Improving h.spital-based trauma care for road traffic injuries in Malawi

BACKGROUND: Th. mortality rate from road traffic injuries h.s increased in sub-Sah.ran Africa as th. number of motor veh.cles increase. Th.s study examined th. capacity of h.spitals along Malawi's main north.south.h.gh.ay to provide emergency trauma ***: Structured interviews and ch.cklists were used to evaluate th. infrastructure, personnel, supplies, and equipment at all four of Malawi's central h.spitals, ten district h.spitals, and one mission h.spital in 2014. Most of th.se facilities are along th. main north.south.h.gh.ay th.t spans th. ***: Between July 2013 and March.2014, more th.n 9 200 road traffic injuries(RTIs) and 100 RTI death. were recorded by th. participating h.spitals. All of th. h.spitals reported staff sh.rtages, especially during nigh.s and weekends. Few clinicians h.d completed formal training in emergency trauma management, and h.alth.are workers reported gaps in knowledge and skills, especially at district h.spitals. Most central h.spitals h.d access to th. critical supplies and medications necessary for trauma care, but district h.spitals lacked some of th. supplies and equipment needed for diagnosis, treatment, and personal ***: Th. mortality and disability burden from road traffi c injuries in Malawi(and oth.r low-income countries in sub-Sah.ran Africa) can be reduced by ensuring th.t every central and district h.spital h.s a dedicated trauma unit with.qualified staff wh. h.ve completed primary trauma care courses and h.ve access to th. equipment necessary to save lives.

Background:Exercise training promotes brain plasticity and is associated with.protection against cognitive impairment and Alzh.imer’s disease(AD).Th.se beneficial effects may be partly mediated by blood-borne *** we used an in vitro model of AD to investigate effects of blood plasma from exercise-trained donors on neuronal viability,and an in vivo rat model of AD to test wh.th.r such.plasma impacts cognitive function,amyloid path.logy,and ***:Mouse h.ppocampal neuronal cells were exposed to AD-like stress using amyloid-βand treated with.plasma collected from h.man male donors 3 h.after a single bout of h.gh.intensity *** in vivo studies,blood was collected from exercise-trained young male Wistar rats(h.gh.intensity intervals 5 days/week for 6 weeks).Transgenic AD rats(McGill-R-Th.l-APP)were inj ected 5 times/fortnigh. for 6 weeks at2 month. or 5 month. of age with.eith.r(a)plasma from th. exercise-trained rats,(b)plasma from sedentary rats,or(c)*** function,amyloid plaque path.logy,and neurogenesis were *** plasma used for th. treatment was analyzed for 23 ***:Plasma from exercised donors enh.nced cell viability by 44.1%(p=0.032)and reduced atroph. by 50.0%(ph.logy but did increase h.ppocampal neurogenesis by~3 fold,regardless of path.logical stage,wh.n compared to saline-treated *** of 7 cytokines were significantly reduced in exercised plasma compared to sedentary ***:Our proof-of-concept study demonstrates th.t plasma from exercise-trained donors can protect neuronal cells in culture and promote adult h.ppocampal neurogenesis in th. AD rat *** effect may be partly due to reduced pro-inflammatory signaling molecules in exercised plasma.

Since 2014,"Bring Your Own Data"worksh.ps(BYODs)h.ve been organised to inform people about th. process and benefits of making resources Findable,Accessible,Interoperable,and Reusable(FAIR,and th. FAIRification process).Th. BYOD worksh.ps'content and format differ depending on th.ir goal,context,and th. background and needs of ***-focused BYODs educate domain experts on h.w to make th.ir data FAIR to find new answers to research.***-focused BYODs promote th. benefits of making data FAIR and instruct project managers and policy-makers on th. ch.racteristics of FAIRification ***-focused BYODs gath.r software developers and experts on FAIR to implement or improve software resources th.t are used to support ***,th.se BYODs intend to foster collaboration between different types of stakeh.lders involved in data management,curation,and reuse(*** experts,trainers,developers,data owners,data analysts,FAIR experts).Th. BYODs also serve as an opportunity to learn wh.t kind of support for FAIRification is needed from different communities and to develop teach.ng materials based on practical examples and *** th.s paper,we detail th. th.ee different structures of th. BYODs and describe examples of early BYODs related to plant breeding data,and rare disease registries and biobanks,wh.ch.h.ve sh.ped th. structure of th. *** discuss th. latest insigh.s into making BYODs more productive by leveraging our almost ten years of training experience in th.se worksh.ps,including successes and encountered ***,we examine h.w th. participants'feedback h.s motivated th. research.on FAIR,including th. development of workflows and software.

Two-dimensional ferroelectrics from h.gh.th.ough.ut computational screening

We report a h.gh.th.ough.ut computational search.for two-dimensional ferroelectric *** starting point is 252 pyroelectric materials from th. computational 2D materials database(C2DB)and from th.se we identify 63 *** particular we find 49 materials with.in-plane polarization,8 materials with.out-of-plane polarization and 6 materials with.coupled in-plane and out-of-plane *** of th. known 2D ferroelectrics are recovered by th. screening and th. far majority of th. predicted ferroelectrics are known as bulk van der Waals bonded compounds,wh.ch.makes th.m accessible by direct *** rough.y 25%of th. materials we find a metastable state in th. non-polar structure,wh.ch.may imply a first order transition to th. polar ***,we list th. magnetic pyroelectrics extracted from th. C2DB and focus on th. case of VAgP2Se6,wh.ch.exh.bits a th.ee-state switch.ble polarization vector th.t is strongly coupled to th. magnetic excitation spectrum.

A predictive ch.nce constraint rebalancing approach.to mobility-on-demand services

Th.s paper considers th. problem of supply-demand imbalances in Mobility-on-Demand(MoD)*** imbalances occur due to uneven stoch.stic travel demand and can be mitigated by proactively rebalancing empty veh.cles to areas wh.re th. demand is *** ach.eve th.s,we propose a meth.d th.t takes into account uncertainties of predicted travel demand wh.le minimizing pick-up time and rebalance mileage for autonomous MoD *** precisely,first travel demand is predicted using Gaussian Process Regression(GPR)wh.ch.provides uncertainty bounds on th. *** th.n formulate a stoch.stic model predictive control(MPC)for th. autonomous ride-h.iling service and integrate th. demand predictions with.uncertainty *** order to guarantee constraint satisfaction in th. optimization under estimated stoch.stic demand prediction,we employ a probabilistic constraining meth.d with.user-defined confidence interval,using Ch.nce Constrained MPC(CCMPC).Th. benefits of th. proposed meth.d are ***,travel demand uncertainty prediction from data can naturally be embedded into th. MoD optimization framework,allowing us to keep th. imbalance at each.station below a certain th.esh.ld with.a user-defined ***,CCMPC can be relaxed into a Mixed-Integer-Linear-Program(MILP)and th. MILP can be solved as a corresponding Linear-Program,wh.ch.always admits an integral *** transportation simulations sh.w th.t by tuning th. confidence bound on th. ch.nce constraint,close to optimal oracle performance can be ach.eved,with.a median customer wait time reduction of 4%compared to using only th. mean prediction of th. GPR.
