the melted ice are *** models were also derived from GIA modelling; the variations can be attributed to the lack of geological and geographical evidence regarding the history of crustal movement due to ice sheet ***,we summarise the previously published ice load models and demonstrate the RSL curves based on combinations of different ice and earth *** RSL curves calculated by GIA models indicate that the model dependence of both the ice and earth models is significantly large at several sites where RSL observations were *** particular,GIA predictions based on the thin lithospheric thickness show the spatial distributions that are dependent on the melted ice thickness at each *** characteristics result from the short-wavelength deformation of the ***,our predictions strongly suggest that it is possible to find the average ice model despite the use of the different models of lithospheric *** sea level and crustal movement observations,we can deduce the geometry of the post-LGM ice sheets in detail and remove the GIA contribution from the crustal deformation and gravity change observed by space geodetic techniques,such as GPS and GRACE,for the estimation of the Antarctic ice mass change associated with recent global warming.

In recent years, neutrons have been studied for application in fields such as material analysis and boron neutron capture therapy. To create a compact shield for these facilities, a neutron shield concrete is developed. Verifying the homogeneity of the concrete is important to ensure adequate shielding performance. In this research, neutron radiography images of the concrete are taken using the Thermal Neutron Radiography Facility (TNRF) of the JRR-3 research reactor, and the transmission ratio of the thermal neutrons were estimated. The results showed that the transmission ratio of the concrete was almost the same at each depth. © 2014, Science Press. All rights reserved.

Charge transfer cross sections for Kr^q＋ with Ne are calculated quantitatively by using modified classical over barrier model in order to clarify energy dependence of charge transfer cross sections in low energy region. Essential of this model is taking the induced dipole potential into consideration. As a result, this calculation can reproduce systematic energy dependence of experimental results. This suggests that the bending trajectory of the projectile due to an induced dipole potential should be considered to describe pictures of collisions at low energy regime below 1 keV/u.

A SiO2-TiO2 template with ordered tubular mesochannels has been prepared by the sol-gel method. Au nanorods are deposited in the tubular mesochannels of the SiO2-TiO2 template, and the shape of Au is changed from nanorods to nanospheres by ultraviolet irradiation during thermal deposition. The photocatalytic activity of mesoporous SiO2-TiO2 with/without Au nanorods/nanospheres is evaluated. Deposition of Au in the mesoporous SiO2-TiO2 template enhances the photocatalysis of TiO2. Interestingly, the sample containing Au nanorods exhibits higher photocatalytic activity than that with Au nanospheres. Photocatalysis by exciting surface plasmon resonance is not detected in the composite samples regardless of the shape of the deposited Au nanoparticles.
