Percutaneous closure of secundum type atrial septal defects:more than 5-year follow-up

AIm: To investigate long-term efficacy of two different devices more than five years after percutaneous atrial septal defect(ASD) closure in ***: All patients who underwent percutaneous closure of an ASD in the St. Antonius Hospital, Nieuwegein, The Netherlands, between February 1998 and December 2006 were included. Percutaneous closure took place under general anaesthesia and transesophageal echocardiographic moni toring. Transthoracic echocardiography(TTE) was performed 24 h post-procedure to visualize the device position and to look for residual shunting using color Doppler. All complications were registered. All patients were invited for an outpatient visit and contrast TTE more than 5-years after closure. Efficacy was based on the presence of a residual right-to-left shunt(RLS), graded as minimal, moderate or severe. The presence of a residual left-to-right shunt(LRS) was diagnosed using color Doppler, and was not graded. Descriptive statistics were used for patients' characteristics. Univariate analysis was used to identify predictors for residual ***: In total, 104 patients(mean age 45.5 ± 17.1 years) underwent percutaneous ASD closure using an Amplatzer device(ASO) in 76 patients and a Cardioseal/Starflex device(CS/SF) in 28 patients. The mean follow-up was 6.4 ± 3.4 years. Device migration occurred in 4 patients of whom two cases occurred during the index hospitalization(1 ASO, 1 CS/SF). The other 2 cases of device migration occurred during the first 6 mo of follow-up(2 CS/SF). The recurrent thrombo-embolic event rate was similar in both groups: 0.4% per follow-up year. more than 12 mo post-ASD closure and latest follow-up, new-onset supraventricular tachyarrhythmia's occurred in 3.9% and 0% for the ASO and CS/SF group, respectively. The RLS rate at latest follow-up was 17.4%(minimal 10.9%, moderate 2.2%, severe 4.3%) and 45.5%(minimal 27.3%, moderate 18.2%, severe 0%) for the ASO- and CS/SF groups, respectively. A CALCULUS FOR SERVICES INNOVATION

Innovation in the services area - especially in the electronic services （e-services） domain - can be systematically developed by first considering the strategic drivers and foci, then the tactical principles and enablers, and finally the operational decision attributes, all of which constitute a process or calculus of services innovation. more specifically, there are four customer drivers （i.e., collaboration, customization, integration and adaptation）, three business foci （i.e., creation-focused, solution-focused and competition-focused）, six business principles （i.e., reconstruct market boundaries, focus on the big picture not numbers, reach beyond existing demand, get strategic sequence right, overcome organizational hurdles and build execution into strategy）, eight technical enablers （i.e., software algorithms, automation, telecommunication, collaboration, standardization, customization, organization, and globalization）, and six attributes of decision informatics （i.e., decision-driven, information-based, real-time, continuously-adaptive, customer-centric and computationally-intensive）. It should be noted that the four customer drivers are all directed at empowering the individual - that is, at recognizing that the individual can, respectively, contribute in a collaborative situation, receive customized or personalized attention, access an integrated system or process, and obtain adaptive real-time or just-in-time input. The developed process or calculus serves to identify the potential white spaces or blue oceans for innovation. In addition to expanding on current innovations in services and related experiences, white spaces are identified for possible future innovations; they include those that can mitigate the unforeseen consequences or abuses of earlier innovations, safeguard our rights to privacy, protect us from the always-on, interconnected world, provide us with an authoritative search engine, and generate a GDP metric that can adequately measure the gro

The importance of the services sector can not be overstated; it employs 82.1 percent of the U. S. workforce and 69 percent of graduates from an example technological university. Yet, university research and education have not followed suit. Clearly, services research and education deserve our critical attention and support since services - and services innovation - serve as an indispensable engine for global economic growth. The theme of this paper is that we can and should build services research and education on what has occurred in manufacturing research （especially in regard to customization and intellectual property） and education; indeed, services and manufactured goods become indistinguishable as they are jointly co-produced in real-time. Fortunately, inasmuch as manufacturing concepts, methodologies and technologies have been developed and refined over a long period of time （i.e., since the 1800s）, the complementary set of concepts, methodologies and technologies for services are more obvious. However, while new technologies （e.g., the Internet） and globalization trends have served to enable, if not facilitate, services innovation, the same technologies （e.g., the Internet） and 21st Century realities （e.g., terrorism） are making services innovation a far more complex problem and, in fact, may be undermining previous innovations in both services and manufacturing. Finally, there is a need to define a ＂knowledge-adjusted＂ GDP metric that can more adequately measure the growing knowledge economy, one driven by intangible ideas and services innovation.

A case is made for further developing a branch of systems engineering that focuses on problems and issues which arise in the service sector. We promulgate this special focus not only because of the size and importance of the service sector but also because of the unique opportunities that systems engineering can exploit in the design and joint production and delivery of services. We begin by considering the economic, technological and demographic contexts within which the service sector has flourished; we then address both services, especially emerging services, and systems engineering, followed by a discussion of how to advance the field of service systems engineering, and concluding with several remarks. In particular, a number of service systems engineering methods are identified to enhance the design and production/delivery of services, especially taking advantage of the unique features that characterize services - namely, services, especially emerging services, are information-driven, customer-centric, e-oriented, and productivity-focused.

Functionalized monodisperse microbubbles have the potential to boost the sensitivity and efficacy of molecular ultrasound imaging and targeted drug delivery using bubbles and *** bubbles can be produced in a microfluidic flow focusing ***,their functionalization and sequential use require removal of the excess lipids from the bubble suspension to minimize the use of expensive ligands and to avoid competitive binding and blocking of the receptor *** date,excess lipid removal is performed by centrifugation,which is labor intensive and challenging to *** importantly,as we show,the increased hydrostatic pressure during centrifugation can reduce bubble ***,we introduce a novel automated microfluidic’washing’***,bubbles are injected in a microfluidic chamber 1mm in height where they are left to float against the top ***,lipid-free medium is pumped through the chamber to remove excess lipids while the bubbles remain located at the top ***,the washed bubbles are resuspended and removed from the device into a collection *** demonstrate that the present method can(i)reduce the excess lipid concentration by 4 orders of magnitude,(ii)be fully automated,and(iii)be performed in minutes while the size distribution,functionality,and acoustic response of the bubbles remain ***,the presented method is a gateway to the fully automated production of functionalized monodisperse microbubbles.

Unsupervised learning of charge-discharge cycles from various lithium-ion battery cells to visualize dataset characteristics and to interpret model performance

machine learning (mL) is a rapidly growing tool even in the lithium-ion battery (LIB) research field. To utilize this tool, more and more datasets have been published. However, applicability of a mL model to different information sources or various LIB cell types has not been well studied. In this paper, an unsupervised learning model called variational autoencoder (VAE) is evaluated with three datasets of charge-discharge cycles with different conditions. The model was first trained with a publicly available dataset of commercial cylindrical cells, and then evaluated with our private datasets of commercial pouch and hand-made coin cells. These cells used different chemistry and were tested with different cycle testers under different purposes, which induces various characteristics to each dataset. We report that researchers can recognise these characteristics with VAE to plan a proper data preprocessing. We also discuss about interpretability of a mL model.

Arabidopsis Extra Large G-Protein 2 （XLG2） Interacts with the Gβ Subunit of Heterotrimeric G Protein and Functions in Disease Resistance

Heterotrimeric GTP-binding proteins, which consist of Gα, Gβ, and Gγ subunits, play important roles in transducing extracellular signals perceived by cell surface receptors into intracellular physiological responses. In addition to a single prototypical Gα protein （GPA1）, Arabidopsis has three unique Gα-Iike proteins, known as XLG1, XLG2, and XLG3, that have been found to be localized in nuclei, although their functions and mode of action remain largely unknown. Through a transcriptomic analysis, we found that XLG2 and XLG3 were rapidly induced by infection with the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae, whereas the XLG1 transcript level was not affected by pathogen infection. A reverse genetic screen revealed that the xlg2 loss-of-function mutation causes enhanced susceptibility to P. syringae. Transcriptome profiling revealed that the xlg2 mutation affects pathogen-triggered induction of a small set of defense-related genes. However, xlgl and xlg3 mutants showed no difference from wild-type plants in resistance to P. syringae, In addition, the xlg2 xlg3 double mutant and the xlgl xlg2 xlg3 triple mutant were not significantly different from the xlg2 single mutant in the disease resistance phenotype, suggesting that the roles of XLG1 and XLG3 in defense, if any, are less significant than for XLG2. Constitutive overexpression of XLG2 leads to the accumulation of abnormal transcripts from multiple defense-related genes. Through co-immunoprecipitation assays, XLG2 was found to interact with AGB1, the sole Gβ subunit in Arabidopsis, which has previously been found to be a positive regulator in resistance to necrotrophic fungal pathogens. However, no significant difference was found between three xlg single mutants, the xlg2 xlg3 double mutant, the xlgtriple mutant, and wild-type plants in resistance to the necrotrophic fungal pathogens Botrytis cinerea or Alternaria brassicicola. Impact of hospital type on risk-adjusted,traffic-related 30-day mortality:a population-based registry study

The particles of heterogeneous catalysts differ greatly in size,morphology,and most importantly,in *** these catalyst particles in batch typically results in ensemble averages,without any information at the level of individual catalyst *** date,the study of individual catalyst particles has been rewarding but is stll rather slow and often ***,these valuable in-depth studies at the single particle level lack statistical ***,we report the development of a droplet microreactor for high-throughput fluorescence-based measurements of the acidities of individual particles in fluid catalytic cracking(FCC)equilibrium catalysts(ECAT).This method combines systematic screening of single catalyst particles with statistical *** oligomerization reaction of 4-methoxystyrene,catalyzed by the Bronsted acid sites inside the zeolite domains of the ECAT particles,Was performed on-chip at 95 ℃.The fluorescence signal generated by the reaction products inside the ECAT particles was detected near the outlet of the *** high-throughput acidity screening platform was capable of detecting~1000 catalyst particles at a rate of 1 catalyst particle every 2.4 *** number of detected catalyst particles was representative of the overall catalyst particle population with a confidence level of 95%.The measured fluorescence intensities showed a clear acidity distribution among the catalyst particles,with the majority(96.1%)showing acidity levels belonging to old,deactivated catalyst particles and a minority(3.9%)exhibiting high acidity *** latter are potentially of high interest,as they reveal interesting new physicochemical properties indicating why the particles were still highly acidic and reactive.

An epidemiological study of collagenous colitis in southern Sweden from 2001-2010

AIm： To estimate the incidence of collagenous colitis （CC） in southern Sweden during 2001-2010. mETHODS： Cases were identified by searching for CC in the diagnostic registers at the Pathology Departments in the county of Skane. The catchment area comprised the south-west part of the county （394 307 inhabitants in 2010） and is a mixed urban and rural type with limited migration. CC patients that had under- gone colonoscopy during the defined period and were living in this area were included in the study regardless of where in Skane they had been diagnosed. medical records were scrutinized and uncertain cases were re- assessed to ensure that only newly diagnosed CC cases were included. The diagnosis of CC was based on both clinical and histopathological criteria. The clinical crite-rion was non-bloody watery diarrhoea. The histopatho- logical criteria were a chronic inflammatory infiltrate in the lamina propria, a thickened subepithelial collagen layer ≥10 micrometers （um） and epithelial damage such as flattening and detachment. RESULTS： During the ten year period from 2001-2010, 198 CC patients in the south-west part of the county of Skane in southern Sweden were newly diagnosed. Of these, 146 were women and 52 were men, i.e., a female： male ratio of 2.8：1. The median age at diag- nosis was 71 years （range 28-95/inter-quartile range 59-81）, for women median age was 71 （range 28-95） years and was 73 （range 48-92） years for men. The mean annual incidence was 5.4/105 inhabitants. During the time periods 2001-2005 and 2006-2010, the mean annual incidence rates were 5.4/105 for both periods [95% confidence interval （CI）： 4.3-6.5 in 2001-2005 and 4.4-6.4 in 2006-2010, respectively, and 4.7-6.2 for the whole period]. Although the incidence varied over the years （minimum 3.7 to maximum 6.7/105） no increase or decrease in the incidence could be identi- fied.
