Oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation products:effect of pinealectomy or exogenous melatonin injections on biomarkers of tissue damage during acute pancreatitis

BACKGROUND:Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytripta-mine) is a free radical scavenger and a strong antioxidant,secreted by the pineal *** this study,we evaluated the effects of decreasing and increasing serum melatonin levels on malonyl.ialdehyde (MDA),superoxide dismutase (SOD),and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in pancreatic tissue from rats with experimental acute ***:Experimental acute pancreatitis was induced in three groups of Wistar al.ino rats (10 animals per group) by pancreatic ductal *** first group had only acute pancreatitis and served as the *** pinealectomy was added to acute pancreatitis in the second group,removing the source of endogenous melatonin (low melatonin levels group).The third group was given 0.1 ml daily intraperitoneal.injections of 20 mg/ml melatonin solution for one week (high melatonin levels group).The effects of melatonin levels were evaluated by comparison of the levels of MDA,SOD,and GS in pancreatic ***:We found that intraperitoneal melatonin injections decreased the levels of MDA and increased the levels of SOD and GSH in pancreatic ***:Exogenous melatonin has a preventive effect on lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage in acute pancreatitis.

The First Cases of laparoscopic Colectomy for Cancer in Ziguinchor Peace Hospital

laparoscopic colectomy is a standardized technique for the curative treatment of colon cancer, based on the principles of carcinological surgery. it is rarely performed in our region but common practice in developed countries. We conducted a retrospective study of the first 4 cases of laparoscopic colectomy for cancer. The patients were 3 men and 1 woman, with a mean age of 54.2 years. Of the 4 cancers, 3 were localized to the sigmoid and one to the cecum. The main symptom was rectal bleeding. Total colonoscopy with biopsy was performed in 3 patients and the histological type was a lieberkühnian, infiltrative, moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. Thoraco-abdomino-pel.ic computed tomography (TAP CT) was performed in all the cases. Three patients were presented to the mul.idisciplinary team (MDT) prior to surgery. The operations were one right hemicolectomy and three left hemicolectomies. The mean operative time was 182.25 min [152 - 210]. Average blood loss was estimated at 200 cc. The average hospital stay was 4.71 days. Cancer staging was classified as stage i in 1 case (p T1N0M0) and stage iii in 3 cases (pT3N1Mx, pT3N2Mx). Resection margins were healthy. The number of lymph nodes removed was 12, 14, 17 and 13 respectively. Conclusion: This is a safe and reproducible technique, but requires a much higher cost than laparotomy.

CeO2-ZeO2 solid solutions are extensively used as oxygen storage promoters in the current automotive three-way catalysts. High thermal stability of the textural properties is one of the most important requirements for practical application since temperatures up to 1273 K are easily experienced by these materials under real working conditions. in the present paper, we investigated how hydrothermal treatments applied to cakes of doped and undoped ZrO2-rich CeO2-ZrO2 precursors might improve the thermal stability of the final CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution. A rationale was developed that allowed to correlate the morphology of the hydrothermaUy treated cake with the thermal stability at 1273 K of the final product, which did not depend on the composition of the mixed oxides.

Suppression of Tumorigenicity 2 (ST2) is a member of the interleukin (il)-1 receptor family. The ST2 receptor exists in two isoforms - ST2 ligand (ST2l) and soluble ST2 (sST2). ST2l.is a membrane receptor and sST2 is a truncated receptor which is soluble in the blood, allowing it to be detected in serum. il-33 is a member of the il-1 family of ligand and is the functional ligand of ST2l receptor. it binds to the ST2l, thereby mediating its immune function.

Recovery of silica from sodium silicate solution of cal.ined boron mud

The effect of several parameters on the recovery of silicon dioxide from cal.ined boron mud（CBM）such as stirring speed, temperature, sodium silicate concentration, and carbonation time was studied. The recovery of silicon dioxide is 88 % when the stirring speed is450 r min-1, temperature is 60 °C, sodium silicate concentration is 1 mol l-1, and the carbonation time is 6 *** effect of carbonation time on the recovery of silicon dioxide is divided into three kinetic regimes, and the carbonation process of sodium silicate solution follows a second-order reaction based on the double-film theory model. The apparent rate constant of the three kinetic regimes is 0.064, 3.178, and 1.130 l h mol-1, *** amorphous SiO_2 products obtained by carbonating the purified solution have 99.6 % purity and are spherical with diameters of about 100 nm.
