Bioenergy,currently the largest renewable energy source in the EU(64%of the total renewable energy consumption),has sparked great interest to meet the32%renewable resources for the 2030 bioeconomy *** design of innovative cropping systems informed by bioeconomy imperatives requires the evaluate of the effects of introducing crops for bioenergy into conventional crop *** study aimed to assess the impacts of changes in conventional cropping systems in mixed dairy cattle farms redesigned to introduce bioenergy crops either by increasing the biomass production through an increase of cover crops,while keeping main feed/food crops,or by substituting food crops with an increase of the crop rotation *** assessment is based on the comparison between conventional and innovative systems oriented to feed and biogas production,with and without tillage,to evaluate their agri-environmental performances(biomass production,nitrogen fertilization autonomy,greenhouse gas emissions and biogas production).The result showed higher values in the biogas cropping system than in the conventional and feed ones for all indicators,biomass productivity(27%and20%higher,respectively),nitrogen fertilization autonomy(26%and 73%higher,respectively),methanogenic potential(77%and 41%higher,respectively)and greenhouse gas emissions(15%and 3%higher,respectively).There were no negative impacts of no-till compared to the tillage practice,for all tested *** biogas cropping system showed a better potential in terms of agri-environmental performance,although its greenhouse gas emissions were ***,it would be appropriate to undertake a multicriteria assessment integrating agri-environmental,economic and social performances.

The ecotone between alpine steppe and meadow in the central Tibetan Plateau is sensitive to climate changes. Here we used the pollen records from three lakes in this region to reconstruct the evolution of local vegetation and climate since 8200 cal. yr BP. The history of temperature and precipitation was reconstructed quantitatively with multi-bioclimatic indexes and a transfer function from pollen records. Results show that the steppe/meadow dominated during the period of 8200―6500 cal. yr BP, especially 8200―7200 cal. yr BP, indicating the central Tibetan Plateau was controlled by strong monsoon. The steppe dominated during the periods of 6000―4900, 4400―3900, and 2800―2400 cal. yr BP. The steppe decreased gradually and the meadow expanded during the period of 4900―4400 cal. yr BP. Three century-scale drought events occurred during 5800―4900, 4400―3900 and 2800 cal. yr BP, respectively. The first time when the regional climate shifted to the present level was at 6500 cal. yr BP in the central Plateau. Since 3000 cal. yr BP, the temperature and precipitation have decreased gradually to the present level. However, the cold climate between 700―300 cal. yr BP likely corresponds to the Little ice Age.

This case study focuses on the sustainable design of a demonstration kitchen space within a multifamily residence through a student lens.A project-based learning opportunity for undergraduate students in a senior-level kitchen and bath design studio was created to redesign a multifamily starter kitchen space into a multifamily sustainable kitchen space within the Center for Real Life Kitchen Design at Virginia *** completion of this student project,a content analysis was employed to uncover sustainability themes within these student *** students are making the environment and sustainability priorities in their shopping choices,uncovering student themes regarding multifamily sustainability kitchen design criteria can uncover trends important to this millennial generation(The Nielsen Company,2015;Timm,2014).Furthermore,as demand for sustainability increases,comparing student themes to multifamily industry sustainability certification systems may unearth potential gaps in the industry which need to be *** there are several sustainability certification agencies that apply to multifamily in general,there is no one specific source for sustainability guidelines for kitchens,much less in multifamily *** lack of guidelines and the inconsistency between existing certification programs make it confusing for consumers,developers,designers,and students to value and weigh elements of a sustainable kitchen project,especially with respect to multifamily *** examining kitchens using current sustainability certification programs as well as this case study,recommendations can be put forth to shape guidelines for sustainable multifamily kitchens that are both clearly understood and sensitive to the ***,this could lead to sustainable kitchen design features becoming more commonplace in the multifamily resident home.

Glioblastoma(GBM) is one of the deadliest tumors and has a median survival of 3 months if left untreated. Despite advances in rationally targeted pharmacological approaches, the clinical care of GBM remains palliative in intent. Since the majority of altered signaling cascades involved in cancer establishment and progression eventually affect cell cycle progression, an alternative approach for cancer therapy is to develop innovative compounds that block the activity of crucial molecules needed by tumor cells to complete cell division. in this context, we review promising ongoing and future strategies for GBM therapeutics aimed towards G2/M inhibition such as anti-microtubule agents and targeted therapy against G2/M regulators like cyclin-dependent kinases,Aurora inhibitors, PLK1, BUB, 1, and BUBR1, and survivin. Moreover, we also include investigational agents in the preclinical and early clinical settings. Although several drugs were shown to be gliotoxic, most of them have not yet entered therapeutic trials. The use of either single exposure or a combination with novel compounds may lead to treatment alternatives for GBM patients in the near future.

Dear Editor, Flavonols are synthesized by flavonol synthase （FLS） enzymes （martens et al., 2010）. These compounds absorb UV-B light in the 280-320-nm region and their concentration increases in plants exposed to environmental abiotic and biotic stresses, including UV-B; consequently, flavonols are thought to act as UV-B filters （Agati et al., 2011）. it has been also suggested that these metabolites function as reactive oxygen species （ROS） scavengers, as they contain an OH- group in the 3-position of the flavonoid skeleton, which allows them to chelate metals, inhibiting the formation of free radicals and ROS accumula- tion, once formed （Agati et al., 2009）. For these reasons, it has been suggested that flavonols play uncharacterized roles in UV responses （Verdan et al., 2011）. Nevertheless, despite the fact that the role of flavonols in UV-B protection has been inferred, the protection conferred by flavonols on the target sites of UV-B-damage has not been directly proven in planta.

Spatio-temporal analysis of flowering using Li DAR topography

Spatio-temporal patterns of flowering in forest ecosystems are hard to quantify and monitor. The objectives of this study were to investigate spatio-temporal patterns（e.g. soilssimple slope classesslope aspectand flow accumulation） of flowering around Lake issaqueenaSouth Carolina（SCUSA） using plant-flowering database collected with GPS- enabled camera（stored in Picasa 3 web albums and project website） on a monthly basis in 2012 and Li DAR-based topography. Pacolet fine sandy loam had the most flowering plantsfollowed by madison sandy loamboth dominant soil types around the lake. Most flowering plants were on moderately steep（17%–30%） and gently sloping（4%–8%） slopes. Most flowering plants were on west（247.5°–292.5°）southwest（202.5°–247.5°）and northwest（292.5°–337.5°） aspects. Most flowering plants were associated with minimum and maximum flows within the landscape. Chi-square tests indicated differences in the distributions of the proportions of flowering plants were significant by soil typeslopeaspectand flow accumulation for each month（February-November）for all months（overall）and across months. The Chi-square test on area-normalized data indicated significant differences for all months and individual differences by each month with some months not statistically significant. Cluster analysis on flowering counts for nine plant families with the most flowering counts indicated no unique separation by clusterbut implied that the majority of these families were flowering on strongly sloping（9%–16%） slopeson southwest（202.5°–247.5°） aspectsand low flow accumulation（0–200）. Presented methodology can serve as a template for future efforts to quantify spatio-temporal patterns of flowering and other phenological events.
