Selenium (Se) contamination can be a potential groundwater concern near un-lined coal ash landfills. Of all the Environmental Protection Agency’s priority and non-priority pollutants, Se has the narrowest concentration range considered beneficial and detrimental for aquatic and terrestrial organisms. The effects of ash type (i.e., fresh and weathered), water-extractant type (i.e., deionized water, rainwater, and groundwater), and extraction time (i.e., 2 and 6 hours) on Se, arsenic (As), and chromium (Cr) concentrations were investigated from Class C, subbituminous coal fly ash produced at the Flint Creek Power Plant (Benton County, AR). Water-extractable Se concentrations differed (p = 0.03) between ash types across water-extractants, but were unaffected (p > 0.05) by extraction times. Unexpectedly, fresh ash water-extractable Se concentrations were below minimum detection limits (i.e., 2.0 μg·L-1) for all treatments. In contrast, averaged over extraction times, the water-extractable Se concentration from weathered ash was greatest (p h groundwater and rainwater, which did not differ and averaged 60.0 μg·L-1, compared to extraction with deionized water (57.6 μg·L-1). Selenite SeO32- was greater (p ·L-1) than in the weathered ash (0.70 mg·kg-1), while selenate SeO42- concentration was greater (p he weathered (0.67 mg·kg-1) than in fresh ash (0.48 mg·kg-1). Results from this study indicate that environmental weathering of Class C, subbituminous fly ash promotes oxidation of selenite, to the less toxic, but highly mobile selenate. The formation of hydrated ettringite [Ca6Al2(SO4)3(Oh)12·26h2O] and calcium selenite (CaSeO3) likely acted as a sink for weathered ash selenite. Implications of this research include a better understanding of the past, present, and future environmental and health risk potential associated with the release of watersoluble Se, As, and Cr to aid in the development of sustainable fly ash management strategies.

Triazaphospholes(TAPs) as a fascinating class of low-coordinate phosphourus heterocycle compounds, containing a conjugated π system with high degree of aromaticity and a rather high π density at the phosphorus atom have also attracted much interest over the past decades. 3 h-1,2,3,4-triazaphospholes as phosphorus analogues of the well-documented 1,2,3-triazoles, first reported by Regitz et al. in 1984, were prepared by a [3+2] cycloaddition reaction of phosphaalkynes with azides in the absence of the requirement of a catalyst. Until now, mainly TAPs with electron donating substituents have been extensively investigated. In order to gain further insight into the scope of TAPs, we start to explore the reactivity and coordination chemistry of the TAPs containing an electron-withdrawing tosyl group. herein we report on the synthesis and characterization of the tosyl-substituted 3 h-1,2,3,4-triazaphospholes(1 a, b) and their gold(I) complexes(2 a, b) based on cyclo-1,3-diphospha-2,4-diazanes, which confirmed by single crystal X-ray crystallography analyses. By investigation the proposed mechanism of the reaction, it is notable that the tert-butyl group were converted into the iso-pentenyl substituents by methyl migration besides obvious spontaneous nitrogen extrusion which monitored by GC-TCD. The phosphorus atoms were coordinated with gold(I) precursor, respectively. The trapping experiments also showed that a key intermediate iminophosphine was confirmed by ESI-MS.

In 2006 the avian influenza A (h5N1) virus received considerable media coverage in Australia, as it did in many other countries. It is often argued that the media sensationalizes health crises, and experts cautioned about the risk of panic as a result of fear of avian influenza. The purpose of the present study was to systematically analyze Australian print media coverage of avian influenza in 2006 and to examine whether this coverage served the purpose of informing, rather than alarming, the general public. For the period January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006, 20 Australian newspaper titles were monitored for coverage of avian influenza. The identified articles were analyzed using aspects of protection motivation theory for theoretical direction to determine whether there were any consistent themes or perspectives in the coverage. A total of 850 articles were identified for analysis. Concerning vulnerability, 46% of articles reported the incidence of human cases, with 24% noting that avian influenza was a potential threat to Australia. The most common severity theme was “deadly” with over 50% of mentions, followed by “pandemic” with 35%. Only 11% of articles referred to any form of self-protection. We found that a considerable proportion of the articles reporting on avian influenza were framed in a way that had the potential to incite fear and panic amongst the public;the intensity of media coverage reduced over time;and, of particular concern, that there was little media coverage that focused on protective or preventative issues. Whether an influenza pandemic eventuates or not, it is prudent for governments and health authorities to continually develop appropriate resources and strategies to prepare the health system and the general public to respond to current, and future, infectious disease risks.

朱利安·斯图尔特是美国文化生态学大家,对考古学和民族学都有开拓性的贡献,本文虽然不长,但较全面系统地阐释了他文化生态学的基本思想。文化生态学认为社会是对周围环境适应的产物,文化生态学的研究即考察社会对其环境的适应过程。但文化生态学并不等于传统意义上的"环境决定论",它还同时考虑除环境之外其它因素对社会的影响,而且它认为社会与环境之间是双向的互动关系,社会固然要适应环境,但也影响乃至改造环境。社会对环境的依赖或适应程度随文化(特别是技术)的发展而变化,发展程度越低的社会(如史前社会)越受到环境的制约,这表现在社会结构等方面,但同时,构成文化的各个变量受环境影响的程度并非同等而是有所区别。随着文化的发展,社会越来越脱离自然环境的束缚,资源利用远远超出自身所在的范围,经济形态趋于专业化,社会结构上也成为一个更大组织的一部分。还要特别注意到的是,斯图尔特对生态因素的考察不仅包括自然环境,还包括了人自身的生物性特征,认为这可能也是影响文化特别是社会结构的基本要素之一。斯图尔特的文化生态学思想对于新考古学有着巨大的影响,特别是他所强调的文化的功能适应方面,对于人类早期社会的解释有十分重要的意义。但是随着考古学的发展,人类文化发展所展现出的复杂性和丰富性,远远超出了文化生态学所能提供的解释。生态因素固然可以很好地解释技术经济和社会结构问题,但对文化中的意识观念领域则无能为力,这是它的局限性。

Accounting for the Effects of Climate Variability in Regional Flood Frequency Estimates in Western Nigeria

Extreme flood events are becoming more frequent and intense in recent times, owing to climate change and other anthropogenic factors. Nigeria, the case-study for this research experiences recurrent flooding, with the most disastrous being the 2012 flood event that resulted in unprecedented damage to infrastructure, displacement of people, socio-economic disruption, and loss of lives. To mitigate and minimize the impact of such floods now and in the future, effective planning is required, underpinned by analytics based on reliable data and information. Such data are seldom available in many developing regions, owing to financial, technical, and organizational drawbacks that result in short-length and inadequate historical data that are prone to uncertainties if directly applied for flood frequency estimation. This study applies regional Flood Frequency Analysis (FFA) to curtail deficiencies in historical data, by agglomerating data from various sites with similar hydro-geomorphological characteristics and is governed by a similar probability distribution, differing only by an “index-flood”;as well as accounting for climate variability effect. Data from 17 gauging stations within the Ogun-Osun River Basin in Western Nigeria were analysed, resulting in the delineation of 3 sub-regions, of which 2 were homogeneous and 1 heterogeneous. The Generalized Logistic distribution was fitted to the annual maximum flood series for the 2 homogeneous regions to estimate flood magnitudes and the probability of occurrence while accounting for climate variability. The influence of climate variability on flood estimates in the region was linked to the Madden-julian Oscillation (MJO) climate indices and resulted in increased flood magnitude for regional and direct flood frequency estimates varying from 0% - 35% and demonstrate that multi-decadal changes in atmospheric conditions influence both small and large floods.
