Vortex flow is applied to a cyclone dust collector, a vortex combustion chamber, and a vortex diode for vortex control. In order to apply the vortex flow to the industries, it is necessary to keep the stable flow condition and to estimate the response time of the transient flow process and also the intensity of the vortex flow. For control vortex flow, two types of vortex chamber with two inlet pipes were designed. One of them is to promote the vortex flow named as co-Rotating Flow System and another one is to hinder the vortex flow named as counter-Rotating Flow System. The pressure drops and the velocity distributions were measured for these vortex chambers. The estimation of the tangential velocity by the application of the angular momentum flux is compared with the measured velocity by a cylindrical Pitot-tube. The characteristics of the total pressure drop could be explained by introducing the circulation.

AIM:To investigate the presence of high-risk human papilloma virus (HPV) in esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (ESccs) in a non-selected Mexican population.METHODS: cases with a pathological diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus were obtained from Department of Pathology files, at the National cancer Institute in Mexico city during the period between 2000 and 2008. Slides from each case were reviewed and cases with sufficient neoplastic tissue were selected for molecular analysis. DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tissue samples for polymerase chain reaction analysis to detect HPV DNA sequences. Demographic and clinical data of each patient were retrieved from corresponding clinical records.RESULTS: HPV was detected in 15 (25%) of ESccs. HPV-16 was the most frequently observed genotype, followed by HPV-18; HPV-59 was also detected in one case. Unfortunately, HPV genotype could not be established in three cases due to lack of material for direct sequencing, although universal primers detected the presence of HPV generic sequences. No low-risk HPV genotypes were found nor was HPV-16/18 co-infection. HPV presence in EScc was not significantly associated with gender, age, alcohol consumption, smoking, anatomic location, or histologic grade. All patients belonged to low and very low socioeconomic strata, and were diagnosed at advanced disease stage. Male patients were most commonly affected and the male:female ratio in HPV-positive EScc increased two- fold in comparison with HPV-negative cases (6.5:1 vs 3.1:1).cONcLUSION: High prevalence of high-risk HPV in EScc in Mexico does not support the hypothesis that HPV-associated EScc is more common in areas with higher EScc incidence rates.

Magnesium and its alloys are the most investigated materials for solid-state hydrogen storage in the form of metal hydrides,but there are still unresolved problems with the kinetics and thermodynamics of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of this group of materials.Severe plastic deformation(SPD)methods,such as equal-channel angular pressing(EcAP),high-pressure torsion(HPT),intensive rolling,and fast forging,have been widely used to enhance the activation,air resistance,and hydrogenation/dehydrogenation kinetics of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials by introducing ultrafine/nanoscale grains and crystal lattice defects.These severely deformed materials,particularly in the presence of alloying additives or second-phase nanoparticles,can show not only fast hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics but also good cycling stability.It was shown that some materials that are apparently inert to hydrogen can absorb hydrogen after SPD processing.Moreover,the SPD methods were effectively used for hydrogen binding-energy engineering and synthesizing new magnesium alloys with low thermodynamic stability for reversible low/room-temperature hydrogen storage,such as nanoglasses,high-entropy alloys,and metastable phases including the high-pressureγ-MgH2 polymorph.This work reviews recent advances in the development of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials by SPD processing and discusses their potential in future applications.

There are two kinetic regimes in high temperature oxidation of metals and alloys.One is the parabolic kinetics in which the ionic diffusion through oxide scales is the rate-determining step.The other is the linear kinetics in which rate determining process is the supply of oxidant through the gaseous boundary layer.The oxygen chemical potential is almost the same as that in the atmosphere in the former case,but in the later case,the oxygen chemical potential is much lower than that in the atmosphere.The oxygen chemical potential at the surface of scale is a good measure of the protective character of the scale.

Hydrogen has been widely considered as a clean energy carrier that bridges the energy producers and energy consumers in an efficient and safe way for a sustainable society.Hydrogen can be stored in a gas,liquid and solid states and each method has its unique advantage.Though compressed hydrogen and liquefied hydrogen are mature technologies for industrial applications,appropriate measures are necessary to deal with the issues at high pressure up to around 100 MPa and low temperature at around 20 k.Distinct from those technologies,storing hydrogen in solid-state hydrides can realize a more compact and much safer approach that does not require high hydrogen pressure and cryogenic temperature.In this review,we will provide an overview of the majormaterial groups that are capable of absorbing and desorbing hydrogen reversibly.The main features on hydrogen storage properties of each material group are summarized,together with the discussion of the key issues and the guidance of materials design,aiming at providing insights for new material development as well as industrial applications.

2D position sensitive, single-sided Si stripixel detector was selected as the one of the two main components of the Si vertex tracker (Si SVX) in the upgraded PHENIX detector at RHIc (relativistic heavy ion collider) in Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). This is the first large scale application of the novel Si stripixel detector in a real large experiment after many years of research and development at BNL. The first and second prototype fabrication runs of the SVX stripixel detectors were carried out successfully in BNL’s Si detector development and processing Lab. The processing of these stripixel detectors is similar to that for the standard single-sided strip detectors: one-sided processing, single implant for the pixel (strip) electrodes, etc. The only additional processing step is the double metal process, a technology that is simple and well matured by many Si detector processing industries and labs, including BNL. The laser and beam tests on those prototype detectors show the 2D position sensitivity and good position resolution in both X and U coordinates (about 25 μm for 80 μm pitch). For the mass production of 400 sensors needed for the Si SVX, the processing technology has been successfully transferred to the industrial: Hamamatsu Photonics (HPk). HPk has produced a pre-production run of stripixel sensors with the full PHENIX SVX specification on 150 mm diameter wafers. The laser tests on these pre-production wafers show good signal to noise ratio (about 20∶1).

Hydrogen may play a key role in a future sustainable energy system as a carrier of renewable energy to replace hydrocarbons. This review describes the fundamental physical and chemical properties of hydrogen and basic theories of hydrogen sorption reactions, followed by the emphasis on state-of-the-art of the hydrogen storage properties of selected interstitial metallic hydrides and magnesium hydride, especially for stationary energy storage related utilizations. Finally, new perspectives for utilization of metal hydrides in other applications will be reviewed.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection of a rectal carcinoid tumor using grasping type scissors forceps

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) with a knife is a technically demanding procedure associated with a high complication rate. The shortcomings of this method are the inability to fix the knife to the target lesion, and compression of the lesion. These can lead to major complications such as perforation and bleeding. To reduce the risk of complications related to ESD, we developed a new grasping type scissors forceps (GSF), which can grasp and incise the targeted tissue using electrosurgical current. colonoscopy on a 55-year-old woman revealed a 10-mm rectal submucosal nodule. The histological diagnosis of the specimen obtained by biopsy was carcinoid tumor. Endoscopic ultrasonography demonstrated a hypoechoic solid tumor limited to the submucosa without lymph node involvement. It was safely and accurately resected without unexpected incision by ESD using a GSF. No delayed hemorrhage or perforation occurred. Histological examination confirmed the carcinoid tumor was completely excised with negative resection margin.

Homeostasis Lighting control System Using a Sensor Agent Robot

In this study, “homeostasis”, the function by which living things keep their constancy, was emulated as a lighting control for a building space. The algorithm we developed mimics the mechanisms of the endocrine and immune systems. The endocrine system transmits information entirely, whereas the immune system transmits information with a concentration gradient. A lighting control system using the proposed algorithm was evaluated in a simulation and experiment using a sensor agent robot. In this algorithm, a robot recognizes a person’s behavior and uses it to decide his or her preference as to the illuminance. The results indicate that the algorithm can be used to realize a comfortable lighting control in several situations.
