The Cretaceous/Paleogene （K/Pg） Working Group, after many years of studies, voted to define the Global Stratotype Section and Point （GSSP） for the base of the Danian Stage at the base of the boundary clay at a section near El Kef Tunisia. The GSSP was approved by the International Commission on Stratigraphy （ICS） and ratified by the International Union of Geological Sciences （IUGS） in 1991. Nevertheless, the GSSP was not officially published, although some papers dealing with geological aspects of the K/Pg boundary at El Kef have been published and this is quite well known. In April 2006, the GSSP was revisited, a marker was put in place and protection of the site was requested. Many correlation criteria are present at the GSSP of which the most useful are the meteorite impact evidence （iridium anomaly, Ni-rich spinel, etc.） and the mass extinction of planktic micro- and nannofossils. This event coincides with the GSSP, allowing us to propose that the K/Pg boundary is marked exactly by the moment of the meteorite impact, which implies that all the sediments generated by the impact belong to the Danian. This definition solves problems of correlation in the Yucatan peninsula （Mexico） and its surroundings.

Ray tracing Particle Image Velocimetry(RT-PIV)is an optical technique for high resolution velocity measurements in challenging optical systems,such as transparent packed beds,that uses ray tracing to correct for distortions introduced by transparent geometries in the light *** ray tracing based correction is a post processing step applied to the raw PIV particle images before classical PIV *** this study,RT-PIV is performed in the top layer of a body centred cubic(bcc)sphere packing with gaseous flow,where optical access is obtained by the use of transparent N-BK7 glass balls with a diameter of d=40 ***-PIV introduces new experimental and numerical challenges,for example a limited field of view,illumination difficulties,a very large required depth of field and high sensitivity to geometric parameters used in the ray tracing *** challenges and their implications are the main scope and discussed in the present ***,the validation of the ray tracing reconstruction step is presented and examples for the obtained corrected vector fields in a packed bed are *** results show the strength of the method in reconstructing velocity fields behind transparent spheres that would not have been accessible by optical measurement techniques without the ray tracing correction.

Comparing two IBM implementations for the simulation of uniform packed beds

Nowadays,the design of fixed packed bed reactors still relies on empirical correlations,which,especially for small tube to particle diameter ratios,are mostly too inaccurate because of the presence of wall ***,the simulation of fixed packed bed reactors plays an important role to predict and control the flow and process parameters in such,nowadays and in the *** of its straightforward applicability to non-uniform packings with particles of arbitrary shapes,the immersed boundary method(IBM)has advantages over other numerical methods and is used more and more *** paper compares two approaches of IBMs for the simulation of fixed bed reactors with spherical shaped *** classic,smooth approach is compared to the straightforward to implement blocked-off method for velocity fields above the fixed bed for particle Reynolds numbers of 300 and *** from experimental inline PIV-measurements of the reactor to be simulated serve as a basis for *** good agreement with the experiment is found for both simulation methodologies with higher resolutions,considering the more stable flow at a particle Reynolds number of *** in the different IBM approaches occurred for the more unsteady flow at a particle Reynolds number of *** to the blocked-off method,the smooth IBM reflects the formation of additional jets and recirculation zones better right above the bed,though increasing the fluid mesh resolution improves the accuracy of the blocked-off ***,a more diffusive behaviour is found for the blocked-off simulations due to the stairstep representation,which is avoided by using interpolation stencils as in the smooth *** higher mesh refinement in the blocked-off IBM this effect can be reduced,but this also increases the computational effort.

Outcome after early mobilization following hip reconstruction in children with developmental hip dysplasia and luxation

AIM: To compare the effect of calcium and cholecalciferol alone and along with additional sodium fluoride or ibandronate on bone mineral density (BMD) and fractures in patients with Crohn's disease (CD). METHODS: Patients (n =148) with reduced BMD (T-score < -1) were randomized to receive cholecalciferol (1000 IU) and calcium citrate (800 mg) daily alone(group A, n = 32) or along with additional sodium fluoride (25 mg bid) (group B, n = 62) or additional ibandronate (1 mg iv/3-monthly) (group C, n = 54). Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry of the lumbar spine (L1-L4) and proximal right femur and X-rays of the spine were performed at baseline and after 1.0, 2.25 and 3.5 years. Fracture-assessment included visual reading of X-rays and quantitative morphometry of vertebral bodies (T4-L4).RESULTS: One hundred and twenty three (83.1%) patients completed the first year for intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis. Ninety two (62.2%) patients completed the second year and 71 (47.8%) the third year available for per-protocol (PP) analysis. With a significant increase in T-score of the lumbar spine by +0.28 ± 0.35 [95% conf idence interval (CI): 0.162-0.460, P < 0.01], +0.33 ± 0.49 (95% CI: 0.109-0.558, P < 0.01), +0.43 ± 0.47 (95% CI: 0.147-0.708, P < 0.01) in group A, +0.22 ± 0.33 (95% CI: 0.125-0.321, P < 0.01); +0.47 ± 0.60 (95% CI: 0.262-0.676, P < 0.01), +0.51 ± 0.44 (95% CI: 0.338-0.682, P < 0.01) in group B and +0.22 ± 0.38 (95% CI: 0.111-0.329, P < 0.01), +0.36 ± 0.53 (95% CI: 0.147-0.578, P < 0.01), +0.41 ± 0.48 (95% CI: 0.238-0.576, P < 0.01) in group C, respectively, during the 1.0, 2.25 and 3.5 year periods (PP analysis), no treatment regimen was superior in any in- or between-group analyses. With the growing importance of the black soldier fly(Hermetia illucens)for both sustainable food production and waste management as well as for science,a great demand of understanding its immune system ***,we present the first description of the circulating larval hemocytes with special emphasis on uptake of microorganisms and distinguishing hemocyte *** histological,zymographic,and cytometric methods and with a set of hemocyte binding lectins and antibodies,the hemocytes of *** are identified as plasmatocytes,crystal cells,and putative *** hemocyte counts(THC)are determined,and methods for THC determination are *** 1100 hemocytes per microliter hemolymph are present in naive animals,while hemocyte density decreases dramatically shortly after wounding,indicating a role of hemocytes in response to wounding(and immune response in general).The determination of the relative abundance of each hemocyte type(differential hemocyte count,DHC)revealed that plasmatocytes are highly abundant,whereas prohemocytes and crystal cells make up only a small percentage of the circulating *** are not only the most abundant but also the professional phagocytes in *** rapidly engulf and take up bacteria both in vivo and in vitro,indicating a very potent cellular defense against invading *** bioparticles such as yeasts are also removed from circulation by phagocytosis,but slower than *** is the first analysis of the potent cellular immune response in the black soldier fly,and a first toolbox that helps to identify hemocyte(types)is presented.

Coronary Angiography in Patients with and without STEMI Following Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest

Introduction: Little is known about discrepancies between patients who present with or without STEMI following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Material and Methods: All patients with OHCA who were admitted to our hospital between January 1st 2008 and December 31st 2013 were classified according to their initial laboratory and electrocardiographic findings into STEMI, NSTEMI or no ACS. Results: Overall, 147 patients [32 STEMI (21.8%), 28 NSTEMI (19.0%) and 87 no ACS (59.2%)] were included with a mean age of 63.7 ± 13.3 years;there were 84 men (57.1%) and 63 (42.9%) women. Of these, 63 patients (51.7%) received coronary angiography [29 STEMI (90.6%), 9 NSTEMI (32.1%) and 38 no ACS (43.7%)] showing a high prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) [28 STEMI (96.6%), 9 NSTEMI (100.0%) and 26 no ACS (68.4%)] requiring percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in 52 cases [28 STEMI (96.6%), 8 NSTEMI (88.9%) and 16 no ACS (42.1%)]. Discussion: Coronary angiography immediately after hospital admission is feasible if all are prepared for potential further resuscitation efforts during cardiac catheterization. Primary focus on haemodynamic stabilisation may reduce the rates of coronary angiographies in patients following OHCA. Altogether, our data support the call for immediate coronary angiography in all patients following OHCA irrespective of their initial laboratory or electrocardiographic findings.
