Recovery of silica from sodium silicate solution of calcined boron mud

The effect of several parameters on the recovery of silicon dioxide from calcined boron mud（CBM）such as stirring speed, temperature, sodium silicate concentration, and carbonation time was studied. The recovery of silicon dioxide is 88 % when the stirring speed is450 r min-1, temperature is 60 °C, sodium silicate concentration is 1 mol l-1, and the carbonation time is 6 *** effect of carbonation time on the recovery of silicon dioxide is divided into three kinetic regimes, and the carbonation process of sodium silicate solution follows a second-order reaction based on the double-film theory model. The apparent rate constant of the three kinetic regimes is 0.064, 3.178, and 1.130 l h mol-1, *** amorphous SiO_2 products obtained by carbonating the purified solution have 99.6 % purity and are spherical with diameters of about 100 nm.

Highly active antiretroviral therapy per se decreased mortality and morbidity of advanced human immunodeficiency virus disease in Hong Kong

Background Morbidity and mortality of advanced human immunodeficiency virus infection （HIV） have declined in Western industrialized countries since the availability of highly active antiretroviral therapy （HAART）. It is unclear if this has also happened in Hong Kong. Methods We studied a retrospective cohort of patients with advanced HIV disease in Hong Kong, China. First, the mortality of advanced HIV disease per year was calculated for the decade 1993 to 2002, both annually and according to patient observation before and after 1997. Second, the event rates were estimated for the clinical end points of acquired immune deficiency syndrome （AIDS） and death. Univariate and multivariate analyses were then performed to identify associated factors. Results The crude mortality of advanced HIV disease declined from 10. 8 - 30. 4 per 100 patients during 1993 - 1996, to 0. 8 - 6. 9 per 100 patients during 1997 - 2002. A rate ratio of 4. 04 （95% CI, 2. 52 - 6. 47） was evident for those observed in 1993 - 1996, compared to those in 1997 - 2002. In a multivariate analysis where calendar period was adjusted, use of＇highly active antiretroviral therapy was associated with rate ratios of 0. 13 （95% CI, 0. 05 -0. 33） for death after AIDS, 0. 08 （95% CI, 0. 04 -0. 19） for AIDS after a CD4 cell count 〈200/μ1, and 0.21 （95% CI, 0.07 -0.67） for death after CD4 cell count 〈200/μl. In the same analysis, calendar period ceased to be a significant factor after adjustment for use of HAART. Conclusions The mortality and morbidity of advanced human immunodeficiency virus disease have declined in Hong Kong. This improved prognosis was attributable to the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy.

Accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition in the evaluation of lymph nodes enlargement in the absence of on-site pathologist

AIM To evaluate factors that influence the diagnostic accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)-guided tissue acquisition for lymph node enlargement in the absence of an on-site pathologist. METHODS A retrospective analysis of patients who underwent EUS-guided tissue acquisition for the pathological diagnosis of lymph node enlargement between April2012 and June 2015 is reported. Tissue acquisition was performed with both cytology and biopsy needles of different calibers. The variables evaluated were lymph node location and size, number of passes and type of needle used. Final diagnosis was based on surgical histopathology or, in non-operated cases, on EUSguided tissue acquisition and imaging assessment with a minimum clinical follow-up of 6 mo. RESUlTS During the study period, 168 lymph nodes with a median size of 20.3 mm(range 12.5-27) were sampled from 152 patients. Ninety lymph nodes(53.6%) were located at mediastinum, and 105(62.5%) were acquired with biopsy needles. The final diagnosis was benign/reactive origin in 87 cases(51.8%), malignant in 65 cases(38.7%), and lymphoma in 16 cases(9.5%). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value for the detection of malignancy were 74.1%, 100%, 100% and 80.6%, respectively. The overall accuracy was 87.5%(95%CI: 81.7-91.7). No variables were independently associated with a correct final diagnosis according to the multivariate analysis. CONClUSION EUS-guided tissue acquisition is a highly accurate technique for assessing lymph node enlargement. None of the variables evaluated were associated with diagnostic accuracy.

Basal internode elongation of rice as affected by light intensity and leaf area

Incidental Finding of a Fenestrated Vertebrobasilar Junction Aneurysm

Basilar artery fenestration is a rare anatomical variation resulting from the failed fusion of the two vertebral arteries during embryonic life. In order of frequency, it is the second most common location of vascular fenestrations after the anterior communicating artery. Vertebrobasilar junction aneurysms are uncommon but often associated with basilar artery fenestration. We report the case of a fenestrated vertebrobasilar junction saccular aneurysm in a 57-year-old woman. The diagnosis was incidentally made on CT angiography which found the anatomical variant and the aneurysm. The radiological features illustrating this association are detailed here and a brief discussion of its pathogenesis and management was made. Vertebrobasilar junction aneurysms are rare and their presence should suggest an associated basilar fenestration.

Characterizing the optimal operation of photocatalytic degradation of BDE-209 by nano-sized TiO_2

Brominated flame retardants have been widely used in industry. There is a rapid growing public concern for their availabilities in the environment. Advanced oxidation process （AOP） is a promising and efficient technology which may be used to remove emerging chemicals such as brominated flame retardants. This study aims at investigating optimal operational conditions for the removal of BDE-209 using nano-scaled titanium（IV） oxide. The residual PBDE congeners after photocatalytical degradation of BDE-209 by TiO2 were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry （GC-MS）. It was found that the degradability of BDE-209 by TiO2 was attributed to its photocatalytic activity but not the small size of the particles. The half-life of removing BDE-209 by TiO2 was 3.05 days under visible light. Tetra- and penta-BDEs were the major degraded products of BDE-209. Optimum conditions for photocatalytical degradation of BDE-209 was found to be at pH 12 （93% ± 1%）, 5, 10, 20 mg/l （93.0% ± 1.70%, 91.6% ± 3.21%, 91.9% ± 0.952%, respectively）, respectively of humic acid and in the form of anatase/rutile TiO2 （82% ± 3%）. Hence, the efficiency of removing BDE-209 can be maximized while being cost effective at the said operating conditions.
