Cancer cells tend to develop resistance to chemotherapy and enhance aggressive-ness.A counterintuitive approach is to tame aggressiveness by an agent that acts opposite to chemotherapeutic *** on this strategy,induced tumor-suppressing cells(iTSCs)have been generated from tumor cells and mesenchymal stem ***,we examined the possi-bility of generating iTSCs from lymphocytes by activating PKA signaling for suppressing the pro-gression of osteosarcoma(OS).While lymphocyte-derived CM did not present anti-tumor capabilities,the activation of PKA converted them into *** PKA conversely gener-ated tumor-promotive *** a mouse model,PKA-activated CM suppressed tumorinduced bone *** analysis revealed that moesin(MSN)and calreticulin(Calr),which are highly expressed intracellular proteins in many cancers,were enriched in PKA-activated CM,and they acted as extracellular tumor suppressors through CD44,CD47,and *** study presented a unique option for cancer treatment by generating iTSCs that secret tumor-suppressive proteins such as MSN and *** envision that identifying these tu-mor suppressors and predicting their binding partners such as CD44,which is an FDA-approved oncogenic target to be inhibited,may contribute to developing targeted protein therapy.

Efects of amine, amine salt and amide on the behaviour of carbon dioxide absorption into calcium hydroxide suspension to precipitate calcium carbonate

The amount of carbon dioxide （CO2） absorption and calcium ion （Ca^2＋） concentration besides the pH of aqueous solution were observed during the COz absorption to precipitate calcium carbonate （CaCO3） from calcium hydroxide （Ca（OH）2）. A reaction rate-limiting effect of an amount of CO2 absorption without any organic additives in the early stage of the precipitation was observed, which was attributed to an interruption effect of bicarbonate ion （HCO3） on the precipitation of CaCO3. The improvement for the reaction rate was achieved not only by amine additives but also by neutral additives such as ε-caprolactam or amine salt. When the hexamethylene diamine was dissolved in the solution, successive change of crystal forms of CaCO3 aragonite to calcite in aqueous suspensions, confirmed by Ca^2＋ concentration change and X-ray diffraction, was concluded that a local environment around the amine group in aqueous solution and an interaction of the diamine with precipitated CaCO3 particles were important factors for these reactions.

Adult Congenital Lumbar Kyphosis Requiring Anteroposterior Correction and Fusion: A Case Report with 32-Year Follow-Up

Congenital pure kyphosis due to failure of vertebral body segmentation is a relatively rare entity, and surgical intervention is infrequent compared to that for failure of vertebral body formation [1] [2]. There are very few reports of long-term follow-up of surgical treatment in patients with congenital pure kyphosis, and all the reported cases were diagnosed as failure of formation and had an age at the time of surgery of less than 18 years. It is important for orthopedic surgeons to follow the postoperative course of rare cases over 30 years. Here, we present a surgically treated case with ultra-long term follow-up of a 50-year-old patient with congenital pure kyphosis of the lumbar spine. Imaging of the lumbar spine showed six vertebrae and an unsegmented bar at L3-4 causing a pure kyphosis of 54°. The wedge-shaped block vertebra had 4 pedicles with the neural foramen between the pedicles without concomitant disc space, with compensatory thoracic hypokyphosis and lower lumbar hyperlordosis. One-stage correction and fusion surgery using anterior opening and posterior closing osteotomy was successfully performed. Both clinical and radiographic results were excellent and have been maintained for over 30 years postoperatively. The basic principle in the surgical treatment of adult spinal deformity is to achieve and maintain a good global sagittal balance over time. This case reaffirms the importance of spinopelvic harmony.

Influence of sputtering power on properties of ZnO thin films fabricated by RF sputtering in room temperature

Depth of invasion to the bladder wall as a prognostic factor and its association with circulating cell-free DNA levels in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer

Background:Radical cystectomy(RC)is the standard surgical treatment for patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer,but the prognosis is not favorable,and new prognostic factors need to be *** investigated the potential of depth of invasion(DOI)as a prognostic factor in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer who underwent ***,we examined the asso-ciation between preoperative levels of circulating cell-free DNA and DOI.Materials and methods:We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent RC between January 2007 and December 2017;those who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy were *** of invasion was measured using hematoxylin-eosin-stained RC specimens.Results:Of the 121 patients selected,41(33.9％)were eligible for *** median follow-up period was 14 months and mean DOI was 17 mm(range,2-75 mm).Long DOI(＞17 mm)was significantly associated with shorter progression-free survival(hazard ratio,14.5;95％confidence interval,3.9-53.97,p＜0.0001)and cancer-specific survival(hazard ratio,18.97;95％confidence interval,4.04-88.99,p=0.0002)compared with short *** analysis revealed that DOI was an independent risk factor for cancer-specific *** levels of circulating cell-free DNA were significantly higher in patients with a longer DOI than in those with short DOI(65 vs.20 ng/mL,respectively;p=0.028).Conclusions:Depth of invasion predicted with levels of circulating cell-free DNA and thus could be a useful prognostic factor.

Effects of bottom bracings on torsional dynamic characteristics of horizontally curved twin I-girder bridges with different curvatures

Curved twin I-girder bridges (CTIGBs) have low torsional stiffness that makes them vulnerable to dynamic loads. This study investigates the effects of bottom bracings on the torsional dynamic characteristics of CTIGBs. Five types of bottom bracings are designed to investigate their effects on the dynamic characteristics of CTIGBs with different curvatures under free and forced vibrations. To perform numerical investigations, three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) bridge and vehicle models are established using commercial ANSYS code, and then a vehicle-bridge interaction analysis approach is proposed. Road roughness profiles generated from power spectral density and cross spectral functions are also taken into account in the analyses. The numerical results show that torsional frequencies increase significantly after providing bottom bracings, and the increasing rate depends on the type of bottom bracings and their locations of installation. Bottom bracings can act as load transmitting members from one main girder to the others. Large negative bearing forces that have occurred in bridges with small radii of curvatures can be remarkably reduced by providing bottom bracing systems. It is found that the performances of several bottom bracing systems are effective in improving the torsional dynamic characteristics of the bridges in this study.

Urban climate in the Tokyo metropolitan area in Japan

Long-term climate changes related with urbanization in Tokyo, Japan, and recent temperature and heavy rainfall distribution in the Tokyo metropolitan area are reviewed. A relatively high temperature increase in annual mean temperature at the rate of 3.0°C/century was detected in Tokyo for the period 1901–2015. Some observational evidence showed the existence of both thermal and mechanical effects of urbanization on recent heavy rainfall occurrences, and modeling studies also support precipitation enhancement. Urban influences were recognized in other climatological elements, such as number of fog days, relative humidity, and wind circulation.

IMPROVEMENT OF BUBBLE MODEL FOR CAVITATING FLOW SIMULATIONS

In the present research, a bubble dynamics based model for cavitating flow simulations is extended to higher void fraction region for wider range of applications. The present bubble model is based on the so-called Rayleigh-Plesset equation that calculates a temporal bubble radius with the surrounding liquid pressure and is considered to be valid in an area below a certain void fraction. The solution algorithm is modified so that the Rayleigh-Plesset equation is no more solved once the bubble radius （or void fraction） reaches at a certain value till the liquid pressure recovers above the vapor pressure in order to overcome this problem. This procedure is expected to stabilize the numerical calculation. The results of simple two-dimensional flow field are presented compared with the existing bubble model.
