Shock wave mitigation using zig-zag structures and cylindrical obstructions

The present study focuses on the mitigation of shock wave using novel geometric passages in the flow *** strategy is to produce multiple shock reflections and diffractions in the passage with minimum flow obstruction,which in turn is expected to reduce the shock wave strength at the target *** the present study the interaction of a plane shock front(generated from a shock tube)with various geometric designs such as,1)zig-zag geometric passage,2)staggered cylindrical obstructions and 3)zigzag passage with cylindrical obstructions have been investigated using computational *** is seen from the numerical simulation that,among the various designs,the maximum shock attenuation is produced by the zig-zag passage with cylindrical obstructions which is then followed by zig-zag passage and staggered cylindrical obstructions.A comprehensive investigation on the shock wave reflection and diffraction phenomena happening in the proposed complex passages have also been carried *** the new zig-zag design,the initial shock wave undergoes shock wave reflection and diffraction process which swaps alternatively as the shock front moves from one turn to the other *** cyclic shock reflection and diffraction process helps in diffusing the shock wave energy with practically no obstruction to the flow *** is found that by combining the shock attenuation ability of zig-zag passage(using shock reflection and diffraction)with the shock attenuation ability of cylindrical blocks(by flow obstruction),a drastic attenuation in shock strength can be achieved with moderate level of flow blocking.

Understanding the near boundary acoustic oscillation of microbubbles is critical for the effective design of ultrasonic biomedical devices and surface cleaning ***,this study investigates the three-dimensional microbubble oscillation between two curved rigid plates experiencing a planar acoustic field using boundary integral method(BIM).The numerical model is validated via comparison with the nonlinear oscillation of the bubble governed by the modified Rayleigh-Plesset equation and with the axisymmetric model for an acoustic microbubble in infinite fluid ***,the influence of the wave direction and horizontal standoff distance(h)on the bubble dynamics(including jet velocity,jet direction,centroid movement,total energy,and kelvin impulse)were *** was concluded that the jet velocity,the maximum radius and the total energy of the bubble are not significantly influenced by the wave direction,while the jet direction and the high-pressure region depend strongly on *** importantly,it was found that the jet velocity and the high-pressure region around the jet in acoustic bubble are drastically larger than their counterparts in the gas bubble.

Are Environmental Vanguard Firms More Proactive Towards Environmental Conservation?An Empirical Study of Power Sector Firms in India

Environmental protection is a crucial issue for environmentalists and *** every stakeholder in the industrial production process of a product is concerned about the detrimental effects on the environment due to *** environmental regulations are in place,some firms across diverse industrial sectors are considered as the environmental vanguard,i.e.,leaders in environmental *** being environmental vanguard result in environmental proactivity?This paper,through an empirical study of Indian power sector firms,studies the environmental proactivity of the firms who are known to be leaders in the adoption of environmental protection norms.A questionnaire-based survey method is used to analyse the responses *** study uses 280 responses for the analysis of the *** hypotheses are proposed and tested statistically through Structural Equation Modelling(SEM).The statistical analysis reveals that the firms who are environmental vanguard are more proactive towards environmental *** findings of the study can be useful for the policymakers and environmental managers in the formulation of policies which can be considered as a benchmark for the firms for the protection of the environment.

Origin of Red Color of the Lower Siwalik Palaeosols:A Micromorphological Approach

Palaeosols of the Siwalik Group are associated with fluvial and lacustrine deposits that occur as thick multiple pedocomplexes. The bright red color of the palaeosol beds has been earlier interpreted as a result of hot and arid palaeoclimate. However, as against this view, our investigations of the bright red palaeosol beds of the Lower Siwaliks suggest that the climate was cool and subhumid, instead of hot and arid during the deposition of these beds. Since cold climate is not very conducive to impart red coloration, further research is needed to explain the cause of these red beds. For this, the micromorphological study of soil thin sections was done which showed the presence of features such as dissolution and recrystallisation of quartz, feldspar and mica, compaction, slickensides, presence of calcite spars, subrounded and cracked nature of quartz grains, microfabric, complex patterns of birefringence fabrics, pigmentary ferric oxides, thick cutans and cementation by calcite. These features indicate that diagenesis took place on a large scale in these sediments. The positive Eh and neutral-alkaline pH of soils also suggest that the conditions were favorable for the formation of diagenetic red beds. During burial diagenesis of sediments, the hydroxides of ferromagnesian minerals got converted into ferric oxide minerals (hematite). During deep burial diagenesis smectite was converted into illite and the preponderance of illite over smectite with increasing depth of burial also indicates the diagenesis of sediments. Thus, the red color of the Lower Siwalik palaeosols seems to be due mainly to the burial diagenesis of sediments and does not appear to be due to the then prevailing climatic condition.

Comparative study between intramedullary interlocking nailing and minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis for distal tibia extra-articular fractures

Purpose:Treatment of distal tibia fractures poses significant challenge to orthopedic surgeon because of poor blood supply and paucity of soft tissue *** is considerable controversy regarding the superior option of treatment for distal tibia fracture between the minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis(MIPPO)technique and intramedullary interlocking(IMIL)nailing for extra-articular distal tibia *** aim of our study is to compare the functional outcome between the two treatment ***:This was the prospective comparative study of 100 patients with distal third tibia fractures divided into two *** first group of patients were treated with MIPPO technique while the second group of patients were managed by IMIL *** were followed up in outpatient department to assess the functional outcomes,malunion,delayed union,nonunion,superficial and deep infection between the two *** analyses were performed using the SPSS software(version 16.0).Results:Average malunion(degrees)in the MIPPO group was 5(3—7)±1.41 vs.10.22(8—14)±2.04 in the IMIL group(p=0.001).Similarly postoperative knee pain in the IMIL group was 10%vs.2%in the MIPPO group(p=0.001).In terms of superficial infection and nonunion,the results were 8%vs.4%and 2%vs.6%for the MIPPO and IMIL group,respectively(p=0.001).Conclusion:Both procedures have shown the reliable method of fixation for distal extra-articular tibia fractures preserving the soft tissue,bony vascularity and fracture hematoma that provide a favourable biological environment for fracture *** the results of the study,we have slightly more preference for the MIPPO technique.

Upshots of health education among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A field study in Mysuru

Objective:This study was conducted to assess the impact of health education on lifestyle modification and disease status of diabetic patients for 6 months in rural Mysuru in Southern *** and Methods:A quasi-experimental study was conducted among 104 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in rural Mysuru,India from July to December *** were assigned to two groups:intervention(n=52)and control(n=52),and their data were *** intervention group was educated about the disease and its management and was given printed pamphlets containing information to be followed,whereas the participants in the control group were asked to continue their routine health *** body mass index(BMI),weight,fasting blood sugar(FBS),knowledge about the disease,and behavior changes were recorded and compared between the two groups before and after 6 ***:The mean FBS value,BMI and weight decreased significantly in the intervention group after 6 months(FBS:164.79±47.59 mg/dL vs.141.92±25.63 mg/dL,Pkg/m2 vs.22.62±3.29 kg/m2,Pkg vs.61.54±10.67 kg,Pknowledge scores also improved postintervention which was statistically significant with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test(Pke it easier to plan studies on people with diabetes mellitus in various settings.

MATHEMATICAL DESCRIPTION OF GROWTH OF MULTIPLE ROOT BRANCHING STRUCTURE IN A PLANT

An existing growth model of Edelstien is extended and modified for multiple root branching structure or root hairs of any plant. Numerical and analytical solutions for the model are developed and compared. In the derivation it is assumed that multiple root branches are attached to the root surface that acts as a continuous source of new tips. The numerical scheme is derived with anticipation of the fact that comparison with experimental data may necessitate a more complicated model.
