Effect of herpesvirus infection on pancreatic duct cell secretion

AiM： To examine the effect of acute infection caused by herpesvirus （pseudorabies virus, PRV） on pancreatic ductal secretion. METHODS： The virulent Ba-DupGreen （BDG） and non- virulent ka-RREp01acgfp （KEG） genetically modified strains of PRV were used in this study and both of them contain the gene for green fluorescent protein （GFP）. Small.intra/ interlobular ducts were infected with BDG virus （10^7 PFU/ml for 6 h） or with KEG virus （10^10 PFU/ml for 6 h）, while non-infected ducts were incubated only with the culture media. The ducts were then cultured for a further 18 h. The rate of HCO3 secretion [base efflux -λ（B）] was determined from the buffering capacity of the cells and the initial rate of intracellular acidification （1） after sudden blockage of basolateral base loaders with dihydro-4,4,- diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2,-disulfonic acid （500 μmol/l） and amiloride （200 μmol/l）, and （2） after alkali loading the ducts by exposure to NH4Cl. All the experiments were performed in HCO3-buffered Ringer solution at 37 ℃ （n = 5 ducts for each experimental condition）. Viral structural proteins were visualized by immunohistochemistry. Virallyencoded GFP and immunofluorescence signals were recorded by a confocal laser scanning microscope.RESUlTS： The BDG virus infected the majority of accessible cells of the duct as judged by the appearance of GFP and viral anUgens in the ductal cells. KEG virus caused a similarly high efficiency of infection. After blockage of basolateral base loaders, BDG infection significantly elevated -λB-） 24 h after the infection, compared to the non-infected group. However, KEG infection did not modify -λB-）. After alkali loading the ducts, -λB-） was significantly elevated in the BDG group compared to the control group 24 h after the infection. As we found with the inhibitor stop method, no change was observed in the group KEG compared to the non-infected group. Nutrition, Metabolic Status and Reproductive Efficiency in Dairy Herds

Nutrition of transition period in dairy cows dramatically increases requirements for energy, glucose, amino acids and other nutrients in dairy cows and, parallel to that, feed intake is depressed. An insufficient or imbalanced nutrient intake might lead to the malfunction of organs, causing reproductive failure. To minimize the metabolic/reproductive damage caused by negative energy balance (NEBAl), feeding of a glucogenic and lipogenic diet containing fat-enriched supplements is recommended. in heat-stressed dairy cows, the reduction of dry matter intake causes an energy deficit, thereby accentuating NEBAl. Heat stress may also have a direct impact on oocyte quality due to the high ovarian temperatures. The intrauterine environment is also compromised in heat-stressed cows, with reduced blood flow to the uterus and increased uterine temperature;this may impair embryonic development, increase early embryonic loss and reduce the proportion of successful.inseminations. Postpartum NEBAl suppresses immune function and promotes metabolic disorders, potentially expl.ining relationships between infectious and noninfectious transition disorders. in postpartum dairy cows, pathologic ovarian phenomena including ovulatory (cystic corpora lutea) and non-ovulatory (fol.icular and luteal cysts) forms frequently occur causing decreased fertility. The main objective of this review was summarizing the most relevant information regarding nutrition and reproduction in dairy cows.

Profiles and removal efficiency of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by two different types of sewage treatment plants in Hong Kong

Sewage discharge could be a major source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in the coastal waters. Stonecutters island and Shatin Sewage Treatment Works （SCiSTW and STSTW） in Hong Kong, adopted chemically enhanced primary treatment and biological treatment, respectively. This study aimed at （1） determining the removal efficiencies of PAHs, （2） comparing the capabilities in removing PAHs, and （3） characterizing the profile of each individual PAHs, in the two sewage treatment plants （STPs）. Quantification of 16 PAHs was conducted by a Gas Chromatography. The concentrations of total PAHs decreased gradually along the treatment processes （from 301 ± 255 and 307 ± 217 ns/l to 14.9 ± 12.1 and 63.3 ± 54.1 ng/l.in STSTW and SCiSTW, respectively）. it was noted that STSTW was more capable in removing total PAHs than SCiSTW with average total removal effidency 94.4% ± 4.12% us. 79.2% ± 7.48% （p 〈 0.05）. The removal of PAHs was probably due to sorption in particular matter, confirmed by the higher distribution coefficient of individual and total PAHs in solid samples （dewatered sludge contained 92.5% and 74.7% of total PAHs in SCiSTW and STSTW, respectively） than liquid samples （final efffluent-total contained 7.53% and 25.3% of total PAHs in STSTW and SCiSTW, respectively）. Despite the impressive capability of STSTW and SCiSTW in removing PAHs, there was still a considerable amount of total PAHs （1.85 and 39.3 ks/year, respectively for the two STPs） being discharged into Hone Kon coastal waters, which would be an environmental concern.

Screening Research of Pharmaceutical Compositions Based on Succinic Acid, Ascorbic Acid and Rutin

We conduct research on the development of new medicines based on succinic acid, ascorbic acid and rutin. We studied the anti-inflammatory action （exudative inflammation, model of carrageenan-induced paw edema of rats）, the hepatoprotective （injury of rats with carbon tetrachloride） and renal protectie action. in the study, the anti-inflammatory activity of our medicines （exudative inflammation, karahenin model of inflammatory edema of paws rats） is set to ability of suppression of the inflammatory response by 24.4 %. Against the background, the action of carbon tetrachloride observed a positive effect on cholesterol- and pigment- forming liver function. Reducing the activity of enzymes AlT （alanine transaminase） and AST （aspartate transaminase） in groups of animals, which treated with our medication, talks about their ability to recover morpho functional.integrity of the membranes of hepatocytes and warn of changes in the liver damage with carbon tetrachloride. Renal protective action screening study found that investigated mixture capable of increasingly lower level of creatinine in the blood of rats： 27.27-39.18 mmol/l.in lespeflan. Similarly, the concentration of urea in the smaller of the studied using mixtures is 5.18 mmol/l, while the application lespeflanu urea concentration slightly higher is 6.78 mmol/l. This shows that hypoazotemic effect is traced compared with the control group, and better than the comparator lespeflan. Study of acute toxicity showed that the investigated mixture refers to practically nontoxic drugs. it is confirmed the need for further studies on the pharmacological activity of our facility to determine the effect on capillaries and the immune system, and as a result, prevention and treatment of influenza and ARi （acute respiratory infections）.

Highly active antiretroviral therapy per se decreased mortality and morbidity of advanced human immunodeficiency virus disease in Hong Kong

Background Morbidity and mortality of advanced human immunodeficiency virus infection （HiV） have declined in Western industrialized countries since the availability of highly active antiretroviral therapy （HAART）. it is unclear if this has also happened in Hong Kong. Methods We studied a retrospective cohort of patients with advanced HiV disease in Hong Kong, China. First, the mortality of advanced HiV disease per year was calculated for the decade 1993 to 2002, both annually and according to patient observation before and after 1997. Second, the event rates were estimated for the clinical end points of acquired immune deficiency syndrome （AiDS） and death. Univariate and mul.ivariate analyses were then performed to identify associated factors. Results The crude mortality of advanced HiV disease declined from 10. 8 - 30. 4 per 100 patients during 1993 - 1996, to 0. 8 - 6. 9 per 100 patients during 1997 - 2002. A rate ratio of 4. 04 （95% Ci, 2. 52 - 6. 47） was evident for those observed in 1993 - 1996, compared to those in 1997 - 2002. in a mul.ivariate analysis where calendar period was adjusted, use of＇highly active antiretroviral therapy was associated with rate ratios of 0. 13 （95% Ci, 0. 05 -0. 33） for death after AiDS, 0. 08 （95% Ci, 0. 04 -0. 19） for AiDS after a CD4 cell count 〈200/μ1, and 0.21 （95% Ci, 0.07 -0.67） for death after CD4 cell count 〈200/μl. in the same analysis, calendar period ceased to be a significant factor after adjustment for use of HAART. Conclusions The mortality and morbidity of advanced human immunodeficiency virus disease have declined in Hong Kong. This improved prognosis was attributable to the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy.

文章采用基于数据包络分析的Malmquist指数方法,以2000—2015年30个省份饮料制造业的平衡面板数据为研究对象,研究中国饮料制造业的全要素生产率(TFP)变动趋势以及收敛性问题。结果表明:中国饮料制造业TFP提高的动力源泉为技术进步;中国及三大区域的饮料制造业TFP增长率呈现出“倒U型”态势,中部和西部地区饮料制造业的TFP增长率显著地高于全国的平均水平,而东部地区饮料制造业的TFP增长率显著地低于全国平均水平;全国饮料制造业TFP增长呈现出不显著的绝对收敛及显著的条件收敛特征,而三个区域的饮料制造业TFP增长呈现出显著的条件收敛特征。

The First Cases of laparoscopic Colectomy for Cancer in Ziguinchor Peace Hospital

laparoscopic colectomy is a standardized technique for the curative treatment of colon cancer, based on the principles of carcinological surgery. it is rarely performed in our region but common practice in developed countries. We conducted a retrospective study of the first 4 cases of laparoscopic colectomy for cancer. The patients were 3 men and 1 woman, with a mean age of 54.2 years. Of the 4 cancers, 3 were localized to the sigmoid and one to the cecum. The main symptom was rectal bleeding. Total colonoscopy with biopsy was performed in 3 patients and the histological type was a lieberkühnian, infiltrative, moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. Thoraco-abdomino-pel.ic computed tomography (TAP CT) was performed in all the cases. Three patients were presented to the mul.idisciplinary team (MDT) prior to surgery. The operations were one right hemicolectomy and three left hemicolectomies. The mean operative time was 182.25 min [152 - 210]. Average blood loss was estimated at 200 cc. The average hospital stay was 4.71 days. Cancer staging was classified as stage i in 1 case (p T1N0M0) and stage iii in 3 cases (pT3N1Mx, pT3N2Mx). Resection margins were healthy. The number of lymph nodes removed was 12, 14, 17 and 13 respectively. Conclusion: This is a safe and reproducible technique, but requires a much higher cost than laparotomy.
