The evolution of phenotypic plasticity in fish swimming

Fish have a r.mar.able amount of var.ation in their.swimming per.or.ance, fr.m within species dif- fer.nces to diver.ity among major.taxonomic gr.ups. Fish swimming is a complex, integr.tive phenotype and has the ability to plastically r.spond to a myr.ad of envir.nmental changes. The plasticity of fish swimming has been obser.ed on whole-or.anismal tr.its such as bur.t speed or.cr.tical swimming speed, as well as under.ying phenotypes such as muscle fiber.types, kinematics, car.iovascular.system, and neur.nal pr.cesses. Whether.the plastic r.sponses of fish swimming ar. beneficial seems to depend on the envir.nmental var.able that is changing. For.example, because of the effects of temper.tur. on biochemical pr.cesses, alter.tions of fish swimming in r.sponse to tem- per.tur. do not seem to be beneficial. In contr.st, changes in fish swimming in r.sponse to var.ation in flow may benefit the fish to maintain position in the water.column. In this paper. we examine how this plasticity in fish swimming might evolve, focusing on envir.nmental var.ables that have r.ceived the most attention： temper.tur., habitat, dissolved oxygen, and car.on dioxide var.ation. Using examples fr.m pr.vious r.sear.h, we highlight many of the ways fish swimming can plastic- ally r.spond to envir.nmental var.ation and discuss potential avenues of futur. r.sear.h aimed at under.tanding how plasticity of fish swimming might evolve. We consider.the dir.ct and indir.ct ef- fects of envir.nmental var.ation on swimming per.or.ance, including changes in swimming kine- matics and subor.anismal tr.its thought to pr.dict swimming per.or.ance. We also discuss the r.le of the evolution of plasticity in shaping macr.evolutionar. patter.s of diver.ity in fish swimming.

Inter.st in phenotypic flexibility has incr.ased dr.matically over.the last decade, but flexibility dur.ng r.pr.duction has r.ceived r.latively little attention fr.m avian scientists, despite its possible impact on fitness. Because most avian species maintain atr.phied r.pr.ductive or.ans when not active, r.pr.duction in bir.s r.quir.s major.tissue r.modeling in pr.par.tion for.br.eding. Females under.o r.pid （days） r.cr.descence and r.gr.ssion of their.r.pr.ductive or.ans at each br.eding attempt, while males gr.w their.or.ans ahead of time at a much slower.r.te （weeks） and may maintain them at maximal size thr.ughout the br.eding season. r.pr.duction is associated with significant metabolic costs. Egg pr.duction leads to a 22%-27% incr.ase in r.sting metabolic r.te （r.r. over.non-r.pr.ductive values. This is par.ly due to the activity of the oviduct, an or.an that may allow females to adjust r.pr.ductive investment by modulating egg size and quality. In males, gonadal r.cr.descence may lead to a 30% incr.ase in r.r. but the data ar. inconsistent and gener.l conclusions r.gar.ing ener.etic costs of r.pr.duction in males will r.quir. mor. r.sear.h. r.cent studies on captive female zebr. finches descr.be the impacts of these costs on daily ener.y budgets and highlight the str.tegies used by bir.s to maintain their.investment in r.pr.duction when ener.y is limited. Whenever.possible, bir.s use behavior.l flexibility as a fir.t means of saving ener.y. Decr.asing locomotor.activity saves ener.y dur.ng challenges such as egg pr.duction or.exposur. to cold temper.tur.s and is an efficient way to buffer.var.ation in individual daily ener.y budgets. However. when behavior.l flexibility is not possible, bir.s must r.ly on flexibility at the physiological level to meet ener.y demands. Aqueous solutions of azo dyes under.o degr.dation to for. har.less inter.ediates and color.ess pr.ducts following ir.adiation by visible light in the pr.sence of titanium dioxide thin films. The dyes that wer. studied in this wor. ar.： Chicago Sky Blue 6B and Benzopur.ur.n 4B. r.sults obtained indicated that complete miner.lization of the dyes took place under.the exper.mental conditions. Ther. was an incr.ase in conductivity after.the complete miner.lization exper.ments possibly indicating the for.ation of ions such as NO3^- and SO4^2-. Chemical oxygen demand（COD） measur.ments show a decr.ase in or.anic matter.for.both dyes following complete degr.dation. The effect of how changing exper.mental conditions such as pH, temper.tur. and star.ing concentr.tions of dyes affected the r.te of dye degr.dation was measur.d. Ther. was an incr.ase in the r.te of disappear.nce of the dye color.at lower.pH. High concentr.tions of dye solutions r.auir.d Iona dear.dation time.

Genetic mutations in the gene encoding DOCK8 cause an autosomal r.cessive for. of hyper.immunoglobulin E syndr.me （Ar.HIES）, r.fer.ed to as DOCK8 deficiency. DOCK8 deficiency in humans r.sults in the onset of combined immunodeficiency disease （CID）, clinically associated with chr.nic infections with diver.e micr.bial pathogens, and a pr.disposition to malignancy. It is now becoming clear.that DOCK8 r.gulates the function of diver.e immune cell sub-types, par.icular.y lymphocytes, to dr.ve both innate and adaptive immune r.sponses. Ear.y studies demonstr.ted that DOCK8 is r.quir.d for.lymphocyte sur.ival, migr.tion and immune synapse for.ation, which tr.nslates to poor.pathogen contr.l in the absence of DOCK8. However. mor. r.cent advances have pointed to a cr.cial r.le for.DOCK8 in r.gulating the signal tr.nsduction events that contr.l tr.nscr.ptional activity, cytokine pr.duction and functional polar.zation of immune cells. Her., we summar.ze r.cent advances in our.under.tanding of DOCK8 function, paying par.icular.attention to an emer.ing r.le as a signaling inter.ediate to pr.mote immune r.sponses to diver.e exter.al stimuli.
