BACKGROUND Ligamentum flavum cysts,which are most common in mobile junctional levels of the spine,can be a rare cause of spinal *** have been several case reports of ligamentum flavum ***,there is yet to be a documented case report of a calcified ligamentum flavum ***,we report the first case of a calcified ligamentum flavum cyst causing ankle and toe *** SUMMARY A 66-year-old male visited our hospital complaining of claudication as well as thigh and calf pain in his left leg,all beginning two weeks *** examination revealed motor weakness of the left ankle dorsiflexion and great toe *** spinal computed tomography scans showed spinal stenosis combined with a calcified mass at the left side of the L4-5 *** reso-nance imaging showed dural sac compression caused by the calcified mass at the left ligamentum flavum of the L4-5 *** performed decompressive laminectomy and excision of the calcified mass combined with posterior lumbar interbody fusion at the L4-5 ***-operatively,we found a firm and nodule like mass originating from the ventral surface of ligamentum *** examination suggested a calcified pseudocyst without a capsular *** the operation,the patient’s motor weakness in the ankle and great toe improved *** The patient’s ankle and great toe weakness were improved successfully after surgical removal of the calcified cyst.

A strategy for fabricating microcrystalline cellulose–Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)(MCC–MXene)nanocomposite films with high relative permittivity,high thermal conductivity,and excellent mechanical properties was *** MCC–MXene nanocomposite film was fabricated by casting a solution containing N,N-dimethylacetamide/lithium chloride(DMAc/LiCl)-soluble MCC and DMAcdispersible MXene nanosheets,followed by humidity control *** MXene nanosheets greatly enhanced the permittivity of the nanocomposite films owing to interfacial ***,the nanocomposite film with 20 wt.%MXene content achieved a desirable permittivity of 71.4 at 102 Hz(a 770%improvement against that of neat cellulose),while the dielectric loss only increased by 1.8 times(from 0.39 to 0.70).The obtained nanocomposite films with 20 wt.%and 30 wt.%MXene exhibited remarkable in-plane thermal conductivities of 8.523 and 9.668 W∙m^(−1)∙K^(−1),respectively,owing to the uniform dispersion and selfalignment of the MXene layered ***,the uniformly dispersed MXene nanosheets in the MCC network with interfacial interaction(hydrogen bonding)and mechanical entanglement endowed the nanocomposite films with excellent mechanical properties and ***,the thermal stability,water resistance,and antibacterial properties of the nanocomposite films were effectively improved with the introduction of ***,using DMAc/LiCl as the solvent system not only improves the compatibility between MCC and MXene but also avoids the problem of easy oxidation of MXene in aqueous *** the high stability of the MCC–MXene solution and enhanced properties of the MCC–MXene films,the proposed strategy manifests great potential for fabricating natural biomass-based dielectric materials.

Molecular aggregates are receiving tremendous attention,demonstrating immense potential for biomedical applications in vitro and in *** instance,the molecular aggregates of conventional fluorophores influence the electronic excitation states of the aggregates,causing characteristic photophysical property changes.A fundamental understanding of this classical relationship between molecular aggregate structures and photophysics has allowed for innovative biological *** chemical characteristics of drug molecules generally trigger the formation of colloidal aggregates,and this is considered detrimental to the drug discovery ***,nano-sized supramolecular aggregates have been used in biomedical imaging and therapy owing to their optimal properties for in vivo utility,including enhanced cell permeability,passive tumor targeting,and convenient surface ***,we provide an overview of the recent trends in molecular aggregates for biomedical *** changes in photophysical properties of conventional fluorophores and their biological applications are discussed,followed by the effects of conventional drug molecule-aggregates on drug discovery and therapeutics *** trends in the investigation of biologically important analytes with aggregation-induced emission are discussed for conventional and unconventional ***,we discuss nano-sized supramolecular aggregates used in imaging and therapeutic purposes,with a focus on in vivo utilization.

Colonoscopy evaluation after short-term anti-tuberculosis treatment in nonspecific ulcers on the ileocecal area

AIM: To evaluate the eff icacy of colonoscopy follow-up after short-term anti-tuberculosis treatment in patients with nonspecific ulcers on ileocecal areas being suspicious of tuberculous colitis. METHODS: We prospectively analyzed the colonoscopic fi ndings before and after short term anti- tuberculosis treatment in 18 patients with nonspecifi c ulcers on the ileocecal area and compared them with 7 patients of confi rmed tuberculous colitis by acid-fast bacilli or caseating granuloma on colonic biopsy. RESULTS: Mean duration for short-term follow- up was 107.3 d with combined chemotherapy containing isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol and pyrazinamide. Seven patients with tuberculous colitis showed complete healing of active ulcers after short- term medication. After short-term anti-tuberculosis treatment, follow-up colonoscopy findings devided 18 patients with nonspecific ulcers into two groups by ulcer state. One is the "suspicious tuberculous colitis group" showing healing of ulcers and erosions and another is the "suspicious inflammatory bowel disease group" showing active ulcers with or without aggravation of the lesion. Finally, all 9 of the "suspicious tuberculous colitis group" were diagnosed as tuberculous colitis showing no recurrence of ulcers after termination of 9 mo of anti-tuberculosis medication. Patients of the "suspicious inflammatorybowel disease group" were f inally diagnosed as Crohn's disease or nonspecifi c colonic ulcers during long-term follow up. CONCLUSION: Follow-up colonoscopy shows a healing stage ulcer or scarring change without an active ulcer with just 2 mo to 3 mo of medication in patients with tuberculous colitis. Colonoscopy follow-up after short term anti-tuberculosis trial in patients with nonspecif ic ulcers on the ileocecal area is valuable in making early differential diagnosis of tuberculous colitis.

Clinical implications of fatty pancreas:Correlations between fatty pancreas and metabolic syndrome

AIM:To investigate the clinical implications of lipid deposition in the pancreas(fatty pancreas). METHODS:The subjects of this study were 293 patients who had undergone abdominal computed tomography(CT)and *** pancreas was diagnosed by sonographic findings and subdivided into mild,moderate,and severe fatty pancreas groups comparing to the retroperitoneal fat echogenicity. RESULTS:Fatty pancreas was associated with higher levels for visceral fat,waist circumference,aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alanine aminotransferase (ALT),total cholesterol,triglyceride,high density lipoprotein,free fatty acid,γ-GTP,insulin,and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)than the control group(P<0.05).HOMAIR,visceral fat,triglyceride,and ALT also tended to increase with the degree of fat deposition in the pancreas on *** a multivariate logistic regression analysis,HOMA-IR,visceral fat,and ALT level were independently related to fatty pancreas after adjustment for age,body mass index,and lipid *** incidence of metabolic syndrome in the fatty pancreas group was significantly higher than in the control group,and the numbers of metabolic syndrome parameters were significantly higher in the fatty pancreas group(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Sonographic fatty pancrease showed higher insulin resistance,visceral fat area,triglyceride, and ALT levels than normal *** pancreas also showed a strong correlation with metabolic syndrome.

Many studies using diffusion tensor tractography（DTT） have demonstrated that injury of the spinothalamic tract（STT） is the pathogenetic mechanism of central post-stroke pain（CPSP） in intracerebral hemorrhage; however, there is no DTT study reporting the pathogenetic mechanism of CPSP in cerebral infarction. In this study, we investigated injury of the STT in patients with CPSP following cerebral infarction, using DTT. Five patients with CPSP following cerebral infarction and eight age-and sex-matched healthy control subjects were recruited for this study. STT was examined using DTT. Among DTT parameters of the affected STT, fractional anisotropy and tract volume were decreased by more than two standard deviations in two patients（patients 1 and 2） and three patients（patients 3, 4, and 5）, respectively, compared with those of the control subjects, while mean diffusivity value was increased by more than two standard deviations in one patient（patient 2）. Regarding DTT configuration, all affected STTs passed through adjacent part of the infarct and three STTs showed narrowing. These findings suggest that injury of the STT might be a pathogenetic etiology of CPSP in patients with cerebral infarction.

Fabrication of 3D Printed PCL/PEG Polyblend Scaffold Using Rapid Prototyping System for Bone Tissue Engineering Application

Three-dimensional （3D） printing is a novel process used to manufacture bone tissue engineered scaffolds. This process allows for easy control of the architecture at the micro structure. However, the scaffold properties are typically limited in terms of cellular activity at the scaffold surface due to the printed materials properties. In this study, we developed a polycaprolactone （PCL） blended with polyethylene glycol （PEG） 3D printed scaffold using a rapid prototyping system. The manufactured scaffolds were then washed out to form small pores on the surface in order to improve the scaffolds hydrophilicity. We analyzed the resultant material by using Scanning Electron Microscopy （SEM）, water absorption, water contact angle, in vitro WST-1, and the Bradford assay. Additionally, cells incubated on the fabricated scaffolds were visualized by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy （CLSM）. The developed scaffolds exhibited small pores on the strand surface which served to increase hydrophilicity as well as improve cellular proliferation and increase total protein content. Our findings suggest that the presence of small pores on the scaffolds can be used as an effective tool for improving implant cellular interaction. This research indicates that these modified scaffolds can be considered useful for bone tissue engineering applications to improve human health.
