This special issue results from a tribute conference to Ruth Hayhoe,held on may 6,2011 in Toronto,which attracted close to 200 scholars and students from Canada,the United States,Singapore,Japan,and *** one-day academic gathering was truly a celebration of Ruth Hayhoe’s *** Hayhoe is by all measures an accomplished and prolific scholar.A 2004 survey of the most influential scholars in comparative education ranked her among the top 10 most cited comparativists(Cook,Hite,&Epstein,2004).Her publication record is nothing short of breathtaking,including five full-length books(one being a recent co-authored volume),more than 80 journal articles,and 13 edited volumes,among them several special issues of *** a figure of outstanding influence in the field of comparative education,Ruth Hayhoe has over the years nurtured a unique scholarship.

Background:Despite considerable advances in preoperative imaging,up to one-third of patients operatively explored for hepatic colorectal metastases are unexpectedly found to harbor unresectable intrahepatic or extrahepatic ***:The current study is a prospective,blinded study comparing utility of[18F]2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography(18F-FDG-PET)to computed tomography(CT)and CT arterial portography(CTAP)as preoperative ***:The 125 planned subjects were *** seen on FDG-PET alone changed therapy for 23 of 125 patients(18%).FDG-PET confirmed other radiologic findings in 16 cases(13%),for an overall influence on therapy in 39 cases(31%).FDG-PET was the most sensitive diagnostic imaging test for extrahepatic cancer;it was 80-90%sensitive for extrahepatic cancer and 70-90%*** the 28 cases of unresectable disease due to extrahepatic disease,FDG-PET findings solely changed therapies in 16 cases(57%)and influenced therapy in seven other cases(25%).Of the 21 unresectable cases due to extent of intrahepatic disease,FDG-PET did not solely change therapy in ***,FDG-PET had the lowest sensitivity for hepatic sites compared with CT or *** particular,small(m)liver tumors were particularly poorly detected by *** area under the receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve for small tumors was 0.58 and for patients on chemotherapy it was 0.66,a modest improvement over no ***:FDG-PET is an important test for preoperative staging of patients with hepatic colorectal metastases,affecting treatment decisions in nearly one-third of *** high yield is due mainly to detection of extrahepatic *** is therefore recommended in patients with extrahepatic lesions suspected to be disseminated cancer or those with high risk for extrahepatic *** is not a good test for identification of small tumors in the liver.

Introduction: According to the National Health and Nutrition Survey, the Mexican households in 2018 had food insecurity at 55.5% while in 2012 it was 70%. Food insecurity is a global health problem and now with the COVID-19 pandemic, it has increased. Objective: To compare the levels of food and nutritional insecurity in women’s households from two Social Impulse Centers of the Secretary for Human Social Development (SEDESHU) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A comparative and cross-sectional study was carried out in 41 women participating in a nutritional intervention program in two social promotion centers. Food security was measured with the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale (ELCSA), comparing it in a period from January to April 2020: before and during the health contingency. Socio-economic and demographic variables were also measured, as well as access to water during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: Food insecurity levels during the COVID-19 contingency were found to have increased by more than 60% (from 31.7% to 93%);the main risk factors associated with unemployment and access to healthy food. The COVID-19 contingency reflects impacts on households, but because women participated in the nutritional intervention program, it could influence by observing that, at least, the use of food was adequate since apparently food waste was minimal. mil

State-supported programs providing loans and scholarships in exchange for service in under-served areas provide an important source of financial support for medical students while encouraging them to select careers in primary care. The purpose of this research was to seek a better understanding of these often unheralded but important state sources of support, and learn if they have continued to grow in the twenty-first century. Administrative data were obtained on state-supported programs operating in 2008 that provided financial support to students, resident or practicing physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, dentists, and licensed mental healthcare providers in exchange for service in an underserved area. The authors identified numbers, types of state-supported programs, program workforce strength, and features of state programs. In 2008, 75 state programs, operating in 37 states, collectively had 5113 program participants under contract. Loan repayment programs (n = 42, 56%) were the most common type of state-supported programs. Practitioners signed initial contracts in 2008 totaled 1173, with more non-physicians (n = 681, 58%) signing initial contracts than physicians (n = 492, 42%). Additionally, 2803 practitioners were serving in programs in 2008. Field placement was also slightly greater among non-physicians in 2008 (n = 1433, 51%) than physicians (n = 1370, 49%). State support-for-service programs remains an important source of financial assistance for those willing to make service commitments in underserved areas. moreover, these programs continue to increase in size, even amidst the economic malaise, and provide an obligated primary care workforce in underserved areas.

“Obesity is a disease.” This is the declaration by the American medical Association in June, 2013. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of options for patients who meet the criteria of obesity. Primary care nurse practitioners are urged to confront obesity head on, with early, individualized intervention to reduce associated morbidity and mortality. Options for weight loss and maintenance are abundant and often confusing or unattractive to the patient. Working with patients to achieve realistic, reasonable, and patient-tailored goals for weight loss and exercise programs are paramount to achieving a healthy weight and lifestyle.

Eradication of mRSA osteomyelitis requires elimination of distinct *** overcome this,we developed bisphosphonateconjugated sitafloxacin(BCS,BV600072)and hydroxybisphosphonate-conjugate sitafloxacin(HBCS,BV63072),which achieve“target-and-release”drug delivery proximal to the bone infection and have prophylactic efficacy against mRSA static biofilm in vitro and in *** we evaluated their therapeutic efficacy in a murine 1-stage exchange femoral plate model with bioluminescent mRSA(USA300LAC::lux).Osteomyelitis was confirmed by CFU on the explants and longitudinal bioluminescent imaging(BLI)after debridement and implant exchange surgery on day 7,and mice were randomized into seven groups:1)Baseline(harvested at day7,no treatment);2)HPBP(bisphosphonate control for BCS)+vancomycin;3)HPHBP(hydroxybisphosphonate control for HBCS)+vancomycin;4)vancomycin;5)sitafloxacin;6)BCS+vancomycin;and 7)HBCS+*** confirmed infection persisted in all groups except for mice treated with BCS or HBCS+*** revealed catastrophic femur fractures in all groups except mice treated with BCS or HBCS+vancomycin,which also displayed decreases in peri-implant bone loss,osteoclast numbers,and *** confirm this,we assessed the efficacy of vancomycin,sitafloxacin,and HBCS monotherapy in a transtibial implant *** results showed complete lack of vancomycin efficacy while all mice treated with HBCS had evidence of infection control,and some had evidence of osseous integrated septic implants,suggestive of biofilm *** together these studies demonstrate that HBCS adjuvant with standard of care debridement and vancomycin therapy has the potential to eradicate mRSA osteomyelitis.

Agricultural drainage ditches can provide a direct connection between fields and surface waters, and some have been shown to deliver high loads of phosphorus (P) to sensitive water bodies. A potential way to reduce nutrient loads in drainage ditches is to install filter structures containing P sorbing materials (PSms) such as gypsum to remove P from ditch flow. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of land-application of gypsum removed from such filters on soil P forms and concentrations. Gypsum was saturated at two levels on a mass basis of P and applied to two soils of contrasting texture, a silt loam and a sandy loam and applied at both a high and low rate. The treated soils were incubated in the laboratory at 25oC, and samples were collected at 1, 7, and 119 days after initiation. Soil type, time after application, gypsum rate, and P saturation level all had a significant impact on soil P forms and concen-trations. However, it appears that land application of spent filter gypsum at realistic rates would have little effect on soluble P concentrations in amended soils.

AIm： To evaluate the outcomes of （6y ranibizumab therapy in neovascular age-related macular degeneration （AmD）.mETHODS： HELIX was a retrospective, observational effectiveness study using medical records of patients treated in three clinics in Belgium. Patients had neovascular AmD and were initially treated with intravitreal ranibizumab （0.5 mg） between November 1, 2007 and October 31, 2008, had （6y of data available, and were treated on an ongoing, as-needed basis. Outcomes included best-corrected visual acuity （BCVA） and central retinal thickness （CRT）.RESULTS： The sample consisted of 88 eyes from 69 patients. mean age was 76.4±6.5y, most patients were female （62.3%）. most eyes （62.5%） were treatment-naive, 33 previously treated eyes had received predominantly other anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents and verteporfin. mean baseline BCVA was 57.4±12.7 ETDRS letters and CRT was 291.5±86.1 （m. On average, patients received 20.6±11.9 ranibizumab injections over the （6y. Intervals between injections were on average 12.7±16.1wk. mean change in BCVA from baseline to last observation for the sample was less than one letter （-0.9±17.3 letters）, with an average loss of -3.2±15.6 letters in previously treated eyes versus a gain of 0.6±18.4 letters in treatment-na？ve eyes. When considering a loss of 〈15 letters over 6y as stabilization of disease, 75.9% of all eyes showed a positive （improvement or stabilization） outcome. mean change in CRT from baseline to last observation for the sample was -26.9±148.4 （m with the greatest reduction observed in treatment-naive ***： This retrospective study of 69 neovascular AmD patients treated for （6y with ranibizumab demonstrates long-term visual stabilization. In light of the natural evolution of the disease, these data confirm that ranibizumab is effective long-term under real-world conditions of heterogeneity of patients, clinicians, and centers.
