A number of studies have investigated peripheral inflammatory indices, including plasma cytokines and related molecules according to subtypes of dementia, but not in mild cognitive impairment （MCI）. In this study, we used multiplex cytokine assay to assess the plasma levels of 22 cytokines in patients with MCI subtyped as amnestic and non-amnestic, according to cognitive features. When comparing the levels of plasma growth factors, chemokines and cytokines, plasma levels of monocyte chemotactic protein 3 （MCP-3）, and beta-nerve growth factor （β-NGF） in these two groups, they were found to be significantly higher in amnestic MCI patients than in non-amnestic MCI patients, after adjusting for age and gender. This suggests that plasma MCP-3 and β-NGF may be useful in differentiating subtypes of MCI.

A new structure for efficient and cost-effective L-band amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) generation was experimentally investigated and demonstrated using a C/L-band coupler, an optical mirror, and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The proposed structure has about 1.5 dB increase of the power around 1570 nm compared with conventional one. Various structures for power enhancement were also considered.

AIM： Portal hypertension is a common complication of liver cirrhosis. Intrahepatic pressure can be elevated in several ways. Abnormal architecture affecting the vasculature, an increase in vasoconstrictors and increased circulation from the splanchnic viscera into the portal system may all contribute. It follows that endogenous vasodilators may be able to alleviate the hypertension. We therefore aimed to investigate the levels of endogenous vasodilators, nitric oxide （NO） and carbon monoxide （CO） through the expression of nitric oxide synthase （NOS） and heme oxygenase （HO）. METHOD： Cirrhotic （n = 20） and non-cirrhotic （n = 20） livers were obtained from patients who had undergone surgery. The mRNA and protein expressions of the various isoforms of NOS and HO were examined using competitive PCR, Western Blot and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS： There was no significant change in either inducible NOS （iNOS） or neuronal NOS （nNOS） expressions while endothelial NOS （eNOS） was up- regulated in cirrhotic livers. Concomitantly, caveolin-1, an established down-regulator of eNOS, was upregulated. Inducible HO-1 and constitutive HO-2 were found to show increased expression in cirrhotic livers albeit in different Iocalizations. CONCLUSION： The differences of NOS expression might be due to their differing roles in maintaining liver homeostasis and/or involvement in the pathology of cirrhosis. Sheer stress within the hypertensive liver may induce increased expression of eNOS. In turn, caveolin-1 is also increased. Whether this serves as a defense mechanism against further cirrhosis or is a consequence of cirrhosis, is yet unknown. The elevated expression of HO-1 and HO-2 suggest that CO may compensate in its role as a vasodilator albeit weakly. It is possible that CO and NO have parallel or coordinated functions within the liver and may work antagonistically in the pathophysiology of portal hypertension.

Prediction of performance and evaluation of flexible pavement rehabilitation strategies

Five test sections with different additives and strategies were established to rehabilitate a State-maintained highway more effectively in Rhode Island （RI）： control, calcium chloride, asphalt emulsion, Portland cement and geogrid. Resilient moduli of subgrade soils and subbase materials before and after full depth rehabilitation were employed as input pa- rameters to predict the performance of pavement structures using AASHTOWare Pave- ment ME Design （Pavement ME） software in terms of rutting, cracking and roughness. It was attempted to use Level i input （which includes traffic full spectrum data, climate data and structural layer properties） for Pavement ME. Traffic data was obtained from a Weigh- in-Motion （WIM} instrument and Providence station was used for collecting climatic data. Volumetric properties, dynamic modulus and creep compliance were used as input pa- rameters for 19 mm （0.75 in.} warm mix asphalt （WMA） base and 12.S mm （0.5 in.） WMA surface layer. The results indicated that all test sections observed AC top-down （longitu- dinal） cracking except Portland cement section which passed for all criteria. The order in terms of performance （best to worst） for all test sections by Pavement ME was Portland cement, calcium chloride, control, geogrid, and asphalt emulsion. It was also observed that all test sections passed for both bottom up and top down fatigue cracking by increasing thickness of either of the two top asphalt layers. Test sections with five different base/ subbase materials were evaluated in last two years through visual condition survey and measurements of deflection and roughness to confirm the prediction, but there was no serious distress and roughness. Thus these experiments allowed selecting the best reha- bilitation/reconstruction techniques for the particular and/or similar highway, and a framework was formulated to select an optimal technique and/or strategy for future rehabilitation/reconstruction projects. Evaluation of non-ampullary duodenal polyps: Comparison of non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions

AIM: To evaluate duodenal polyps, divided into nonneoplastic and neoplastic lesions. In addition, the clinical characteristics of duodenal hyperplastic polyps are determined. METHODS: We analyzed medical records of 50 114 consecutive patients submitted to for first diagnostic esophago-gastroduodenoscopy between January 2004 and December 2009. We excluded lesions on the ampulla of Vater and submucosal tumors. We studied 510 cases that were diagnosed endoscopically with duodenal polyps and enrolled a total of 221 cases that had undergone tissue biopsy. We analyzed the differences between non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions, and determined the clinical features of duodenal hyperplastic polyps. RESULTS: Non-neoplastic lesions were found in 196 patients and neoplastic lesions in 25 patients. On uni-variate analysis, there were significant differences in shape, location, and size. Polyps more than 10 mm in diameter or polyps in the second portion had independent risk factors for being neoplastic lesions, as identified by multivariate analysis. In 23 cases of hyperplastic polyps (79.3%), they were accompanied by gastroduodenal pathology, which was possibly associated with Helicobacter pylori . CONCLUSION: Polyps of more than 10 mm or polyps in the second portion of the duodenum should be evaluated by histological examination.

Objective:To investigate the effects of Korean Magnolia obovata crude extract(KME)on plateletderived growth factor(PDGF)-BB-induced proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells(VSMCs).Methods:KME composition was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).VSMCs were isolated from the aorta of a Sprague-Dawley rat,incubated in serum free-Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium in the presence or absence of KME(10,30,100,and 300(xg/mL),then further treated with PDGF-BB(10 ng/mL).VSMC proliferation was detected using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay and VSMC migration was determined using the Boyden chamber and scratch wound healing *** blot analysis was used to detect phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases 1 and 2(p-ERK1/2),protein kinase B(p-Akt),and stress-activated protein kinase/c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase(p-SAPK/JNK).The antimigration and proliferation effects of KME were tested using aortic sprout ***:The HPLC analysis identified honokiol(0.45 mg/g)and magnolol(0.34 mg/g)as the major components of ***(30,100,and 300μg/m L)significantly decreased the proliferation and migration of PDGF-BB-stimulated(10 ng/mL)VSMCs and the PDGF-BB-induced phosphorylation of EKR1/2,Akt,and SAPK/JNK(P<0.05).Furthermore,PDGF-BBinduced VSMCs treated with 300μg/m L of KME showed reduction in aortic sprout ***:KME could inhibit abnormal proliferation and migration of VSMCs by down-regulating the phosphorylation of EKR1/2 and ***,KME might be a functional food for preventing vascular disorders.

The trend towards affordable, green housing highlights the need for a Green Affordable Housing (GAH) model that produces durable dwellings that are not significantly more expensive to build, cheaper to operate, healthier for their occupants, and more environmentally sound. The model should also reduce the risk of poverty for those with low and moderate incomes, be close to public transportation, and support a neighborhood that is healthy, walkable and connected to the broader community and natural environment. This case study utilized detailed interviews with occupants, town officials, a developer, and a design builder to explore how green building strategies could be applied in real-world communities with the help of a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and contributions from other funding bodies. Focusing on the Roanoke and lee Street housing project in Blacksburg, Virginia (VA), this study demonstrated how green building strategies can be integrated into affordable housing with help from public programs and incentives to provide houses that are more durable, no more expensive to build, cheaper to operate, healthier, more environmentally sound and less risky for their occupants. The new framework includes ways to deal with neighborhood issues such as the deterioration of housing stock and infrastructure to support the creation of a vital and healthy neighborhood with improved public services and community spirit, as well as providing an integrated design process framework that enables stakeholders to work together to achieve the goal of building green and affordable housing.
