Background: Previous studies reported that non-small cell carcinoma patients characterized by female gender, never-smoking status and adenocarcinoma histology were more likely to harbor epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations. However, some studies failed to find the relationship between EGFR mutation and gender. Methods: One hundred and eighty-four consecutive patients (90 men and 94 women) of resected lung adenocarcinoma were studied retrospectively. Since the smoking rate is significantly higher in men, we assumed that gender difference might be a seeming factor affected by smoking. Therefore we subdivided the patients into 2 groups: never- and ever-smokers. Results: The number of ever-smokers was 94.44% in men, whereas 8.51% in women. EGFR mutation was positive in 48.9%. For overall patients, EGFR mutation status was associated with gender, pStage, pT status, lepidic dominant histologic subtype, pure/mixed groundglass opacity (GGO) on computed tomography (CT) and smoking status. However, in ever-smokers, EGFR mutation status was associated with lepidic histologic subtype and GGO on CT, but not others including gender. Similar results were also found in never-smokers, and gender was not also related to EGFR mutation in never smokers. Conclusion: The EGFR mutational frequency among men and women was not significantly different when lung adenocarcinoma patients were stratified into never- and ever-smokers.

The vibration behavior of the ground and houses caused by monorail traffic is discussed in this paper. The environmental ground vibration problem discussed herein occurs in a residential area near a monorail used for public transportation, Vibrations were measured on the ground at the side of monorail piers lacing the residential area and within the affected houses. Results indicate that the vibration level in the house was 60 dB or more, a level high enough to warrant complaints, Peculiar geological and geographical features are thought to contribute to the amplification of low frequency （-10 Hz） ground vibrations to irritable levels in these homes even though a distance of≥30 m separates the residential area and the monorail.

Comparison of Cellulose Decomposition by Microwave Plasma and Radio Frequency Plasma

Biomass conversion by plasma has the advantage of mainly producing gaseous products, H2, CO and CO2. Though the thermal plasma has been used for this conversion, the plasma temperature is too high to be unfit for the conversion biomass. The temperature of cold plasma, however, is lower under 3000 K. It expects to be adequate for biomass conversion. Cold plasma can be obtained with irradiation microwave (2.45 GHz) or radio frequency (13.5 MHz) under reduce gas pressure. Therefore, in present study, the effective decomposition of cellulose by microwave plasma (MWP) and radio frequency plasma (RFP) is examined. The conversion of cellulose by MWP (XMWP) is higher than that by RFP (XRFP), irrespective of the reaction time. XMWP and XRFP reach 92.8 wt% at 10 min and 68.1 wt% at 30 min. The maximum yield of gaseous products (Ygas) by MWP is 85.1 wt% at 10 min, higher by 23.2 wt% than Ygas by RFP at 30 min. The amount of H2 and CO obtained by MWP is 18.0 mmol/g and 23.5 mmol/g, it is larger than that obtained by RFP. Comparing the relationship between conversion and yield, Ygas of MWP is slightly higher than that of RFP under X of 60 wt%, and both Ygas is almost same over 60 wt%. The amount of H2 and CO obtained by MWP is larger by 9.3 mmol/g and 9.6 mmol/g than that obtained by RFP. C, H and O element in cellulose is mainly distributed to H2 and CO by MWP. RFP mainly distributes H and O element to the other gases without H2 and CO. In addition, a large amount of C element is remains in the residue. Those results is found that MWP was more suitable for cellulose gasification than RFP, since MWP can highly convert C, H and O element to H2 and CO by higher energy of microwave frequency in comparison with radio frequency.

Effect of Inhaled Tiotropium as the Perioperative Management of Patients Undergoing Pulmonary Resection for Primary Lung Cancer

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of perioperative tiotropium therapy for patients undergoing pulmonary resection for primary lung cancer. The short-term tiotropium effect was investigated by perioperative pulmonary function and “lung age”. Methods: The fifty-five patients who underwent a lobectomy and had tiotropium treatment available from October 2007 through May 2009 were the subjects. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to their airway limitation such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) or a history of smoking;those with COPD (%FEV1 ≤70%, C-group, n = 22), smokers (%FEV1 > 70%, S-group, n = 10) and non-smokers (%FEV1 > 70%, N-group, n = 23). As the bronchodilator groups, the C- and S-groups received inhaled tiotropium bromide (18 μg once daily) for 1 week before surgery until at least 3 weeks after surgery without interruption, and as a control, the N-group had no treatment. The preoperative baselines, the predicted postoperative values, and the actual postoperative ones were measured by the pulmonary function test. The changed rates were calculated and denoted as ΔVC, ΔFEV1, ΔVC%, and ΔFEV1/FVC, from the baseline of the predicted postoperative values. The mean “real age” and “lung age” were calculated. Results: In the S-group, the parameters of ΔVC, ΔFEV1, ΔVC%, and ΔFEV1/FVC significantly increased compared to those of the N-group. In the C-group, the increased extents of ΔFEV1 and ΔFEV1/FVC were lower compared to those in the S-group (not significant). In the N-group, the parameters of ΔVC, ΔFEV1, and ΔVC% decreased. The postoperative “lung age” and “real age” were increased to 29.5 ± 18.0 year-old in the C-group, 25.8 ± 18.0 in the S-group, and 24.7 ± 17.0 in the N-group. Lung resection affected the “lung age”;the aging was a 28.9 ± 12.7 year-old increase in the N-group. In the C- and S-group, the “lung age” was a 14-year-old increase. It is believed that mechanical stimuli, such as stretching of the extracellular matrix, are transmitted into cells via focal adhesion complexes and the actin cytoskeleton. Transmission dynamics of strain from the extracellular matrix into intracellular organelles is crucial to clarify the mechanosensing mechanisms of cells. In this study, we observed deformation behavior of actin stress fibers under uniaxial stretch using an originally developed cell-stretching microelectromechanical system (MEMS) device. It was difficult to conduct in situ observation of cells under stretch using conventional cell stretching devices, because motion artifacts such as rigid displacement during stretch application were not negligible. Our novel cell-stretching MEMS device suppressed rigid displacement while stretching, and we succeeded in obtaining time-lapse images of stretched cells. Uniaxial strain with a 10% magnitude and strain rate of 0.5%/sec was applied to cells. Deformation behaviors of the cells and actin stress fibers were recorded using a confocal laser scanning microscope. In time-lapse images of stretched cells, strains along each stress fiber were measured manually. As a result, in cells with a relatively homogeneous stress fiber structure oriented in one direction, distribution of the axial strain on stress fibers generally corresponded to deformation of the stretching sheet on which the cells had adhered. However, in cells with a heterogeneous stress fiber structure oriented in several directions, we found that the strain distribution along stress fibers was not homogeneous. In regions around the cell nucleus, there was a more complicated strain distribution compared with other regions. Our results suggest the cell nucleus with a stiff mechanical resistance yields such a complicated strain distribution in stress fibers.

Vortex levitation attains non-contact handling by injecting air through a tangential nozzle into a cylindrical cup generating the swirling flow. The precessing of the swirling flow causes pressure fluctuation. This phenomenon becomes apparent as the gap between the cup and workpiece increases, which significantly disturbs the stability of conveyance. In this paper, suppression of pressure fluctuation by a cylindrical column that stabilizes the vortex levitation is described and its mechanism is mentioned. According to the experimental set up, the pressure was measured at the center of the workpiece and the wall of the cup;velocity field under the work piece was visualized by PIV. The result suggested that the larger diameter column denoted the effect on suppression of the fluctuation because the precessing of the swirling flow became stable. On the other hand, variation of the column thickness had insignificant effect on suppressing the fluctuation, but sucking force became weakened since the swirling velocity decreased.

目的　通过com1基因序列比较 ,了解贝氏柯克斯体中国分离株的一些遗传特征。方法　对贝氏柯克斯体中国分离株的com1基因进行扩增、测序和分析 ,将我们的结果与国外研究结果进行比较。结果　在 7个中国分离株中 ,可检测到 3种不同的com1基因序列。除质粒型相同的分离株表现出类似的com1基因序列外 ,质粒型为QpRS的中国分离株可被单独划分成一个新的基因组。结论　本研究结果显示 ,根据com1基因序列进行的贝氏柯克斯体株基因分组与分离株所含质粒型有很大的相关性 ,而与以前报道的疾病形式和分离株的地理分布无关。

Supraceliac Aortic Clamping for Repair of Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in Patients with Short Aortic Neck Length

Objective: Prompt bleeding control with proximal aortic clamping and subsequent aortic repair are very important for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. However, unsuitable anatomy, such as short aortic neck length, not only disturbs the means to an expeditious repair, but may also increase morbidity and mortality. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of supraceliac aortic clamping for improving surgical outcomes for patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, who have a short aortic neck length. Method: Between April 2010 and September 2015, eighteen patients underwent emergent open surgical repair of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. Eight patients with a short aortic neck length underwent supraceliac aortic clamping, and 10 underwent infrarenal aortic clamping. Results: The mean supraceliac aortic clamping time was 30 ± 7 minutes. There was 1 operative death in the infrarenal aortic clamping group due to respiratory failure, and the overall operative mortality was 6%. There were no significant differences between the 2 groups with respect to postoperative complication rates or mortality. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in variables of renal function between the 2 groups, through-out the study period. Conclusion: Supraceliac aortic clamping was associated with minimal mortality and morbidity, but not with harmful effects on postoperative renal function. Thus, supraceliac aortic clamping can be safely applied for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm with short aortic neck length.
