Electrochemical reduction of Cr(Ⅵ)in the presence of sodium alginate and its application in water purification

Chromium(Cr)is used in many manufacturing processes,and its release into natural waters is a major environmental problem *** concentrations of Cr(Ⅵ)are toxic to human health and living organisms due to the carcinogenic and mutagenic nature of this *** work examined the conversion of Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)via electrochemical reduction using gold electrode in an acidic sodium alginate(SA)solution and subsequent removal of the produced Cr(Ⅲ)-SA by the polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration(PEUF)technique.A solution of SA in nitric acid was used both as an electrolytic medium during the voltammetric measurements and bulk electrolysis and as an extracting agent during the PEUF *** electroanalysis of Cr(Ⅵ)was performed by linear sweep voltammetry in the presence of acidic SA solution to study its voltammetric behavior as a function of the Cr(Ⅵ)concentration,pH,presence of Cr(Ⅲ),SA concentration and scan *** addition,the quantitative reduction of Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)was studied through the bulk electrolysis *** results showed efficient reduction with well-defined peaks at approximately 0.3 V ***/AgCl,using a gold working *** the pH increased,the reduction signal strongly decreased until its *** optimum SA concentration was 10 mmol/L,and it was observed that the presence of Cr(Ⅲ)did not interfere in the Cr(Ⅵ)*** the quantitative reduction by bulk electrolysis in the presence of acidic SA solution,it was possible to reduce all Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)followed by its removal via PEUF.

Effect of Organo-Modified Nanosepiolite on Fire Behaviors and Mechanical Performance of Polypropylene Composites

The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of the organo-modified nanosepiolite(ONSep)on improving the fire safety of polypropylene(PP).The composites based on PP,flame retardant master batch(MB-FR,25 wt%PP+50 wt%decabromodiphenyl ether(DBDPE)+25%antimony trioxide(ATO))and ONSep were prepared via melt *** results of the limiting oxygen index(LOI)and vertical burning rating(UL-94)test indicated that PP/40 wt%MB composites had no rating with seriously dripping phenomenon,while the LOI value was only ***,as 4 wt%ONSep was added in PP/40 wt%MB composites,the composites achieved UL94 V-0 rating and the LOI value was *** comparison,PP/50 wt%MB composites could not reach the V-0 rating *** TGA results revealed that the addition of ONSep enhanced the thermal stability of the PP/MB-FR *** cone calorimeter results indicated that the heat release rate,average mass loss rate,smoke production rate and smoke temperature of the PP/40 wt%MB-FR/4 wt%ONSep composites decreased in comparison with those of PP/40 wt%MB-FR ***,the Young modulus and impact strength were also much better improved with the increase of ONSep ***,the synergistic flame retardancy of ONSep in PP/MB-FR matrix significantly containing a halogen based flame retardant(DBDPE)significantly improved the fire safety and mechanical properties of the composites,and allowed to decrease the total amount of brominated fire retardants.

Association of the HLA-DRB1*0701 allele with perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmatic antibodies in Mexican patients with severe ulcerative colitis

AIM： To determine the association between the HLADRB1 alleles and perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmatic antibodies （p-ANCA） positive in Mexican patients with ulcerative colitis （UC）. METHODS： Ninety Mexican mestizo patients （45 females） with UC, confirmed by biopsy, were studied. High resolution HLA typing was performed by PCR-SSO reverse dot blot and PCR-SSP. Molecular typing techniques were applied to define HLA-DRB1 alleles. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunofluorescence techniques were used to detect p-ANCA. RESULTS： Forty-eight （53%） UC patients were positive for p-ANCA by ELISA and IF. We found that p-ANCA- positive UC patients had a significantly increased frequency of HLA-DR7 compared with p-ANCA-negative controls （22% vs 5.1%; pC=0.02, OR=5.2, CI 95%： 1.06-37.82）. Disease activity was scored as severe in 20 patients, moderate in 8, mild in 14 and no activity in the remaining 38 patients according to the Truelove and Witts criteria. Subgroup analysis showed a significantly increased frequency of the HLA-DRB1＊07 allele in 15 of 20 UC patients with severe activity of UC and p-ANCA positivity [100% vs 0%; pC=0.0000001; OR=35]. No significant differences were found between p-ANCA positive patients, HLA-DR alleles and other clinical features such as extraintestinal manifestations, proctocolectomy and ***： The HLA-DRB1＊07 is associated with p-ANCA positive UC Mexican patients.

Globe penetration during loco-regional anesthesia: prevalence and review of cases

AIM: To describe prevalence and different clinical signs and management of cases with penetrating eye injuries during loco-regional anesthesia for ophthalmic surgery. METHODS: A retrospective review of clinical records was carried out, identifying cases of globe penetration secondary to peribulbar anesthesia injection during 5 y activity in Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer. RESULTS: A total of 17 460 needle-based ocular anesthesia procedures were performed in our centre and 4 cases of globe penetration were recorded with an estimated prevalence of 0.024%. Globe penetrations were always detected in the first 24 h after surgery. Vitreous haemorrhage was found in all the cases. Two eyes presented retinal detachment and two eyes choroidal detachment(CD). The initial surgical approach was performed within the first 48 h. Silicone oil was used as tamponade in three eyes and the fourth case remained only with air. Detachments were solved successfully in all the cases. Functional results varied among cases, depending on ocular remarkable antecedent and globe penetration with or without retinal or ***: Prevalence of globe penetration during loco-regional anesthesia is low in our centre. Physicians should consider the possibility of globe penetration in eyes with postoperative atypical appearance after locoregional anesthesia. Immediate B-scan ultrasonography is recommended in suspicious cases with a dense vitreous haemorrhage. An early vitrectomy surgery in conjunction with laser or cryotherapy at the penetration sites is essential for good anatomical and functional results.

Clinical usefulness of adherence to gastro-esophageal reflux disease guideline by Spanish gastroenterologists

AIM:To investigate usefulness of adherence to gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) guideline established by the Spanish Association of ***:Prospective,observational and multicentre study of 301 patients with typical symptoms of GERD who should be managed in accordance with guidelines and were attended by gastroenterologists in daily ***(aged > 18 years) were eligible for inclusion if they had typical symptoms of GERD(heartburn and/or acid regurgitation) as the major complaint in the presence or absence of accompanying atypical symptoms,such as dyspeptic symptoms and/or supraesophageal *** and therapeutic decisions should be made based on specific recommendations of the Spanish clinical practice guideline for GERD which is a widely disseminated and well known instrument among Spanish in digestive disease ***:Endoscopy was indicated in 123(41%) patients:50 with alarm symptoms,32 with age > 50 years without alarm ***-two patients(58.5%) had esophagitis(grade A,23,grade B,28,grade C,18,grade D,3).In the presence of alarm symptoms,endoscopy was indicated consistently with recommendations in 98% of ***,in the absence of alarm symptoms,endoscopy was indicated in 33% of patients > 50 years(not recommended by the guideline).Adherence for proton pump inhibitors(PPIs) therapy was 80%,but doses prescribed were lower(half) in 5% of cases and higher(double) in 15%.Adherence regarding duration of PPI therapy was 69%;duration was shorter than recommended in 1%(4 wk in esophagitis grades C-D) or longer in 30%(8 wk in esophagitis grades A-B or in patients without endoscopy).Treatment response was higher when PPI doses were consistent with guidelines,although differences were not significant(95% vs 85%).CONCLUSION:GERD guideline compliance was quite good although endoscopy was over indicated in patients > 50 years without alarm symptoms;PPIs were prescribed at higher doses and longer duration.
