Indoor distribution and personal exposure of cooking-generated PM2.5 in rural residences of China:A multizone model study

The fine particulate matter(PM2.5)emitted during cooking is a significant contributor to household air pollution in rural China,resulting in millions of premature deaths annually.Since cooking is an internal pollution source,the indoor concentration of cooking-generated PM2.5 can vary among different rooms in multizone rural residences.This study provides a comprehensive understanding of indoor PM2.5 from cooking in rural residences by utilizing on-site investigations to gather information on cooking behavior and dwelling layout in three Chinese villages,and subsequently simulating indoor spatiotemporal concentrations of cooking-generated PM2.5 using a multizone model.Our findings indicate that the type of zone significantly influences the zonal concentration of PM2.5,with the highest concentrations found in kitchens(i.e.,13.9 to 188.0μg/m3)and lowest in non-adjacent zones to the kitchen(i.e.,0.01 to 7.5μg/m3)among all the modeled conditions.More importantly,the study also assesses the resulting personal exposures for occupants with different time-spent patterns,revealing that the main cook at home and preferring to stay in the adjacent rooms to the kitchen are at the highest risk for personal exposure.The highest personal exposure levels of cooking-generated PM2.5 are 28.5±30.1μg/m3,which is 34 times that of occupants who stay away from the kitchen.The study provides a deeper scientific insight into the indoor spatial distribution and personal exposure to cooking-generated PM2.5 in rural residences,which is crucial for developing effective interventions to mitigate the detrimental health impacts of household air pollution in rural areas.

Background:Hypertrophy of the ligamentumﬂavum(HLF)is a common contributor to spinal stenosis which results in signiﬁcant neurological impairments.Circular RNA(circRNA)circ_0003609 has been linked to HLF;however,the exact mechanism by which it causes this disease is unclear.Methods:Circ_0003609 expressions were regulated in HLF cells by overexpression vectors and RNA interference.Cell proliferation andﬁbrosis-related gene expression were checked by the Cell Counting Kit-8(CCK-8)assay and western blotting.CircBank’s prediction of the association between miR-155 and circ_0003609 was supported by a dual-luciferase reporter experiment.The function of the miR-155/sirtuin 1(SIRT1)axis in controlling HLFﬁbrosis was further examined.Results:Overexpression of circ_0003609 suppressed HLF cell propagation andﬁbrosis compared to its silencing.It was found that circ_0003609 served as the sponge for miR-155 and that the circ_0003609/miR-155 axis controlled theﬁbrosis of HLF cells.It was found that circ_0003609 acted as a sponge for miR-155,regulating theﬁbrosis of HLF cells.Further,miR-155 targets SIRT1,and the miR-155/SIRT1 axis promotes HLF cellﬁbrosis.Conclusion:Circ_0003609 ameliorates hypertrophied ligamentumﬂavum(LF)by modulating the miR-155/SIRT1 axis,indicating a potential treatment approach for HLF.

The exponentially increasing heat generation in electronic devices,induced by high power density and miniaturization,has become a dominant issue that affects carbon footprint,cost,performance,reliability,and lifespan.Liquid metals(LMs)with high thermal conductivity are promising candidates for effective thermal management yet are facing pump-out and surface-spreading issues.Confinement in the form of metallic particles can address these problems,but apparent alloying processes elevate the LM melting point,leading to severely deteriorated stability.Here,we propose a facile and sustainable approach to address these challenges by using a biogenic supramolecular network as an effective diffusion barrier at copper particle-LM(EGaIn/Cu@TA)interfaces to achieve superior thermal conduction.The supramolecular network promotes LM stability by reducing unfavorable alloying and fluidity transition.The EGaIn/Cu@TA exhibits a record-high metallic-mediated thermal conductivity(66.1 W m^(-1) K^(-1))and fluidic stability.Moreover,mechanistic studies suggest the enhanced heat flow path after the incorporation of copper particles,generating heat dissipation suitable for computer central processing units,exceeding that of commercial silicone.Our results highlight the prospects of renewable macromolecules isolated from biomass for the rational design of nanointerfaces based on metallic particles and LM,paving a new and sustainable avenue for high-performance thermal management.

Soil health is an important component of“One Health”.Soils provide habitat to diverse and abundant organisms.Understanding microbial diversity and functions is essential for building healthy soils towards sustainable agriculture.Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)form potentially symbiotic associations with approximately 80%of land plant species that are well recognized for carbon flux and nutrient cycling.In addition to disentangling the signaling pathways and regulatory mechanisms between the two partners,recent advances in hyphosphere research highlight some emerging roles of AMF and associated microbes in the delivery of soil functions.This paper reviews the contribution of AMF to soil health in agroecosystems,with a major focus on recent progress in the contribution of hyphosphere microbiome to nutrient cycling,carbon sequestration,and soil aggregation.The hyphosphere microbiome and fungal stimulants open avenues for developing new fertilizer formulas to promote AMF benefits.In practice,developing AMF-friendly management strategies will have long-term positive effects on sustainable agriculture aiming at simultaneously providing food security,increasing resource use efficiency,and maintaining environment integrity.

Complete blood and urine paraprotein tests as response assessments in multiple myeloma patients treated with bortezomib,cyclophosphamide,and dexamethasone

Background: This study assessed the effect of standardized efficacy markers on prognosis in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma(MM)during the induction phase of treatment with bortezomib,cyclophosphamide,and dexamethasone(BCD).Methods :We retrospectively analyzed clinical data in 197 newly diagnosed MM patients treated with BCD as front-line regimen at Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 1,2013 to December 31,2018.Results: There were 107 patients with International Staging System(ISS)III and 51 with paraprotein of light chain.Of these,77 completed nine cycles of the BCD regimen.As the number of treatment cycles increased,the proportions of serum and urine immunofixation electrophoresis(IFE)tests elevated from 40.39%to 62.22%and 16.75%to 37.78%,respectively.More than 90%of intact immunoglobulin chain MM patients were evaluated for blood M protein per cycle,but that of urinary M protein was less than 60%.The detection rate of urinary M protein in light chain MM was more than 70%per cycle.Patients with a very good partial response(VGPR)had longer progression-free survival(PFS)than those with uncertain VGPR(32 vs.26 months,p=0.0336).Of the 141 patients who completed at least four cycles without undergoing autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation,those who were regularly assessed at every other cycle showed more favorable PFS than those who visited irregularly(27 vs.22 months,p=0.059).Conclusion: Urinary M protein detection rate is significantly lower than that in serum,leading to an overestimation of efficacy,premature reduction of treatment intensity,and shortened PFS.Precise response assessments are critical to treatment decisions and clinical diagnoses.

Compound Shenhua Tablet,a medicine comprising seven herbs,is employed in treating IgA nephropathy.This study aimed to meticulously analyze its chemical composition.Based on a list of candidate compounds,identified through extensive literature review pertinent to the tablet’s herbal components,the composition analysis entailed the systematic identification,characterization,and quantification of the constituents.The analyte-capacity of LC/ESI-MS-based and GC/EI-MS-based assays was evaluated.The identified and characterized constituents were quantified to determine their content levels and were ranked based on the constituents’daily doses.A total of 283 constituents,classified into 12 distinct categories,were identified and characterized in the Compound Shenhua Tablet.These constituents exhibited content levels of 1−10982μg·g^(−1),with daily doses of 0.01−395μmol·d^(−1).The predominant constituents,with daily doses of≥10μmol·d^(−1),include nine organic acids(citric acid,quinic acid,chlorogenic acid,cryptochlorogenic acid,gallic acid,neochlorogenic acid,isochlorogenic acid C,isochlorogenic acid B,and linoleic acid),five iridoids(specnuezhenide,nuezhenoside G13,nuezhenidic acid,secoxyloganin,and secologanoside),two monoterpene glycosides(paeoniflorin and albiflorin),a sesquiterpenoid(curzerenone),a triterpenoid(oleanolic acid),and a phenylethanoid(salidroside).Additionally,there were 83,126,and 55 constituents detected in the medicine with daily doses of 1–10,0.1–1,and 0.01–0.1μmol·d^(−1),respectively.The combination of the LC/ESI-MS-based and GC/EI-MS-based assays demonstrated a complementary relationship in their analyte-capacity for detecting the constituents present in the medicine.This comprehensive composition analysis establishes a solid foundation for further pharmacological research on Compound Shenhua Tablet and facilitates the quality evaluation of this complex herbal medicine.

Gauss Principle of Least Compulsion for Relative Motion Dynamics and Differential Equations of Motion

This paper focuses on Gauss principle of least compulsion for relative motion dynamics and derives differential equations of motion from it. Firstly, starting from the dynamic equation of the relative motion of particles, we give the Gauss principle of relative motion dynamics. By constructing a compulsion function of relative motion, we prove that at any instant, its real motion minimizes the compulsion function under Gaussian variation, compared with the possible motions with the same configuration and velocity but different accelerations. Secondly, the formula of acceleration energy and the formula of compulsion function for relative motion are derived because the carried body is rigid and moving in a plane. Thirdly, the Gauss principle we obtained is expressed as Appell, Lagrange, and Nielsen forms in generalized coordinates. Utilizing Gauss principle, the dynamical equations of relative motion are established. Finally, two relative motion examples also verify the results' correctness.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a fatal disorder characterized by pulmonary vascular remodeling and obstruction. The phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) family hydrolyzes cyclic AMP (cAMP) and is comprised of four subtypes (PDE4A–D). Previous studies have shown the beneficial effects of pan-PDE4 inhibitors in rodent PH;however, this class of drugs is associated with side effects owing to the broad inhibition of all four PDE4 isozymes. Here, we demonstrate that PDE4B is the predominant PDE isozyme in lungs and that it was upregulated in rodent and human PH lung tissues. We also confirmed that PDE4B is mainly expressed in the lung endothelial cells (ECs). Evaluation of PH in Pde4b wild type and knockout mice confirmed that Pde4b is important for the vascular remodeling associated with PH. In vivo EC lineage tracing demonstrated that Pde4b induces PH development by driving endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT), and mechanistic studies showed that Pde4b regulates EndMT by antagonizing the cAMP-dependent PKA–CREB–BMPRII axis. Finally, treating PH rats with a PDE4B-specific inhibitor validated that PDE4B inhibition has a significant pharmacological effect in the alleviation of PH. Collectively, our findings indicate a critical role for PDE4B in EndMT and PH, prompting further studies of PDE4B-specific inhibitors as a therapeutic strategy for PH.

Kinetic and mechanism of the reaction between Cl and several mono-methyl branched alkanes

Branched alkanes are ubiquitous in the troposphere and play an important role in the chemical processes.In this work,the rate constants and products for the reaction of Cl atoms with 3-methylhexane and 2-methylheptane were measured at room temperature(298±0.2K)and atmospheric pressure using a conventional relative rate method.The rate constants of 3-methylhexane and 2-methylheptane in units of cm~3/(mol·sec)are(3.09±0.31)×10^(-10)and(3.67±0.40)×10^(-10),respectively.Furthermore,the corresponding atmospheric lifetime of the studied branched alkanes with Cl was 6.92-89.90 hours and 5.82-75.69 hours,respectively.The estimated atmospheric lifetimes indicated that the reaction with Cl atoms could be the most important atmospheric degradation pathway for 3-methylhexane and2-methylheptane.Primary gas-phase products of the reactions were identified and quantified,and particle-phase products were also obtained.The atmosphere oxidation mechanism of Cl atoms with 3-methylhexane and 2-methylheptane is proposed.The SOA yields of 3-methylhexane and 2-methylheptane from the reaction of Cl atoms were determined to be7.96%±0.89%and 13.35%±1.50%respectively.Overall,the results reveal that the primary loss process of branched alkanes is the reaction with Cl atoms,which impacts its degradation on a regional scale.
