An engineering application tool for prediction of the static equilibrium bay （ Beach Mod） is established to describe two bay shape formulas by use of the programming software ＂MATLAB＂ with a graphic user interface （ GUI）. The tool is user-friendly for engineering students for the design of beach shapes. This tool was tested through application on three types of beaches in Taiwan and Australia. By implementing the concept of Headland Control, the Beach Mod program allows users to draw a structure and create an ＇artificial headland. The results indicate that Beach Mod can efficiently forecast beach changes as well as MEPBAY, a competing software package, while boasting a better user interface.

AIM: To study whether hemoglobin could amplify colon cancer cell proliferation via reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. METHODS: Colon cancer cell line HT-29 was grown in the conventional method using RPMI1640 media. The viability of the cells was measured using the colorimetric MTT [3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazo- lium bromide] assay after adding hemoglobin. we de- termined reactive oxygen species levels to be indicators of oxidative stress in HT 29 cell lines with and without hemoglobin and/or 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), 5’-deoxy-5-flu- orouridine (5-DFUR) using fluorometric dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFH-DA) assay. RESULTS: Cellular proliferation was increased with he- moglobin in a concentration-dependent manner. A signif- icant increment on ROS levels was found in HT 29 cells following hemoglobin incubation. The cytotoxic effects of 5-FU and 5-DFUR were significantly blunted by admin- istration of hemoglobin. There was a slight increase of peroxiredoxin 1, superoxide dismutase 1 concentration according to different hemoglobin concentrations. CONCLUSION: Hemoglobin has a cellular proliferative effect on HT-29 colon cancer cell line by production of ROS. Also, hemoglobin abates cytotoxic effects of che- motherapeutic agents such as 5-FU and 5-DFUR.

The structure–dynamics correlations in a nonlocal manner were investigated in CuZr metallic glass-forming liquids via classical molecular dynamics simulations.A spatial coarse-graining approach was employed to incorporate the nonlocal structural information of given structural order parameters in the structure–dynamics *** is found that the correlation between structure order parameters and dynamics increases with increasing coarse-graining length and has a characteristic length ***,the characteristic correlation length exhibits a non-monotonic temperature evolution as temperature approaches glass transition temperature,which is not sensitive to the considered structure order *** results unveil a striking change in the structure–dynamics correlation,which involves no fitting theoretical *** findings provide new insight into the structure–dynamics correlation in glass transition.

This paper proposes a novel reinforcement learning(RL)architecture for the efficient scheduling and control of the heating,ventilation and air conditioning(HVAC)system in a commercial building while harnessing its de-mand response(DR)*** advances in automated building management systems,this can be achieved seamlessly by a smart autonomous RL agent which takes the best action,for example,a change in HVAC temper-ature set point,necessary to change the electricity usage pattern of a building in response to demand response signals,and with minimal thermal comfort impact to *** research in this area has tackled only individual aspects of the problem using ***,due to the challenges in implementing demand response with whole-building models,simpler analytical models which poorly capture reality have been used *** where whole-building models are applied,RL is used for HVAC control mainly to achieve energy efficiency goals while demand response is ***,in this research,we implement a holistic framework by designing an efficient RL controller for a whole-building model which learns to optimise and control the HVAC system for improved energy efficiency and thermal comfort levels in addition to achieving demand response *** simulation results show that by applying reinforcement learning for normal HVAC operation,a maximum weekly energy reduction of up to 22%can be achieved compared to a handcrafted baseline ***,by employing a DR-aware RL controller during demand response periods,average power reductions or increases of up to 50%can be achieved on a weekly basis compared to the default RL controller,while keeping occupant thermal comfort levels within acceptable bounds.

Inspired by the controversy over tensile deformation modes of single-crystalline 〈110〉/{111} Au nanowires, we investigated the dependency of the deformation mode on diameters of nanowires using the molecular dynamics technique. A new criterion for assessing the preferred deformation mode-slip or twin propagation--of nanowires as a function of nanowire diameter is presented. The results demonstrate the size-dependent transition, from superplastic deformation mediated by twin propagation to the rupture by localized slips in deformed region as the nanowire diameter decreases. Moreover, the criterion was successfully applied to explain the superplastic deformation of Cu nanowires.

Objective:To investigate the larvicidal activity,inhibition effect on development,histopathological alteration and morphological aberration induced by the extracts derived from seaweeds Bryopsis pennuta(***),Sargassum binderi(***) and Padina australis in Aedes aegypti(***) larvae and to characterize the phytochetnical components of the three ***:Larvicidal activity of the seaweeds towards the larvae of *** was determined according to *** inhibition effect of seaweeds was assessed by determining the mortality,adult emergence rate,larval and pupa duration of the treated *** effect on midgut epithelium of larvae and morphological aberration induced by the methanol extracts were *** analysis was done to determine the presence of alkaloids,saponins,steroids and terpenoids in the ***:Chloroform partition of *** extract exhibited the strongest larvicidal activity(LC_(50) = 82.55 μg/mL).followed by methanol extract of ***(LC_(50) = 160.07 μg/mL) and chloroform partition of *** extract(LC_(50) = 192.43 μg/mL).The methanol extract of *** exhibited the strongest effect on prolongation of larval period(1.5-fold longer as compared to control) and resulted in strongest inhibition effect in adult emergence(98.67%).The histopathological study showed that larvae treated with seaweed extracts had cytopathological alteration of the midgut *** morphological observation revealed that the anal papillae and terminal spiracles of larvae were the common sites of ***:The study provided information on various effects of seaweed extracts on *** investigation on identifying the active compounds and their mechanisms of action is recommended.

Left-sided periappendiceal abscesses occur in association with two types of congenital anomaly: intestinal malrotation and situs inversus. It is diffi cult to obtain an accurate preoperative diagnosis of these abscesses due to the abnormal position of the appendix. we present an unusual case of a left-sided periappendiceal abscess in an adult with intestinal malrotation, the diagnosis of which was a challenge.

Osteocytes reside as three-dimensionally（3D） networked cells in the lacunocanalicular structure of bones and regulate bone and mineral homeostasis. Despite of their important regulatory roles, in vitro studies of osteocytes have been challenging because：（1） current cell lines do not sufficiently represent the phenotypic features of mature osteocytes and（2） primary cells rapidly differentiate to osteoblasts upon isolation. In this study, we used a 3D perfusion culture approach to：（1） construct the 3D cellular network of primary murine osteocytes by biomimetic assembly with microbeads and（2） reproduce ex vivo the phenotype of primary murine osteocytes, for the first time to our best knowledge. In order to enable 3D construction with a sufficient number of viable cells, we used a proliferated osteoblastic population of healthy cells outgrown from digested bone chips. The diameter of microbeads was controlled to：（1） distribute and entrap cells within the interstitial spaces between the microbeads and（2） maintain average cell-to-cell distance to be about 19 mm. The entrapped cells formed a 3D cellular network by extending and connecting their processes through openings between the microbeads. Also, with increasing culture time, the entrapped cells exhibited the characteristic gene expressions（SOST and FGF23） and nonproliferative behavior of mature osteocytes. In contrast, 2D-cultured cells continued their osteoblastic differentiation and proliferation. This 3D biomimetic approach is expected to provide a new means of：（1） studying flow-induced shear stress on the mechanotransduction function of primary osteocytes,（2） studying physiological functions of 3D-networked osteocytes with in vitro convenience,and（3） developing clinically relevant human bone disease models.

Data Utilization-Based Adaptive Data Management Method for Distributed Storage System in wAN Environment

Recently,research on a distributed storage system that efficiently manages a large amount of data has been actively conducted following data production and demand *** expansion limits exist for traditional standalone storage systems,such as I/O and file system ***,the existing distributed storage system does not consider where data is consumed and is more focused on data dissemination and optimizing the lookup cost of data *** this leads to system performance degradation due to low locality occurring in a wide Area Network(wAN)environment with high network *** problem hinders deploying distributed storage systems to multiple data centers over *** lowers the scalability of distributed storage systems to accommodate data storage *** paper proposes a method for distributing data in a wAN environment considering network latency and data locality to solve this problem and increase overall system *** proposed distributed storage method monitors data utilization and locality to classify data temperature as hot,warm,and *** assigned data temperature,the proposed algorithm adaptively selects the appropriate data center and places data accordingly to overcome the excess latency from the wAN environment,leading to overall system performance *** paper also conducts simulations to evaluate the proposed and existing distributed storage *** result shows that our proposed method reduced latency by 38%compared to the existing ***,the proposed method in this paper can be used in large-scale distributed storage systems over a wAN environment to improve latency and performance compared to existing methods,such as consistent hashing.
