Recognizing irregular text in natural images is a challenging task in computer *** existing approaches still face difﬁculties in recognizing irre-gular text because of its diverse *** this paper,we propose a simple yet powerful irregular text recognition framework based on an encoder-decoder *** proposed framework is divided into four main ***,in the image transformation module,a Thin Plate Spline(TPS)transformation is employed to transform the irregular text image into a readable text ***-ondly,we propose a novel Spatial Attention Module(SAM)to compel the model to concentrate on text regions and obtain enriched feature ***,a deep bi-directional long short-term memory(Bi-LSTM)network is used to make a con-textual feature map out of a visual feature map generated from a Convolutional Neural Network(CNN).Finally,we propose a Dual Step Attention Mechanism(DSAM)integrated with the Connectionist Temporal Classiﬁcation(CTC)-Attention decoder to re-weights visual features and focus on the intra-sequence relationships to generate a more accurate character *** effectiveness of our proposed framework is veriﬁed through extensive experiments on various benchmarks datasets,such as SVT,ICDAR,CUTE80,and *** perfor-mance of the proposed text recognition framework is analyzed with the accuracy *** that our proposed method outperforms the existing approaches on both regular and irregular ***,the robustness of our approach is evaluated using the grocery datasets,such as GroZi-120,Web-Market,SkU-110k,and Freiburg Groceries datasets that contain complex text ***,our framework produces superior performance on grocery datasets.

Frequency and associated factors of hair loss among patients with inflammatory bowel disease

AIM: To identify the frequency of hair loss among patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) and associated clinical and disease related ***: We performed a cross sectional study in a tertiary referral adult IBD ***-reported history and characteristics of hair loss as well as clinical and demographic information were *** were analyzed using univariate and multivariate ***: Two hundred and ten consecutive IBD patients were recruited; one hundred and fifty patients met predefined inclusion and exclusion *** percent of patients reported a history of hair ***,gender,IBD type and disease duration were not associated with hair *** loss was reported less frequently among patients with use of mesalamine(54% vs 73%,P = 0.03) and antitumor necrosis factor medications(anti-TNF)(14% vs 40%,P = 0.001).In multivariate analyses adjusting for gender,IBD type and duration of disease,these associations with mesalamine and anti-TNF remained significant [(adjusted values for mesalamine(OR = 0.43,95%CI: 0.19-0.86) and anti-TNFs(OR = 0.28,95%CI: 0.08-0.98)].CONCLUSION: Hair loss is common among patients with *** and anti-TNF medications were associated with lower odds of hair *** studies are required to assess the mechanism of hair loss among patients with IBD.

Let’s Talk LGBTQIA+:Strategies and Activities for Teaching Diversity and Inclusion in the Foreign Language Classroom at the College Level

In this presentation,the author explores strategies and activities that create a welcoming and nurturing environment for LGBTQIA+foreign language students at the college level in the United ***,as it is commonly stated,there is a clear lack of visibility,acceptance/tolerance,and inclusion of LGBTQIA+voices(active and proactive)in foreign language teaching and learning(pedagogical material as well as in-class attitudes and delivery).The reasons for this deficiency are diverse since they cover not only outward discrimination against and/or indifference(passive-aggressive behavior)toward the LGBTQIA+community and its plight,but they also illustrate the sheer,physical inexistence of quality material that can be used to create,present,and foster a welcoming and all-encompassing classroom environment that addresses the diverse spectrum of the LGBTQIA+community while its members try to learn a foreign language and(positively)negotiate how to express their very identity in their new language of ***,the scant material that is available in the United States as well as in other Western countries where the LGBTQIA+community by and large is accepted-at least from the legal point of view-hardly represents and covers the subject matter in a satisfactory *** address this gap,the author will provide some examples in European Portuguese(EP)and Italian(IT),followed by a courtesy translation in English,to illustrate some positive activities and strategies for including LGBTQIA+-related subject matter in the foreign language classroom at the college *** is his desire that instructors of other foreign languages duplicate in their respective vernaculars the strategies and activities herein presented in order to create a welcoming and safe classroom environment that embraces the LGBTQIA+community as it goes through the enjoyable journey of learning a new language and culture.

Exploring correlations among copy number variants

There have been a great many recent studies investigating the extent of Copy Number Variation in the genomes of various species such as human, cattle, dogs and many others. The results from these studies indicate that the extent of the Copy Number Variation in the genome is considerable, and that in humans and in cattle, frequencies of different Copy Number Variants may differ in different breeds/ethnicities. This is not entirely unexpected as allele frequencies of certain loci vary with different breeds/ ethnicities/species and many known Copy Number Variants behave similarly to ordinary markers as regards Mendelian segregation. It is also well known in many instances, species/breeds/ethnicities show variation not only in marker allele frequencies, but also in the extent of Linkage Disequilibrium between markers. Thus it is worth investigating the extent of association between Copy Number Variants in different populations. In this paper we will investigate the extent of correlations between selected Copy Number Variants in different human populations and show that statistically significant correlations exist and are strongly population dependent.

Application of Different Models for the Prediction of the kinetics of Direct Reduction of Natural Iron Ores

Simulation of the direct reduction conditions was performed in a laboratory furnace. Lump samples from natural hematite iron ore were reduced by a gas mixture of H2 and CO (H2/CO =1.5) at temperatures of 700°C, 800°C and 900°C. The effect of reduction temperature on the reduction degree, reduction rate of samples and carbon deposition were investigated and discussed in this study. The thermo-gravimetric data obtained from the reduction experiments was run in a programme that calculates the solid conversion rate. Also, three models: 1) Grain Model (GM), 2) Volumetric Model (VM), and 3) the Random Pore Model (RPM), were used to estimate the reduction kinetics of natural iron ores. It was found that the RPM model result agreed best with the obtained experimental results. Furthermore, it gave better predictions of the natural iron oxide conversion and thereby the reduction kinetics.

Effect of <i>Moringa oleifera</i>Leaf Powder Supplementation on Some Quality Characteristics of Wheat Bread

The effect of Moringa oleifera leaf powder supplementation on some physico-chemical and sensory properties of wheat bread was determined. Bread was prepared from varying proportions of 100%, 99%, 98%, 97%, 96% and 95% wheat flour supplemented with 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% Moringa oleifera leaf powder respectively. The bread samples were allowed to cool at ambient temperature (30℃± 1℃) and analysed for some physical properties, proximate composition, and sensory attributes. Moringa leaf powder addition significantly (p % to 3.28%), ash (1.10% to 1.65%), protein (9.07% to 13.97%), and ether extract (1.51% to 2.59%), while decreasing moisture content (35.20% to 27.65%). Moringa leaf powder supplementation also significantly (p cm3, 32.32 to 25.65 g, 7.00 to 5.83 cm and 4.70 to 2.65 cm3/g respectively, while the loaf weight increased from 169.20 to 185.86 g. There was a significant (p mg/100g and 0.02 to 3.27 mg/100g respectively, while Iron (Fe) and Cupper (Cu) contents decreased from 2.74 to 1.25 mg/100g and 2.26 to 0.03 mg/100g respectively. Sensory evaluation showed that although there was significant (p Moringa supplementation. This implies that despite the high nutrient content of Moringa oleifera powder, it is not a good substitute for wheat in bread production due to its physical characteristics and sensory attributes.

Improving HIV Treatment Adherence through a Public Private Partnership in Zambia

Background: Effective ART with low viral loads and absence of STIs significantly reduce chances of sexual transmission of HIV. ART is therefore a key pillar in HIV prevention. Appropriate support is however essential for optimum treatment outcome, patient safety and HIV prevention benefit. The scale-up of ART continues to strain the already overstretched human resources in public facilities, impacts on the quality of care, and contributes to loss to follow-up. Task shifting is therefore a strategy to augment the limited human resources. Methodology: In partnership with the Livingstone General Hospital (LGH) and four private pharmacists, the COH III Project through Howard University is promoting quality HIV care by engaging the pharmacists in adherence counselling and treatment monitoring. The LGH ART pharmacist allocates consenting stable ART clients to pharmacies based on willingness to be referred and patient preference. Patients are given schedule of visits to pharmacies where the pharmacists provide medication/adherence counselling and monitor side effects. Patients with medication/treatment issues are referred back to the LGH ART clinic for follow-up. Results: Between October 2012 and August 2013, 280 patients were enrolled and followed up by the four pharmacists. 69% of patients visited the pharmacy at least once, 25% at least twice and 13% at least thrice. The 33 client referrals by pharmacists to LGH were related to adverse drug reactions, suspected treatment failure, pregnancy, and treatment monitoring. The intervention has reduced workload for the ART pharmacist;improved communication of treatment challenges and identification of patients with medication related problems, and reduced travel distances and waiting times. This has resulted in improved adherence and better patient outcomes. Conclusion: Private pharmacists present an opportunity to improve quality of HIV interventions in poor human resource capacity settings. The necessary legal and regulatory

The Prospects of Uganda’s Iron Ore Deposits in Developing the Iron and Steel Industry

Uganda aspires to exploit its abundant iron ore resources to supply the required raw material for developing its iron and steel industry across all the phases of the value chain. The country imports USD 369 million worth of iron and steel products annually, 60% of which are raw materials for the steel processing plants. The National Planning Authority, the government planning agency, undertook a study to assess the possibility of using the iron ore deposits available in the country, as a source of supply for iron and steel production. In the study, available geological literature was collected from various sources and analysed in order to understand the mode of iron ore mineralization in Uganda, particularly, that in the South West. A field excursion to the deposits was conducted in order to ground truth the information obtained from literature research;carry out a detailed reconnaissance study so as to benchmark the likely scenarios required in the development of the iron and steel value chain;and establish the likely mining and processing requirements of the deposits. The reconnaissance survey confirmed the existence of hematite deposits that visually show characteristics of high-quality iron ore (55% - 68% Fe) suitable for iron production. From surficial investigations, the deposits are mainly comprised of thin beds of mineralisation. The deposits occur in the form of massive hematite, which is amenable to mining and direct feed to the ore processing plants, and specularite hematite (a metamorphic platy variety), which normally requires mineral processing for amenability to reduction processes. From the analysis, the country has sufficient deposits of a high grade that can support a steel industry, though more detailed quantifications and characterisations need to be prioritised by the government.

Trends of kalemia at Diagnosis of Acidosis versus Non-Acidosis Diabetic ketosis Décompensations in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)

Introduction: Electrolyte’s profile in non-acidosis diabetic ketosis is poorly specified. We aimed to determine the nature of diabetic ketosis decompensations as well as the profile of kalemia and factors associated with its disorders at diagnosis of acidosis compared to non-acidosis diabetic ketosis. Methods: The study was retrospective from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2011 in Yalgado Ouédraogo teaching hospital. Diabetic in-patients suffering from simple ketosis, keto-acidosis or mixed decompensation, who achieved blood electrolytes assessment before intensive insulin therapy were included. Results: Sixty two patients were studied. The sex ratio was 0.7 and the mean age was 41.7 years. keto-acidosis, simple ketosis and mixed decompensation were diagnosed respectively in 18 (29%), 32 (51.6%) and 12 (19.4%) patients. kalemia was normal in 42 (67.7%), while hypokalemia and hyperkalemia were reported respectively in 11 (17.8%) and 9 (14.5%) patients. kalemia was often normal in all types of ketosis decompensation and disorders of kalemia occurred more in patients with keto-acidosis (50%) than those with simple ketosis (21.9%);p = 0.04. Renal failure was diagnosed in 10 patients (50%) with and 2 (4.8%) without kalemia’s disorders;p = 0.0001. Seven patients (35%) with and 4 (9.5%) without kalemia’s disorders suffered from unconsciousness;p = 0.02. It happens more in hyperkalemia (44.4%) than in normal kalemia condition (9.5%);p = 0.02. Conclusion: If kalemia is often normal in all types of diabetic ketosis emergencies, hypokalemia is the most initial frequent potassium disorder.
