Machine-learned wearable sensors for real-time hand-motion recognition: toward practical applications

Soft electromechanical sensors have led to a new paradigm of electronic devices for novel motion-based wearable applications in our daily lives. However, the vast amount of random and unidentified signals generated by complex body motions has hindered the precise recognition and practical application of this technology. Recent advancements in artificial-intelligence technology have enabled significant strides in extracting features from massive and intricate data sets, thereby presenting a breakthrough in utilizing wearable sensors for practical applications. Beyond traditional machine-learning techniques for classifying simple gestures, advanced machine-learning algorithms have been developed to handle more complex and nuanced motion-based tasks with restricted training data sets. Machine-learning techniques have improved the ability to perceive, and thus machine-learned wearable soft sensors have enabled accurate and rapid human-gesture recognition, providing real-time feedback to users. This forms a crucial component of future wearable electronics, contributing to a robust human–machine interface. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary covering materials, structures and machine-learning algorithms for hand-gesture recognition and possible practical applications through machine-learned wearable electromechanical sensors.

Electrochemical and electronic properties of nitrogen doped fullerene and its derivatives for lithium-ion battery applications

We have studied the redox potentials and electronic properties of C60 and C59N using density functional theory method. It is found that doping C60 with one nitrogen atom results in a slight increase in redox potential. Next, we have also studied C59N functionalized with various redox-active oxygen containing functional groups and strongly electron withdrawing functional groups. It is found that the intrinsic electronic structure of the molecule is the major determinant of the redox potential. Our DFT calculations show that the electron affinity to redox potential of functionalized C59N is correlated with the LUMO of the systems very well. This is the first systematic study on the redox properties and electronic structures of N-doped C60 systems.

Mitochondrial H_(2)S_(n)-Mediated Anti-Inflammatory Theranostics

The insistent demand for space-controllable delivery,which reduces the side effects of non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs(NSAIDs),has led to the development of a new theranostics-based approach for anti-inflammatory *** current anti-inflammatory treatments can be improved by designing a drug delivery system responsive to the inflammatory site biomarker,hydrogen polysulfide(H_(2)S_(n)).Here,we report a noveltheranostic agent 1(TA1),consisting of three parts:H_(2)S_(n)-mediated triggering part,a two-photon fluorophore bearing mitochondria targeting unit(Rhodol-TPP),and anti-inflammatory COX inhibitor(indomethacin).In vitro experiments showed that TA1 selectively reacts with H_(2)S_(n)to concomitantly release both Rhodol-TPP and ***-microscopy imaging of inflammation-inducedlive cells suggested that TA1 is localized in the mitochondria where the H_(2)S_(n)is *** TA1 reacted with H_(2)S_(n)in the endogenous and exogenous H_(2)S_(n)environments and in lipopolysaccharide treated inflammatory ***,TA1 suppressed COX-2 level in the inflammatory-induced cells and prostaglandin E 2(PGE2)level in blood serum from inflammation-induced mouse *** vivo experiments with inflammation-induced mouse models suggested that TA1 exhibits inflammation-site-elective drug release followed by significant therapeutic e ects,showing its function as a theranostic agent,capable of both anti-inflammatory therapy and precise *** behavior of TA1 is highly applicable in vivo model therapeutics for the inflammatory disease.

The permanent residual strain in aluminum （Al） alloy foams induced by compressive fatigue gradually increases with the increasing number of loading cycles. Consequently, the progressive shortening of Al-alloy foam degrades the dynamic material performance by the failure and ratcheting of multi-cells in the foam. In this paper, the dynamic properties of Al-alloy foams damaged by compressive fatigue were studied. The beam specimens with various residual strains were made by cyclic compression-compression stress. The dynamic bending modulus and loss factor were evaluated by using a beam transfer function method. As a result, the dynamic bending stiffness of Al-alloy foam turned out to be decreased due to damage while the loss factor was improved because of the increasing energy dissipation of such factors as cracked cell walls formed during the shortening process of the foam. The loss factor shows a manifest dependence on the fatigue residual strain.

High-frequency acoustic backscattering characteristics for acoustic detection of the red tide species Akashiwo sanguinea and Alexandrium affine

Harmful algal blooms (HABs), caused by the overgrowth of certain phytoplankton species, have negative effects on marine environments and coastal fisheries. In addition to cell-counting methods using phytoplankton nets, a hydroacoustic technique based on acoustic backscattering has been proposed for the detection of phytoplankton blooms. However, little is known of the acoustic properties of HAB species. In this study, as essential data to support this technique, we measured the acoustic properties of two HAB species, Akashiwo sanguinea and Alexandrium affine, which occur in the South Sea off the coast of Korea. Due to the small size of the target, we used ultrasound for the measurements. Experiments were conducted under laboratory and field conditions. In the laboratory experiment, the acoustic signal received from each species was directly proportional to the cell abundance. We derived a relationship between the cell abundance and acoustic signal received for each species. The measured signals were compared to predictions of a fluid sphere scattering model. When A. sanguinea blooms appeared at an abundance greater than 3 500 cells/mL, the acoustic signals varied with cell abundance, showing a good correlation. These results confirm that acoustic measurements can be used to detect HAB species.

Active Cooling e-Textiles for Smart Clothing

Cooling function is definitely one of the most desirable attributes of clothing. In spite of the recent progress on phase changing material （PCM） research, the final products with sufficient amount of cooling capability have not yet to be developed in market. A new concept of cooling fabrics has been proposed by applying ＂Peltier effect＂ to textile materials. It occurs whenever electrical current flows through two dissimilar conductors t depending on the direction of current flow, the junction of the two conductors will either absorb or release heat. This effect has been tested on P-type and N-type conducting polymers. A P-type conductive polypyrrole coated fabric was synthesized by in- situ polymerization on plain weave PET to make conductive fabrics. And an *** electrically conductive material was synthesized by treatment of MWNT and polyethyleneimine （PEI）. A noticeable amount of temperature difference has been found in the fabric.

Surface properties of Al-doped ZnO thin film before and after CF_4/Ar plasma etching

Al-doped ZnO(AZO) is considered as an alternative to transparent conductive oxide *** and achieving a stable surface are important challenges in the development and optimization of dry etching processes, which must be overcome for the application of AZO in various devices. Therefore, in this study, the etch rate and surface properties of an AZO thin film after plasma etching using the adaptive coupled plasma system were investigated. The fastest etch rate was achieved with a CF_(4)/Ar ratio of 50:50 sccm. Regardless of the ratio of CF_(4) to Ar,the transmittance of the film in the visible region exceeded 80%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the AZO thin film confirmed that metal-F bonding persists on the surface after plasma etching. It was also shown that F eliminates O vacancies. Consequently, the work function and bandgap energy increased as the ratio of CF-4 increased. This study not only provides information on the effect of plasma on AZO thin film, but identifies the cause of changes in the device characteristics during device fabrication.

The evolution of membrane-type electronics has facilitated the development of stick-and-play systems,which confer diverse electrical functions to various planar or arbitrary curvilinear *** stick-and-play concept is based on the development of thin electronic devices in a printable format and their subsequent transfer to target *** development of this technology requires control of the interfacial adhesion of the electronic prints for retrieval from a carrier and transfer to the target ***,we discuss the transfer printing for membrane-type electronics,starting from an overview of materials available for flexible substrates,transfer printing of electronic prints for retrieval,and assembly for further ***,we explain the stick-and-play concept based on fabricated membrane-type electronics;"stick" and “play"refer to the transfer of electronic devices and the performance of their electronic functions,*** particular,we broadly survey various methods based on micro/nanostructures,including gecko-inspired,interlocking,cephalopod-sucker-inspired,and cilia structures,which can be employed to stick-and-play systems for enhancing interfacial adhesion with complex target surfaces under dynamic and wet ***,we highlight the stick-and-play system application of micro/nanostructures for skin-attachable biomedical electronics,e-textiles,and environmental monitoring electronics.

Mortality rates of pathogen indicator microorganisms discharged from point and non-point sources in an urban area

This research measured the mortality rates of pathogen indicator microorganisms discharged from various point and non-point sources in an urban area. Water samples were collected from a domestic sewer, a combined sewer overflow, the effluent of a wastewater treatment plant, and an urban river. Mortality rates of indicator microorganisms in sediment of an urban fiver were also measured. Mortality rates of indicator microorganisms in domestic sewage, estimated by assuming first order kinetics at 20℃ were 0.197 day^-1, 0.234 day^-1, 0.258 day^-1 and 0.276 day^-1 for total coliform, fecal coliform, Escherichia coli, and fecal streptococci, respectively. Effects of temperature, sunlight irradiation and settlement on the mortality rate were measured. Results of this research can be used as input data for water quality modeling or can be used as design factors for treatment facilities.
