Contaminated open fracture and crush injury: a murine model

Modern warfare has caused a large number of severe extremity injuries, many of which become infected. In more recent conflicts, a pattern of co-infection with Acinetobacter baumannii and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus has emerged. we attempted to recreate this pattern in an animal model to evaluate the role of vascularity in contaminated open fractures. Historically, it has been observed that infected bones frequently appear hypovascular, but vascularity in association with bone infection has not been examined in animal models. Adult rats underwent femur fracture and muscle crush injury followed by stabilization and bacterial contamination with A. baumannii complex and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus *** and perfusion were assessed by micro CT angiography and sPECT scanning, respectively, at 1, 2 and 4 weeks after injury. Quantitative bacterial cultures were also obtained. Multi-bacterial infections were successfully created, with methicillin-resistant s. aureus predominating. There was overall increase in blood flow to injured limbs that was markedly greater in bacteria-inoculated limbs. Vessel volume was greater in the infected group. Quadriceps atrophy was seen in both groups, but was greater in the infected group. In this animal model, infected open fractures had greater perfusion and vascularity than non-infected limbs.

with the goal of accelerating the design and discovery of metal–organic frameworks(MOFs)for electronic,optoelectronic,and energy storage applications,we present a dataset of predicted electronic structure properties for thousands of MOFs carried out using multiple density functional *** to more accurate hybrid functionals,we find that the widely used PBE generalized gradient approximation(GGA)functional severely underpredicts MOF band gaps in a largely systematic manner for semi-conductors and insulators without magnetic ***,an even larger and less predictable disparity in the band gap prediction is present for MOFs with open-shell 3d transition metal *** regards to partial atomic charges,we find that different density functional approximations predict similar charges overall,although hybrid functionals tend to shift electron density away from the metal centers and onto the ligand environments compared to the GGA point of *** more significant differences in partial atomic charges are observed when comparing different charge partitioning *** conclude by using the dataset of computed MOF properties to train machine-learning models that can rapidly predict MOF band gaps for all four density functional approximations considered in this.w.rk,paving the way for future high-throughput screening *** encourage exploration and reuse of the theoretical calculations presented in this.w.rk,the curated data is made publicly available via an interactive and user-friendly web application on the Materials Project.

The severe shortfall in testing supplies during the initial COVID-19 outbreak and ensuing struggle to manage the pandemic have affirmed the critical importance of optimal supplyconstrained resource allocation strategies for controlling novel disease *** address the challenge of constrained resource optimization for managing diseases with complications like pre-and asymptomatic transmission,we develop an integro partial differential equation compartmental disease model which incorporates realistic latent,incubation,and infectious period distributions along with limited testing supplies for identifying and quarantining infected *** model overcomes the limitations of typical ordinary differential equation compartmental models by decoupling symptom status from model compartments to allow a more realistic representation of symptom onset and presymptomatic *** analyze the influence of these realistic features on disease controllability,we find optimal strategies for reducing total infection sizes that allocate limited testing resources between‘clinical’testing,which targets symptomatic individuals,and‘non-clinical’testing,which targets non-symptomatic *** apply our model not only to the original,delta,and omicron COVID-19 variants,but also to generically parameterized disease systems with varying mismatches between latent and incubation period distributions,which permit varying degrees of presymptomatic transmission or symptom onset before *** find that factors that decrease controllability generally call for reduced levels of non-clinical testing in optimal strategies,while the relationship between incubation-latent mismatch,controllability,and optimal strategies is *** particular,though greater degrees of presymptomatic transmission reduce disease controllability,they may increase or decrease the role of nonclinical testing in optimal strategies depending on other disease factors like transmissibility

This paper is an adaptation of a presentation given on March 20, 2015, at the Conference on International Development hosted by Virginia International University. The paper reviews the December 2013 outbreak of civil war in south sudan, and attempts to untangle the country＇s pre-existing development problems from those more directly related to the war. Finally, the paper discusses international involvement both in south sudan＇s development and conflict resolution. It focuses in particular on the international debate over methods to end the conflict, the importance of state capacity, and the international understanding of development＇s relationship with the conflict.

Here,we report the effect of an 8 T magnetic field on the microstructure and properties of a reetangular Bi_2sr_2CaCu2Ox/AgMg(Bi2212/AgMg) conductor with low aspect *** magnetic field was applied during split melt process with the field direction perpendicular and parallel to the wide surface of the *** heat treatment, the conductors were electrically characterized using four-point critical current measurements as a function of magnetic field and magnetic field orientation relative to the *** superconducting transition and magnetization hysteresis were measured using a sQUID *** microstructure was characterized using scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the presence of magnetic field during split melt processing enhances the electrical transport and magnetic *** magnetic field increases the Bi2212 grains alignment and long range texture within filaments and bridges between filaments by textured growth of Bi2212 phase.
