Amyloid peptides are renowned to be related to neurodegenerative diseases, however, a fruitful avenue is to employ them as high-performance nanomaterials. These materials benefit from the intrinsic outstanding mechanical robustness of the amyloid backbone made of r-strands. In this work, we exploited amyloid-like fibrils as functional material to attach pristine L-cysteine aggregates （cystine oligomers） and gold nanoparticles, without the need of templating compounds. This work will open new avenues on functional materials design and their realisation.

The current research aims to present an inclusive review of latest research works performed with the aim of improving the efficiency of the hybrid renewable energy systems (HRESs) by employing diverse ranges of the optimization techniques, which aid the designers to achieve the minimum expected total cost, while satisfying the power demand and the reliability. For this purpose, a detailed analysis of the different classification drivers considering the design factors such as the optimization goals, utilized optimization methods, grid type as well as the investigated technology has been conducted. Initial results have indicated that among all optimization goals, load demand parameters including loss of power supply probability (LPSP) and loss of load probability (LLP), cost, sizing (configuration), energy production, and environmental emissions are the most frequent design variables which have been cited the most. Another result of this paper indicates that almost 70% of the research projects have been dedicated towards the optimization of the off-grid applications of the HRESs. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that, integration of the PV, wind and battery is the most frequent configuration. In the next stage of the paper, a review concerning the sizing methods is also carried out to outline the most common techniques which are used to configure the components of the HRESs. In this regard, an analysis covering the optimized indicators such as the cost drivers, energy index parameters, load indicators, battery’s state of charge, PV generator area, design parameters such as the LPSP, and the wind power generation to load ratio, is also performed.

Effects of Water Distribution Uniformity on Waxy Corn (<i>Zea mays</i>L.) Yield: Preliminary Results

To face climatic changes, the increase of frequency and severity of droughts, and economic development pressures, Water Management Institutions point at the necessity of water conserving. A sustainable demand-led approach is the most viable option, focusing on achieving more efficient irrigation practices instead of less sustainable expansion of supply. The aim of this work is to investigate on some aspects of the rational water management for the irrigation of corn in order to evaluate the actual possibility of introduction of drip irrigation systems on the Venetian Plain. Trials were carried out on a farm located in Isola della Scala (Verona, Italy) in an area of about 13 ha (12 ha with a drip irrigation system and 1 ha with a solid-set sprinkler system);the effects of the performance of the two systems on waxy corn yield were considered. In particular, water distribution uniformity, water use efficiency, and yield performance of irrigation systems were evaluated. DUlq and CU coefficients for distribution uniformity and IWUe and WUEb indexes for water use efficiency were calculated. To visualize and better analyze the distribution uniformity, the crop yield and the efficiency parameters, ArcGIS 10 (ESRI?) with IDW interpolation were used to create maps. First results show a good water uniformity distribution in the drip irrigation system but only with a careful and proper design of the entire system. As regards the water use efficiency, drip irrigation values are lower than those of sprinkler irrigation (-46% for IWUe and -25% for WUEb), probably due to different irrigation management and water volumes used: in fact, drip irrigation was scheduled every three days, while only supplemental operations were done for sprinkler irrigation. No statistical correlation was found between application rate and yield for both irrigations systems, while a significant correlation was found between irrigation volume and crop water use efficiency. During the operational phase, building performance may decrease in various areas, so that the end users' requirements are no longer met. Consequently, indicators are useful to assess and improve the performance of existing buildings. In this study, we carried out a literature review and organized a focus group with facility management experts to gather and analyze facility managers' perceptions on operational indicators that could be used to assess the performance of buildings. The results revealed that the core indicators used to measure a building's operational performance are related to safety and assets working properly, health and comfort, space functionality,and energy performance. The findings also revealed that these indicators can be obtained from three sources: a)facility managers/operators, who carry out corrective maintenance and perform technical inspections, b) regular users, who report complaints and fill-in satisfaction questionnaires, and c) sporadic users, who also fill-in satisfaction questionnaires. These indicators and their sources can contribute to a better analysis of building performance and the definition of measures to improve performance during the operational phase of a building.

In a full-arch implant rehabilitation ad modum Branemark, the distribution of stress and strain in mandibular bone is influenced by the type, number and position of implants used. In particular, the biomechanical behaviour of the bone structure after complete osseointegration depends on the load transferred to the bone by each fixture. In this study, a finite-element analysis of two models was performed. Models of an all-on-four configuration and a six-implant configuration were compared in a worst-case scenario. A new V parameter is presented to aid the quantitative and comparative analysis of the all-on-four and six-implant configurations. The influence of orthotropy was also investigated, and a geometric change in the all-on-four configuration is presented.

人类面部形态由神经外胚层发育而来,是区别个体的最显著特征之一。研究人面部特征的遗传机制可为生物医学、司法鉴定等应用领域提供依据。虽然目前已经在正常人群和患病人群中发现了一些与面部特征相关的基因,但是还有许多面部特征的基因有待发现。本研究基于拉美人群进化和多样性研究联合会(consortium for the analysis of the diversity and evolution of Latin America,CANDELA)队列中的1140个秘鲁健康人群,通过标定其面部的47个特征点来计算中部和下部脸部面积,并计算47个特征点之间的欧式距离,以其结果作为表型;与约七十万个单核苷酸多态性(single nucleotide polymorphisms,SNPs)的全基因组分型数据进行全基因组关联分析(genome-wide association study,GWAS),并在CANDELA队列中的384个巴西和智利的独立健康人群中进行结果验证。本研究用一个加性遗传模型来进行线性回归关联检验,其中因变量为表型的数量性状,协变量为年龄、性别、身体质量指数(body mass index,BMI)及基因组群体分层分析中的前5个主成分(principal components,PCs)。研究结果表明,位于LD基因区(EDAR,LIMS1,RANBP2,SULT1C4,CCDC138,GCC2)的17个单核苷酸多态性与7个数量表型有很强的相关性;其中EDAR作为影响头面发育的一因多效性基因,在本研究中影响中部颅面形态。
