Background:Polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS)is an endocrine disorder that occurs in women of child-bearing ***,PCOS patients have decreased pregnancy rates and clomiphene citrate *** traditional Chinese medicine formula Kun-Tai-1S(KT1S),consisting of the seahorse species hippocampus,has been reported to elicit therapeutic effects in patients with ***,given the limited resources and global demand for wild hippocampus,whether KT1S with or without hippocampus can elicit similar therapeutic effects has not been ***:KT1S and Kun-Tai-1A(KT1A,KT1S without dry hippocampus)were used to treat a letrozole-induced rat model of PCOS with an established *** serum levels of testosterone,luteinizing hormone,anti-Müllerian hormone,and estradiol were determined,the luteinizing hormone/follicle-stimulating hormone ratio was determined,and the ovarian pathology was ***:Similar to the therapeutic effects of cyproterone acetate,both the KT1S and KT1A treatments reduced the body weight and ovarian and uterine indices in the rats with *** serum levels of testosterone,anti-Müllerian hormone,and luteinizing hormone and the luteinizing hormone/follicle-stimulating hormone ratio were significantly lower in the KT1S and KT1A treatment groups compared to the model group(Phological assessment results suggested that both the KT1S and KT1A treatments significantly ameliorated the PCOS pathology in the rats with an established disease,with a reduced number of cystic and atretic follicles and an increased number of corpora lutea being observed in the ***,there was no obvious difference in the disease outcomes between the KT1S and KT1A-treated *** pharmacology analysis revealed that 4’,7-dihydroxyflavanone,sinpemine A,quercetin,8-isopentenyl-kaempferol,and luteolin in KT1A may promote estrogen signaling;furthermore,the nitric oxide regulation pathway is also cl

Disease progression after discontinuation of corticosteroid treatment in a COVID-19 patient with ARDS

Excessive acute inflammatory response in coronavirus-induced disease 2019(COVID-19)patients results in multiple organ injury,especially acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS),contributing to a high mortality of the disease[1,2].More evidence showed that corticosteroid,an immunomodulatory agent,reduces both the need of invasive mechanical ventilation and lowers the mortality of severe COVID-19 ***,its optimal dose and therapeutic duration is still *** RECOVERY trial revealed that using corticosteroid up to 10 days reduced the mortality of hospitalized COVID-19 patients[3]and a finding also upheld by a meta-analysis by Cano et al.[4].To the best of our knowledge,currently,there is no study evaluating disease progression after discontinuation of corticosteroid treatment in COVID-19 patients with ARDS.

Irinotecan therapy and molecular targets in colorectal cancer: A systemic review

Irinotecan is the second line chemotherapy for advanced stage colorectal cancer (CRC) after failure of first line chemotherapy with oxaliplatin and 5-fluorouracil. The aim of this review is to analyse the data on irinotecan as second line chemotherapy for advanced CRC and the potential roles of the molecular markers, p53 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the management of advanced CRC. Thus, the English literature from 1980 to 2008 concerning irinotecan, p53, VEGF and CRC was reviewed. On review, Phase and clinical trials showed thatirinotecan improves pain-free survival, quality of life, 1-year survival, progression-free survival and overall survival in advanced CRC. p53 and VEGF were expressed in CRC and had a predictive power of aggressive clinical behaviour in CRC. Irinotecan sensitizes p53 wild type, mutant and null cells to Fasmediated cell apoptosis in CRC cells. Wild type p53 cells were more sensitive to irinotecan than mutated p53. Irinotecan has an anti-VEGF effect inhibiting endothelial cell proliferation, increasing apoptosis and reducing microvascular density which is onlylimited by irinotecan toxicity levels. To conclude, irinotecan improves the patient's quality of life and the survival rates of patients with advanced CRC. p53 and VEGF status of the patients' tumour is likely to affect the responsiveness of CRC to irinotecan. It is recommended that studies of the expression of these molecular markers in relation to chemoresponsiveness ofirinotecan should be carried out for better management of patients with advanced CRC.

A review of image processing and quantification analysis for solid oxide fuel cell

The purpose of this study is to investigate the approaches applied to analyze solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) microstructural properties. Both manual and automated image processing approaches applied on SOFC microstructural images which are obtained from several types of tomography such as dual-beam focused ion beam with scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) and others are discussed. In fact, to achieve a realistic and accurate SOFC microstructural properties, such as average diameter, volume fraction, triple phase boundary (TPB), area interface density and tortuosity factor, the approaches of image processing and quantification are crucial for a reliable image generation for quantification purposes. The microstructural properties are optimized to improve SOFC electrode performance. Therefore, the image processing and quantification approaches are outlined and reviewed. Despite the automated image processing and quantification algorithms significantly outperform manual image processing and quantification approaches in terms of computing speed when evaluating and measuring microstructural properties, the efficiency and productivity are still extremely taken into concern. As a result, image processing and quantification approaches are concluded and presented respectively in this paper.

Mortality in relation to changes in physical activity in middle-aged to older Chinese:An 8-year follow-up of the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study

AIM： To investigate the effect of Scutellariae Radix extract （SRE） on ulcerative colitis （UC） in rats induced by dextran-sulfate sodium （DSS）. METhoDS： Colitis was induced in male Sprague-Dawley （SD） rats （170-180 g） by 4% dextran sulfate sodium （DSS, wt/v, MW 54000） in drinking water for 8 d. The treated rats received 4% DSS and SRE orally （100 mg/kg per day）. Control rats received either tap water or SRE only. Macroscopic assessment which included body weight changes, fecal occult blood and stool consistency were determined daily. At the appointed time, the rats were sacrificed and the entire colons were removed. The colon length and the myeloperoxidase （MPO） activity were measured. The severity of colitis was graded by morphological and histological assessments. The ion transport activity of the colonic mucosa was assessed by electrophysiological technique. RESULTS： Rats treated with oral administration of 4% DSS regularly developed clinical and macroscopic signs of colitis. Treatment with SRE relieved the symptoms, including the reduction in body weight, shortening 2nd ulceration of the colon. Administration of SRE also significantly reduced the histological damage induced by DSS. Moreover, the Isc responses of the colonic mucosa to forskolin, were suppressed after the induction of colitis. The stimulated ion transport activity of DSS-rats treated with SRE displayed significant improvement in the secretory responsiveness. CONCLUSION： SRE was effective in treating acute DSS- induced ulcerative colitis, as gauged by reduced clinical disease, improved macroscopic and histological damage scores, and enhanced recovery of normal colonic secretory function.
