Chronic inflammation is often associated with alcoholrelated medical conditions. The key inducer of such inflammation, and also the best understood, is gut microflora-derived lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Alcohol can significantly increase the translocation of LPS from the gut. In healthy individuals, the adverse effects of LPS are kept in check by the actions and interactions of multiple organs. The liver plays a central role in detoxifying LPS and producing a balanced cytokine milieu. The central nervous system contributes to anti-inflammatory regulation through neuroimmunoendocrine actions. Chronic alcohol use impairs not only gut and liver functions, but also multi-organ interactions, leading to persistent systemic inflammation and ultimately, to organ damage. The study of these interactions may provide potential new targets for therapeutic intervention.

Peptidyl-prolyl isomerase-like 1(PPIL1)is associated with the human spliceosome ***,its function in pre-mRNA splicing remains *** this study,we show that Arabidopsis thaliana CYCLOPhILIN 18-2(AtCYP18-2),a PPIL1 homolog,plays an essential role in heat tolerance by regulating pre-mRNA *** heat stress conditions,AtCYP18-2 expression was upregulated in mature plants and GFP-tagged AtCYP18-2 redistributed to nuclear and cytoplasmic *** determined that AtCYP18-2 interacts with several spliceosome complex B^(ACT)components in nuclear puncta and is primarily associated with the small nuclear RNAs U5 and U6 in response to heat *** AtCYP18-2 loss-of-function allele cyp18-2 engineered by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing exhibited a hypersensitive phenotype to heat stress relative to the wild ***,global transcriptome profiling showed that the cyp18-2 mutation affects alternative splicing of heat stress–responsive genes under heat stress conditions,particularly intron retention(IR).The abundance of most intron-containing transcripts of a subset of genes essential for thermotolerance decreased in cyp18-2 compared to the wild ***,the intron-containing transcripts of two heat stress-related genes,hEAT ShOCk PROTEIN 101(hSP101)and hEAT ShOCk FACTOR A2(hSFA2),produced functional ***101-IR-GFP localization was responsive to heat stress,and hSFA2-Ⅲ-IR interacted with hSF1 and hSP90.1 in plant *** findings reveal that CYP18-2 functions as a splicing factor within the B~(ACT)spliceosome complex and is crucial for ensuring the production of adequate levels of alternatively spliced transcripts to enhance thermotolerance.

The efficacy of commercially available antimicrobials for fresh produce—electrolyzed water(EW;around 60 mg/L of free chlorine),a combination of lactic acid and phosphoric acid-based(LPA)and citric acid-based(CA)—was compared with tap water(TW)in preventing cross-contamination during the soaking step of crisping at a retail setting.A bunch of cilantro((103.7±14.9)g/bunch)was inoculated with a three-strain cocktail of nalidixic acid-resistant Salmonella enterica(***)and Escherichia coli(***)O157:h7,*** and Listeria monocytogenes(***),or *** O157:h7 and ***(around 5.0 log CFU/g).One inoculated and seven non-inoculated cilantro bunches were soaked in 76 L of TW,EW,LPA,and CA for 5 *** additional soakings,each with eight bunches of non-inoculated cilantro,were performed in the same soaking *** determine the cross-contamination of inoculated foodborne pathogens via soaking water,the cilantro samples and soaking water following each soaking step were subjected to microbiological analyses using selective media supplemented with nalidixic acid(100μg/mL).During the first soaking,significantly greater reductions in Salmonella((2.9±0.5)log CFU/g),*** O157:h7((3.0±0.1)log CFU/g),and ***((2.7±0.3)log CFU/g)on cilantro were achieved with EW compared to soaking with TW,LPA,and CA(Phogens from inoculated cilantro to non-inoculated cilantro was completely mitigated by EW during three subsequent soaking *** the exception of TW soaking water,no inoculated foodborne pathogens were detected in the 100 mL soaking water of EW,CA,and LPA *** an appropriate concentration of chemical antimicrobial in water during the soaking step of crisping aids in mitigating cross-contamination of foodborne pathogen(s)in cilantro bunches.

Correlation between gas and dust column density has been studied for the dark globule L1523. The 13CO（J=1→0） emission is used for tracing the gas, and the IR emissions, for tracing the dust constituent. In order to match the beam resolution between the images, a beam de-convolution algorithm based on the Maximum Correlation Method （MCM） was applied on the Infrared Astronomical Satellite （IRAS） data. The morphology of 13CO column density map shows a close correlation to that of 100μm dust optical depth. The distribution of the optical depth at 100 μm follows that of gas column density more closely than does the flux map at either 60 or 100μm. The ratio of the 13CO column density to the 100μm optical depth shows a decreasing trend with increasing dust optical depth in the central part, indicating possible molecular gas condensation onto dust particles. The excessive decrease in the CO column density in the envelope may most probably be due to the photo-dissociation of CO molecules.

Enhancing the stability and durability of metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)is vital for practical applications because many promising MOF materials suffer from phase transitions and/or structural decompositions with humidity being a particularly damaging *** mechanical engineering,the frame of buildings and furniture can be stabilized significantly by installing a truss *** the same principle,we functionalized the organic component of MOF-5 to contain a carbazole moiety that can act as a molecular truss beam by reaching across the corner and forming a stableπ–πinteraction with a phenyl group on the edge position of the *** structural support enhanced the stability of the MOF substantially,allowing the designed MOF to maintain compositional integrity under steam conditions at 90℃for~5 *** unmodified MOF-5 shows clear signs of structural collapse after~1 h.

To overcome the serious technological issues affecting lithium-sulfur(Li-S) batteries,such as sluggish sulfur redox kinetics and the detrimental shuttle effect,heterostructure engineering has been investigated as a strategy to effectively capture soluble lithium polysulfide intermediates and promote their conversion reaction by integrating highly polar metal oxides with catalytically active metals ***,to fully exploit the outstanding properties of heterostructure-based composites,their detailed structure and interfacial contacts should be designed ***,optimally arranged TiO_(2)and MoS_(2)-based heterostructures(TiO_(2)@MoS_(2)) are fabricated on carbon cloth as a multifunctional interlayer to efficiently trap polysulfide intermediates and accelerate their redox *** to the synergistic effects between TiO_(2)and MoS_(2)and the uniform heterointerface distribution that induces the ideally oriented built-in electric field,Li-S batteries with TiO_(2)@MoS_(2)interlayers exhibit high rate capability(601 mA h g^(-1)at 5 C),good cycling stability(capacity-fade rate of 0.067% per cycle over 500 cycles at2 C),and satisfactory areal capacity(5.2 mA h cm^(-2)) under an increased sulfur loading of 5.2 mg cm^(-2).Moreover,by comparing with a MoS_(2)@TiO_(2)interlayer composed of reversely arranged heterostructures,the effect of the built-in electric field’s direction on the electrocatalytic reactions of polysulfide intermediates is thoroughly investigated for the first *** superior electrocatalytic activities of the rationally arranged TiO_(2)@MoS_(2)interlayer demonstrate the importance of optimizing the built-in electric field of heterostructures for producing high-performance Li-S batteries.

The best active twist schedules exploiting various waveform types are sought taking advantage of the global search algorithm for the reduction of hub vibration and/or power required of a rotor in high-speed conditions. The active twist schedules include two non-harmonic inputs formed based on segmented step functions as well as the simple harmonic waveform input. An advanced Particle Swarm assisted Genetic Algorithm（PSGA） is employed for the optimizer. A rotorcraft Computational Structural Dynamics（CSD） code CAMRAD II is used to perform the rotor aeromechanics analysis. A Computation Fluid Dynamics（CFD） code is coupled with CSD for verification and some physical insights. The PSGA optimization results are verified against the parameter sweep study performed using the harmonic actuation. The optimum twist schedules according to the performance and/or vibration reduction strategy are obtained and their optimization gains are compared between the actuation cases. A two-phase non-harmonic actuation schedule demonstrates the best outcome in decreasing the power required while a four-phase non-harmonic schedule results in the best vibration reduction as well as the simultaneous reductions in the power required and vibration. The mechanism of reduction to the performance gains is identified illustrating the section airloads, angle-of-attack distribution, and elastic twist deformation predicted by the present approaches.

Resource-scarce regions with serious COVID-19 outbreaks do not have enough ventilators to support critically ill patients,and these shortages are especially devastating in developing *** help alleviate this strain,we have designed and tested the accessible low-barrier in vivo-validated economical ventilator(ALIVE Vent),a COVID-19-inspired,cost-effective,open-source,in vivo-validated solution made from commercially available *** ALIVE Vent operates using compressed oxygen and air to drive inspiration,while two solenoid valves ensure one-way flow and precise cycle *** device was functionally tested and profiled using a variable resistance and compliance artificial lung and validated in anesthetized large *** functional test results revealed its effective operation under a wide variety of ventilation conditions defined by the American Association of Respiratory Care guidelines for ventilator *** large animal test showed that our ventilator performed similarly if not better than a standard ventilator in maintaining optimal ventilation *** FiO2,respiratory rate,inspiratory to expiratory time ratio,positive-end expiratory pressure,and peak inspiratory pressure were successfully maintained within normal,clinically validated ranges,and the animals were recovered without any *** regions with limited access to ventilators,the ALIVE Vent can help alleviate shortages,and we have ensured that all used materials are publicly *** this pandemic has elucidated enormous global inequalities in healthcare,innovative,cost-effective solutions aimed at reducing socio-economic barriers,such as the ALIVE Vent,can help enable access to prompt healthcare and life saving technology on a global scale and beyond COVID-19.
