The current approach of morbidity control of schistosomiasis,a helminth disease of poverty with considerable public health and socioeconomic impact,is based on preventive chemotherapy with *** is a pressing need for new drugs against this disease whose control entirely depends on this single drug that has been widely used over the past 40 *** argue that a broader anthelminthic approach supplementing praziquantel with new antischistosomals targeting different parasite development stages would not only increase efficacy but also reduce the risk for drug *** drugs already approved for other diseases provides a shortcut to clinical trials,as it is expected that such drugs rapidly pass the regulatory *** antischistosomal properties of antimalarial drugs(e.g.,semisynthetic artemisinins,synthetic trioxolanes,trioxaquines and mefloquine)and of drugs being developed or registered for other purposes(e.g.,moxidectin and miltefosin),administered alone or in combination with praziquantel,have been tested in the laboratory and clinical *** avenue to follow is the continued search for new antischistosomal properties in ***,we summarise recent progress made in schistosomiasis chemotherapy,placing particular emphasis on repositioning of existing drugs against schistosomiasis.

Bi-Te nanoplates （NPs） grown by a low pressure vapor transport method have been studied by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy （AFM）, energy- dispersive X-ray spectroscopy （EDS）, and Auger electron spectroscopy （AES）. We find that the surface of relatively thick （more than tens of nanometers） Bi2Te3 NPs is oxidized in the air and forms a bump under heating with moderate laser power, as revealed by the emergence of Raman lines characteristic of Bi2O3 and TeO2 and characterization by AFM and EDS. Further increase of laser power burns holes on the surface of the NPs. Thin （thicknesses less than 20 nm） NPs with stoichiometry different from Bi2Te3 were also studied. Raman lines from non-stoichiometric NPs are different from those of stoichiometric ones and display characteristic changes with the increase of Bi concentration. Thin NPs with the same thickness but different stoichiometries show different color contrast compared to the substrate in the optical image. This indicates that the optical absorption coefficient in thin Bi-Te NPs strongly depends on their stoichiometry.

This paper presents the design,fabrication,and characterization of a real-time voltage-tunable terahertz metamaterial based on microelectromechanical systems and broadside-coupled split-ring *** our metamaterial,the magnetic and electric interactions between the coupled resonators are modulated by a comb-drive actuator,which provides continuous lateral shifting between the coupled resonators by up to 20μ*** these strongly coupled split-ring resonators,both a symmetric mode and an anti-symmetric mode are *** increasing lateral shift,the electromagnetic interactions between the split-ring resonators weaken,resulting in frequency shifting of the resonant *** the entire lateral shift range,the symmetric mode blueshifts by~60 GHz,and the anti-symmetric mode redshifts by~50 *** amplitude of the transmission at 1.03 THz is modulated by 74%;moreover,a 180°phase shift is achieved at 1.08 *** tunable metamaterial device has myriad potential applications,including terahertz spatial light modulation,phase modulation,and chemical ***,the scheme that we have implemented can be scaled to operate at other frequencies,thereby enabling a wide range of distinct applications.

Much of an animal＇s health status, life history, and behavior are dictated by interactions with its endogenous and exogenous bacterial communities. Unfortunately, interactions between hosts and members of their resident bacterial community are often ignored in animal behavior and behavioral ecology. Here, we aim to identify the nature of host-microbe interactions in a nonmodel organism, the African social spider Stegodyphus dumicola. We collected and identified bacteria from the cuticles of spiders in situ and then exposed spiders to bacterial monocultures cultures via topical application or injection. We also topically inoculated spiders with a concomitant ＂cocktail＂ of bacteria and measured the behavior of spiders daily for 24 days after inoculation. Lastly, we collected and identified bacteria from the cuticles of prey items in the capture webs of spiders, and then fed spiders domestic crickets which had been injected with these bacteria. We also injected 1 species of prey-borne bacteria into the hemolymph of spiders. Only Bacillus thuringiensis caused increased mortality when injected into the hemolymph of spiders, whereas no bacterial monocultures caused increased mortality when applied topically, relative to control solutions. However, a bacterial cocktail of cuticular bacteria caused weight loss and mortality when applied topically, yet did not detectibly alter spider behavior. Consuming prey injected with prey-borne bacteria was associated with an elongated lifespan in spiders. Thus, indirect evidence from multiple experiments suggests that the effects of these bacteria on spider survivorship appear contingent on their mode of colonization and whether they are applied in monoculture or within a mixed cocktail. We urge that follow-up studies should test these host-microbe interactions across different social contexts to determine the role that microbes play in colony performance.
