A Three-Dimensional Numerical Model for Predicting the Weld Bead Geometry Characteristics in Laser Overlap Welding of Low Carbon Galvanized Steel

Laser welding (LW) becomes one of the most economical high quality joining processes. LW offers the advantage of very controlled heat input resulting in low distortion and the ability to weld heat sensitive components. To exploit efficiently the benefits presented by LW, it is necessary to develop an integrated approach to identify and control the welding process variables in order to produce the desired weld characteristics without being forced to use the traditional and fastidious trial and error procedures. The paper presents a study of weld bead geometry characteristics prediction for laser overlap welding of low carbon galvanized steel using 3D numerical modelling and experimental validation. The temperature dependent material properties, metallurgical transformations and enthalpy method constitute the foundation of the proposed modelling approach. An adaptive 3D heat source is adopted to simulate both keyhole and conduction mode of the LW process. The simulations are performed using 3D finite element model on commercial software. The model is used to estimate the weld bead geometry characteristics for various LW parameters, such as laser power, welding speed and laser beam diameter. The calibration and validation of the 3D numerical model are based on experimental data achieved using a 3 kW Nd:Yag laser system, a structured experimental design and confirmed statistical analysis tools. The results reveal that the modelling approach can provide not only a consistent and accurate prediction of the weld characteristics under variable welding parameters and conditions but also a comprehensive and quantitative analysis of process parameters effects on the weld quality. The results show great concordance between predicted and measured values for weld bead geometry characteristics, such as depth of penetration, bead width at the top surface and bead width at the interface between sheets, with an average accuracy greater than 95%.

A Study on Prediction of Weld Geometry in Laser Overlap Welding of Low Carbon Galvanized Steel Using ANN-Based Models

Predictive modelling for quality analysis becomes one of the most critical requirements for a continuous improvement of reliability, efficiency and safety of laser welding process. Accurate and effective model to perform non-destructive quality estimation is an essential part of this assessment. This paper presents a structured approach developed to design an effective artificial neural network based model for predicting the weld bead dimensional characteristic in laser overlap welding of low carbon galvanized steel. The modelling approach is based on the analysis of direct and interaction effects of laser welding parameters such as laser power, welding speed, laser beam diameter and gap on weld bead dimensional characteristics such as depth of penetration, width at top surface and width at interface. The data used in this analysis was derived from structured experimental investigations according to Taguchi method and exhaustive FEM based 3D modelling and simulation efforts. Using a factorial design, different neural network based prediction models were developed, implemented and evaluated. The models were trained and tested using experimental data, supported with the data generated by the 3D simulation. Hold-out test and k-fold cross validation combined to various statistical tools were used to evaluate the influence of the laser welding parameters on the performances of the models. The results demonstrated that the proposed approach resulted successfully in a consistent model providing accurate and reliable predictions of weld bead dimensional characteristics under variable welding conditions. The best model presents prediction errors lower than 7% for the three weld quality characteristics.

Multi-Technique Characterization and Conservation of an Ancient Egyptian Fabric from King Khufu First Solar Ship

Textiles are among the most fragile artefacts in the world. They are difficult to preserve even in the best circumstances. Herein, we studied an artefacts fabric of a special nature in terms of usage. Despite the multiple applications of textiles, the piece understudy is one of the unique pieces that the ancient Egyptian used as fenders for King Khufu’s first solar boat, the second-largest discovery in Egypt history. The boat was discovered inside a limestone pit. It was disassembled and arranged in several layers. Four pillows of wrapped fabric were found in the first layer, which was used as boat fenders. This use is a great discovery of the role of textiles in the manufacture of ancient boats. Thus, we conducted tests and analytical studies of those fenders using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an optical microscope to identify the type and nature of fibers, spinning method, and aspects of damage. Both energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and infrared analysis (FT-IR) were employed to explore the sample’s elemental content and study the functional groups of the fabric. These analytical processes were useful in carrying out the restoration and preservation work necessary for the artefact under study.

Sequential Combination Diuretic-Therapy for Massive Fluid Overload in Furosemide-Refractory Patients with Diabetic Kidney Disease

Patients with renal disease are at risk of fluid overload which escalates as the disease progresses. In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy of sequential combination diuretic-therapy (SCDT) in management of massive fluid overload in Furosemide-refractory renal patients. The added diuretics were Spironolactone 25 mg daily for 3 days, to those without risk of hyperkalemia, followed by Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg/Metolazone 5 mg daily for 3 more days. Excluded patients were those with 1) acute renal disease, 2) echocardiographic evidence of: a) left ventricular ejection fraction < 40%, b) significant stenotic or incompetent valvular disease, c) ASD or VSD, d) significant pericardial disease, and 3) significant limb venous disease or on drugs likely to cause limb-oedema. To assess the extent of fluid overload;clinical examination was complemented with radiological imaging as well as echocardiographic measurement of systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (sPAP). SCDT led to significant symptomatic, clinical, and radiological improvement of fluid overload without significant side effects. The latter were limited to hyperkalemia and hyponatremia which improved with dietary compliance. Moreover, hyperkalemia improved after subsequent addition of Thiazide/Metolazone. SCDT led to significant (p < 0.001) increase in fractional excretion of sodium and decrease in body weight and sPAP. In conclusion;SCDT is a safe and efficacious measure to control fluid overload in patients with renal diseases.

Objective:To determine the morphological and molecular characterization of Acanthamoeba isolates from contact lens paraphernalia in Malaysia and to investigate their pathogenic potential based on the physiological ***:One hundred and eighty contact lens wearers donated their contact lens,lens storage cases and lens solutions between2018 and *** samples were inoculated onto 1.5%nonnutrient agar plates for 14 *** chain reaction(PCR)was performed and the amplified PCR products were sequenced and compared with the published sequences in *** pathogenic potential of positive isolates was further tested using temperature-tolerance and osmo-tolerance *** species were categorized into three distinct morphological groups established by Pussard and ***:Acanthamoeba was successfully isolated from 14(7.8%)culture-positive samples in which 11 belong to morphological groupⅡand 3 belong to morphological groupⅢ,*** sequencing of 18 S ribosomal RNA gene led to the identification of the T4 genotype in all the isolated *** vitro assays revealed that 9(64.3%)Acanthamoeba isolates were able to grow at 42℃and 1 M mannitol and were thus considered to be highly ***:To the best of our knowledge,this is the first report identifying the Acanthamoeba genotype and their pathogenic potential among contact lens wearers in *** potentially pathogenic T4 genotype isolated in this study is the most predominant genotype responsible for human ocular infection ***,increasing attention should be aimed at the prevention of contamination by Acanthamoeba and the disinfection of contact lens paraphernalia.
