Anterolateral rotatory instability in vivo correlates tunnel position after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using bone-patellar tendon-bone graft

AIM To quantitatively assess rotatory and anterior-posterior instability in vivo after anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) reconstruction using bone-patellar tendon-bone(BTB) autografts, and to clarify the influence of tunnel positions on the knee *** Single-bundle ACL reconstruction with BTB autograft was performed on 50 patients with a mean age of 28 years using the trans-tibial(TT)(n = 20) and trans-portal(TP)(n = 30) techniques. Femoral and tibial tunnel positions were identified from the high-resolution 3 D-CT bone models two weeks after surgery. Anterolateral rotatory translation was examined using a Slocum anterolateral rotatory instability test in open magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) 1.0-1.5 years after surgery, by measuring anterior tibial translation at the medial and lateral compartments on its sagittal images. Anterior-posterior stability was evaluated with a Kneelax3 *** A total of 40 patients(80%) were finally followed up. Femoral tunnel positions were shallower(P < 0.01) and higher(P < 0.001), and tibial tunnel positions were more posterior(P < 0.05) in the TT group compared with the TP group. Anterolateral rotatory translations in reconstructed knees were significantly correlated with the shallow femoral tunnel positions(R = 0.42, P < 0.01), and the rotatory translations were greater in the TT group(3.2 ± 1.6 mm) than in the TP group(2.0 ± 1.8 mm)(P < 0.05). Side-to-side differences of Kneelax3 arthrometer were 1.5 ± 1.3 mm in the TT, and 1.7 ± 1.6 mm in the TP group(N.S.). The isotropy or anisotropy in some physical properties of the amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) films uniaxially drawn at temperatures above its T-g and then quenched to room temperature have been studied. Experimental results here presented show that this amorphous state of high global chain orientation but nearly random segmental orientation, the GOLR state, is nearly isotropic in refractive indices and Young's modulus for small deformation, while it is very probably anisotropic in thermal conduction and microwave dielectric properties.

TNF Type-I Receptor Inhibitor, R-7050 Attenuates Acute Kidney Injury in a Mouse Model of Crush Syndrome

Crush syndrome (CS) is caused by severe and extensive muscular skeletal damages, and acute kidney injury (AKI) with hyperkalemia is one of the most lethal factors of this syndrome. Especially under natural disasters of earthquake, many persons die due to AKI and hyperkalemia-induced cardiac arrest, but there has been no pathogenesis-based drugs for preventing CS-induced AKI. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-6, play a critical role for induction of AKI during CS development. Glycerol-injected mice are used as an experimental tool for reflecting pathological events of human CS. Using this popular model, we provide evidence to show that TNF type-I receptor (TNFR1) inhibitor, R-7050 significantly attenuates the onset of AKI after the muscular destruction. In this process, R-7050 treatment suppressed the NF-κB activation in the affected kidney, and this was associated with a decrease in blood IL-6, a downstream target of NF-κB. As a result, renal tubular apoptosis became milder in the R-7050-treated CS mice. These findings suggest that induction of IL-6 via sequential events of TNF-α à TNFR1 à NF-κB is contributable for renal tubular apoptosis, a histological hallmark of AKI. Thus, TNFR1-selective inhibition can be a pharmacological strategy to attenuate the onset of AKI immediately after the clinical manifestation of rhabdomyolysis.

Synthesis and Conductivity Characterization of Anti-Perovskite Na₃OX Solid Electrolytes for All Solid Na-Ion Batteries

Solid electrolytes for all solid sodium-ion batteries have been attracting much attention as an alternative energy storage system, which have the advantage of being extremely safe because it can be charged quickly and is nonflammable. We have synthesized anti-perovskite type Na3OX (X = Br, and I) electrolytes with high purity, by reactions of halogen mixtures with sodium oxides. After mixing, it was filled in an alumina crucible and heated for 6 hours at 330°C. It was confirmed that a large crystal strain was introduced by eutectication, which might reduce the activation energy of Na ion conduction and lead to an improvement of the conductivity. A relatively higher ionic conductivity of σ = 1.55 × 10-7 S/cm at 60°C has been obtained for Na3OBr0.6I0.4, which is about three orders higher than that in literature. A different ratio of X (X = Br, I) ions was added into sodium oxide to make the Na3OX crystal. The influence of strain introduction on optimizing the bottleneck and improving the conductivity was discussed.
