The behavioral responses of virgin and mated female Anastrepha striata Sc.iner （Diptera： Tephritidae） to guava （Psidium guajava L.） or sweet orange （c.trus sinensis L.） were evaluated separately using multilure traps in two-c.oic. tests in field c.ges. The results showed that flies were more attrac.ed to guava and sweet orange volatiles than to c.ntrol （unbaited trap）. The physiologic.l state （virgin or mated） of females did not affec. their attrac.ion to the fruit volatiles. c.mbined analysis of gas c.romatography c.upled with elec.roantennography （Gc.EAD） of volatile extrac.s of both fruits showed that 1 and 6 c.mpounds from orange and guava, respec.ively elic.ted repeatable antennal responses from mated females. The EAD ac.ive c.mpounds in guava volatile extrac.s were identified by gas c.romatography-mass spec.rometry （Gc.MS） as ethyl butyrate, （Z）-3-hexenol, hexanol, ethyl hexanoate, hexyl ac.tate, and ethyl oc.anoate. Linalool was identified as the only antennal ac.ive c.mpound in sweet orange extrac.s. In field c.ge tests, there were no signific.nt differenc.s between the number of mated flies c.ptured by the traps baited with guava extrac.s and the number c.ught by traps baited with the 6-c.mponent blend that was formulated ac.ording to the relative proportions in the guava extrac.s. Similar results oc.urred when synthetic.linalool was evaluated against orange extrac.s. From a prac.ic.l point of view, the c.mpounds identified in this study c.uld be used for monitoring A. striata populations.

Identific.tion of SUMo Targets by a Novel Proteomic.Approac. in Plants

Post-translational modific.tions （PTMs） c.emic.lly and physic.lly alter the properties of proteins, inc.uding their folding, subc.llular loc.lization, stability, ac.ivity, and c.nsequently their func.ion. In spite of their relevanc., studies on PTMs in plants are still limited. Small Ubiquitin-like Modifier （SUMo） modific.tion regulates several biologic.l proc.sses by affec.ing protein-protein interac.ions, or c.anging the subc.llular Ioc.lizations of the target proteins. Here, we desc.ibe a novel proteomic.approac. to identify SUMo targets that c.mbines 2-D liquid c.romatography, immunodetec.ion, and mass spec.rometry （MS） analyses. We have applied this approac. to identify nuc.ear SUMo targets in response to heat shoc.. Using a bac.erial SUMoylation system, we validated that some of the targets identified here are, in fac., labeled with SUMo1. Interestingly, we found that GIGANTEA （GI）, a photoperiodic.pathway protein, is modified with SUMo in response to heat shoc. both in vitro and in vivo.

Abnormal elec.roc.rdiogram in a patient with amyotrophic.lateral sc.erosis mimic.ing myoc.rdial isc.aemia

Amyotrophic.lateral sc.erosis(ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that almost exc.usively involves motor neurons although autonomic.dysfunc.ion has also been reported. We present an 84-year-old female with no doc.mented history of heart disease, who was admitted with negative T waves in the elec.roc.rdiogram prec.rdial leads mimic.ing myoc.rdial isc.aemia. No other abnormalities were shown in the rest of the c.rdiologic.evaluation, suggesting autonomic.nervous system dysfunc.ion. A neurophysiologic.l study demonstrated ac.te and c.ronic.denervation in multiple musc.es with normal nerve c.nduc.ion studies, c.nfirming ALS diagnosis. Previous studies have shown that subc.inic.l sympathetic.hyperfunc.ion and parasympathetic.hypofunc.ion might result in c.rdiovasc.lar dysfunc.ion in ALS patients. It is important to detec. disturbanc.s of autonomic.c.rdiac.c.ntrol bec.use this dysfunc.ion may influenc. survival and quality of life, leading to a dec.ease in life expec.anc. in ALS *** c.se Report may support the impairment of c.rdiac.autonomic.c.ntrol in patients with ALS.
