Inter-observer variability in histopathological assessment of liver biopsies taken in a pediatric open label therapeutic program for chronic HBV infection treatment

AIM： To our knowledge, the inter-observer variability of the liver biopsy findings in HBV-infected children have not been studied as yet. Hence, we aimed to compare different pathologist＇s assessment of grading and staging in liver biopsies obtained from children prior to interferon treatment. METHODS： We collected 920 biopsies from 11 medical centers. The biopsies were independently reviewed by 6 pathologists from academic centers who assessed Batts-ludwig score for grading and staging. Satisfactory agreement among observers was defined as at least 60% of observers having the same opinion. Satisfactory dispersion between maximal and minimal score for the same biopsy specimen was defined as a maximum 1 point. RESUlTS： Satisfactory inter-observer agreement for grading was obtained in 51.6% and for staging in 75.7% of biopsies. Satisfactory dispersion for grading scores was observed in 44.5% and for staging in 72.7% of cases. CONClUSION： Our study demonstrates that：（1） pathologists differ in their assessment of grading and staging of liver biopsies; （2） inter-observer variability for staging is lower than that for grading; and （3） regardless of the inter-observer variability of assessments, the majority of children with chronic HBV infection have mild to moderate inflammation and mild to moderate fibrosis.

Nutrition, Metabolic Status and Reproductive Efficiency in Dairy Herds

Nutrition of transition period in dairy cows dramatically increases requirements for energy, glucose, amino acids and other nutrients in dairy cows and, parallel to that, feed intake is depressed. An insufficient or imbalanced nutrient intake might lead to the malfunction of organs, causing reproductive failure. To minimize the metabolic/reproductive damage caused by negative energy balance (NEBAl), feeding of a glucogenic and lipogenic diet containing fat-enriched supplements is recommended. In heat-stressed dairy cows, the reduction of dry matter intake causes an energy deficit, thereby accentuating NEBAl. Heat stress may also have a direct impact on oocyte quality due to the high ovarian temperatures. The intrauterine environment is also compromised in heat-stressed cows, with reduced blood flow to the uterus and increased uterine temperature;this may impair embryonic development, increase early embryonic loss and reduce the proportion of successful inseminations. Postpartum NEBAl suppresses immune function and promotes metabolic disorders, potentially explaining relationships between infectious and noninfectious transition disorders. In postpartum dairy cows, pathologic ovarian phenomena including ovulatory (cystic corpora lutea) and non-ovulatory (follicular and luteal cysts) forms frequently occur causing decreased fertility. The main objective of this review was summarizing the most relevant information regarding nutrition and reproduction in dairy cows.

Profiles and removal efficiency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by two different types of sewage treatment plants in Hong Kong

Sewage discharge could be a major source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in the coastal waters. Stonecutters Island and Shatin Sewage Treatment Works （SCISTW and STSTW） in Hong Kong, adopted chemically enhanced primary treatment and biological treatment, respectively. This study aimed at （1） determining the removal efficiencies of PAHs, （2） comparing the capabilities in removing PAHs, and （3） characterizing the profile of each individual PAHs, in the two sewage treatment plants （STPs）. Quantification of 16 PAHs was conducted by a Gas Chromatography. The concentrations of total PAHs decreased gradually along the treatment processes （from 301 ± 255 and 307 ± 217 ns/l to 14.9 ± 12.1 and 63.3 ± 54.1 ng/l in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively）. It was noted that STSTW was more capable in removing total PAHs than SCISTW with average total removal effidency 94.4% ± 4.12% us. 79.2% ± 7.48% （p 〈 0.05）. The removal of PAHs was probably due to sorption in particular matter, confirmed by the higher distribution coefficient of individual and total PAHs in solid samples （dewatered sludge contained 92.5% and 74.7% of total PAHs in SCISTW and STSTW, respectively） than liquid samples （final efffluent-total contained 7.53% and 25.3% of total PAHs in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively）. Despite the impressive capability of STSTW and SCISTW in removing PAHs, there was still a considerable amount of total PAHs （1.85 and 39.3 ks/year, respectively for the two STPs） being discharged into Hone Kon coastal waters, which would be an environmental concern.

Mesoporous bioactive glasses have been widely investigated for applications in bone tissue regeneration and,more recently,in soft tissue repair and wound *** this study we produced mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles(MBGNs)based on the SiO2-CaO *** the intention of adding subsidiary biological function,MBGNs were doped with Zn2+***-MBGNs with 8 mol%ZnO content were synthesized via microemulsion assisted sol-gel *** synthesized particles were homogeneous in shape and *** exhibited spherical shape,good dispersity,and a size of 130±10 *** addition of zinc precursors did not affect the morphology of particles,while their specific surface area increased in comparison to *** presence of Zn2+ions inhibited the formation of hydroxycarbonate apatite(HCAp)on the particles after immersion in simulated body fluid(SBF).No formation of HCAp crystals on the surface of Zn-MBGNs could be observed after 14 days of ***,powders containing relatively high amount of zinc released Zn2+ions in low concentration(0.6-1.2 mg l^−1)but in a sustained *** releasing feature enables Zn-MBGNs to avoid potentially toxic levels of Zn2+ions,indeed Zn-MBGNs were seen to improve the differentiation of osteoblast-like cells(MG-63).Additionally,Zn-MBGNs showed higher ability to adsorb proteins in comparison to MBGNs,which could indicate a favourable later attachment of *** to their advantageous morphological and physiochemical properties,Zn-MBGNs show great potential as bioactive fillers or drug delivery systems in a variety of applications including bone regeneration and wound healing.

Screening Research of Pharmaceutical Compositions Based on Succinic Acid, Ascorbic Acid and Rutin

We conduct research on the development of new medicines based on succinic acid, ascorbic acid and rutin. We studied the anti-inflammatory action （exudative inflammation, model of carrageenan-induced paw edema of rats）, the hepatoprotective （injury of rats with carbon tetrachloride） and renal protectie action. In the study, the anti-inflammatory activity of our medicines （exudative inflammation, karahenin model of inflammatory edema of paws rats） is set to ability of suppression of the inflammatory response by 24.4 %. Against the background, the action of carbon tetrachloride observed a positive effect on cholesterol- and pigment- forming liver function. Reducing the activity of enzymes AlT （alanine transaminase） and AST （aspartate transaminase） in groups of animals, which treated with our medication, talks about their ability to recover morpho functional integrity of the membranes of hepatocytes and warn of changes in the liver damage with carbon tetrachloride. Renal protective action screening study found that investigated mixture capable of increasingly lower level of creatinine in the blood of rats： 27.27-39.18 mmol/l in lespeflan. Similarly, the concentration of urea in the smaller of the studied using mixtures is 5.18 mmol/l, while the application lespeflanu urea concentration slightly higher is 6.78 mmol/l. This shows that hypoazotemic effect is traced compared with the control group, and better than the comparator lespeflan. Study of acute toxicity showed that the investigated mixture refers to practically nontoxic drugs. It is confirmed the need for further studies on the pharmacological activity of our facility to determine the effect on capillaries and the immune system, and as a result, prevention and treatment of influenza and ARI （acute respiratory infections）.

Highly active antiretroviral therapy per se decreased mortality and morbidity of advanced human immunodeficiency virus disease in Hong Kong

Background Morbidity and mortality of advanced human immunodeficiency virus infection （HIV） have declined in Western industrialized countries since the availability of highly active antiretroviral therapy （HAART）. It is unclear if this has also happened in Hong Kong. Methods We studied a retrospective cohort of patients with advanced HIV disease in Hong Kong, China. First, the mortality of advanced HIV disease per year was calculated for the decade 1993 to 2002, both annually and according to patient observation before and after 1997. Second, the event rates were estimated for the clinical end points of acquired immune deficiency syndrome （AIDS） and death. Univariate and multivariate analyses were then performed to identify associated factors. Results The crude mortality of advanced HIV disease declined from 10. 8 - 30. 4 per 100 patients during 1993 - 1996, to 0. 8 - 6. 9 per 100 patients during 1997 - 2002. A rate ratio of 4. 04 （95% CI, 2. 52 - 6. 47） was evident for those observed in 1993 - 1996, compared to those in 1997 - 2002. In a multivariate analysis where calendar period was adjusted, use of＇highly active antiretroviral therapy was associated with rate ratios of 0. 13 （95% CI, 0. 05 -0. 33） for death after AIDS, 0. 08 （95% CI, 0. 04 -0. 19） for AIDS after a CD4 cell count 〈200/μ1, and 0.21 （95% CI, 0.07 -0.67） for death after CD4 cell count 〈200/μl. In the same analysis, calendar period ceased to be a significant factor after adjustment for use of HAART. Conclusions The mortality and morbidity of advanced human immunodeficiency virus disease have declined in Hong Kong. This improved prognosis was attributable to the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy.

文章采用基于数据包络分析的Malmquist指数方法,以2000—2015年30个省份饮料制造业的平衡面板数据为研究对象,研究中国饮料制造业的全要素生产率(TFP)变动趋势以及收敛性问题。结果表明:中国饮料制造业TFP提高的动力源泉为技术进步;中国及三大区域的饮料制造业TFP增长率呈现出“倒U型”态势,中部和西部地区饮料制造业的TFP增长率显著地高于全国的平均水平,而东部地区饮料制造业的TFP增长率显著地低于全国平均水平;全国饮料制造业TFP增长呈现出不显著的绝对收敛及显著的条件收敛特征,而三个区域的饮料制造业TFP增长呈现出显著的条件收敛特征。

Entomopathogenic fungi isolated from Yukon soil against unfed larvae of the winter tick,Dermacentor albipictus

Fungal composition of Yukon soil samples consisted of 29 soil saprobes common to acidified forest,subarctic *** of the fungi identified are psychrotrophs,capable of growth at both 4℃ and 20℃.Of these,a total of 17 fungi were found to be entomopathogenic by winter tick(Dermacentor albipictus)larval bioassays:Aspergillus flavus,Beauveria,namely ***,Mucor,Paecilomyces yielded>~70%larval mortality and the remainder,mostly Mortierella and Penicillium,averaged~40%larval *** where elk(Cervus elaphus canadensis)are observed had an overall greater quantity,and diversity of entomopathogenic soil fungi than sites where elk are not *** diversity of fungi at elk-inhabited sites is likely a product of warmer soil microclimate(hillsides where elk are seen,lose snow earlier than other areas),animal presence,and increased nutrient *** conclude that Yukon soils contain fungi that naturally regulate populations of *** fungi are archived at the Wittenberg University Fungus Collection,Springfield,OH,USA.
