Natural history of children with mild Crohn’s disease

BACKGROUND There is a small and poorly studied population of patients with mild and limited Crohn’s disease(CD),who either spontaneously enter remission and can discontinue therapy,or be maintained on milder anti-inflammatory *** To identify a group of children with mild CD who were not escalated to immunomodulators(azathioprine,mercaptopurine,or methotrexate)or biologics(infliximab or adalimumab)within the first two years after their Crohn’s diagnosis and outline the natural history and phenotypic features of these *** In a retrospective chart review of the inflammatory bowel disease database at Boston Children’s Hospital we reviewed all the mild CD patient’s clinic visits,laboratory studies,and procedures for the duration of time they were followed at the *** were included if they had clear diagnosis of Crohn’s disease,and they were not escalated to immunosuppressive therapies for at least 2 years after the date of *** mild CD patients were compared to controls diagnosed at a similar time,that were treated with immunomodulators or *** that was abstracted included:Age at diagnosis,sex,disease location utilizing the Paris classification,medical treatment,surgical treatment,endoscopic findings,histology,and *** also analyzed differences in the phenotypic features between those with mild CD and those with moderate to severe *** Out of 1205 patients with CD diagnosed between 1990 and 2013,we identified 29 patients that met the inclusion criteria,and they were matched with 58 *** were no significant differences between the disease behaviors at presentation,with approximately 90%of patients in each group having inflammatory ***,patients with mild disease were more likely to have disease limited to the colon(31%vs 12%,P=0.03).In contrast,patients with moderate to severe disease(aka control group)were more likely to have ileocolonic disease(70%vs 45%in the mild grou

Disordered multicomponent systems attract great interest due to their engineering design flexibility and subsequent rich space of ***,detailed characterization of the structure and atomic correlations remains challenging and hinders full navigation of these complex spaces.A lattice cluster expansion is one tool to obtain configurational and energetic *** in theory a cluster expansion can be applied to any system of any dimensionality,the method has primarily been used in binary systems or ternary *** we apply cluster expansions in high-component ionic systems,setting up the largest cluster expansion ever attempted to our *** doing so,we address and discuss challenges specific to high-component ionic systems,namely charge state assignments,structural relaxations,and rank-deficient *** introduce practical procedures to make the fitting and analysis of complex systems tractable,providing guidance for future computational studies of disordered ionic systems.

Comparative water relations of co-occurring trees in a mixed podocarp-broadleaf forest

Aims As extreme climatic events including droughts and heat waves become more common in a changing climate,tree mortality has increased across the *** order to determine whether certain species have a competitive advantage over others,we explored the water-relations and leaf-gas exchange of four co-occurring spe-cies in a forest in northern Aotearoa-New *** studied the ecologically and culturally significant foundation species,Agathis australis(a conifer),two additional conifers,Phyllocladus tricho-manoides and Podocarpus totara and the angiosperm Knightia *** We measured sap flow,leaf-gas exchange and xylem water poten-tials of leaves and terminal branches with concurrent measures of micrometeorological data on days with very few *** derived whole tree hydraulic conductance and instantaneous water-use efficiency(WUEi)at our remnant forest in west Auckland during February 2015(southern hemisphere summer).Important Findings The four species behaved similarly in their diurnal curves of gas exchange and water *** of assimilation,stomatal con-ductance and WUEi were similar among trees of different *** tree hydraulic conductance was also similar among *** results indicate functional convergence in water relations,possibly driven by low nutrient soils at the *** results suggest that there is no species with a clear adaptive advantage over the others in the context of climate change.

A design framework for a kinetic shading device system for building envelopes

This paper presents a design framework of a shading device applied on a building envelope,with a scheduled automatic activation logic,based on a sun path *** proposal aims to balance the direct sun indoor exposure by evaluating the envelope area exposed to direct sun rays and the hourly activation rate of shading *** procedures are over the parametric modeling and simulation platform using raytracing,structural finite element analysis,and Computer Numerical Control(CNC)*** design process of building envelopes equipped with kinetic devices can use all these design *** kinetic device’s activation logic relies on the feed-forward paradigm,scheduling the activation from the parametric modeling and the sun path diagram,using an angle threshold between the device post and the sun vector as a *** design framework showed the preliminary path to develop shading devices considering the building envelope shape with a feedforward activation logic based on local sun path characteristics.

Microstructural evaluation of initial dissolution of aluminosilicate particles and formation of geopolymer material

The rheological behavior of microparticulate structures of geopolymers was *** materials were developed from alternative sources of aluminosilicate and were activated in different concentrations using 5,10,and 15M sodium hydroxide,and sodium silicate,which were added in a 2:1ratio (by volume).The solid constituents used were bottom ash/metakaolin and neat metakaolin in a 2:1blend. The theological characteristics were determined after 5min of homogenization and a subsequent curing of the pastes at room temperature for 28 *** materials presented amorphous characteristics, which confirmed the formation of geopolymers.A thixotropic behavior was observed for all forrfiulations,except for bottom ash/metakaolin activated at 5M,which resulted in geopolymers with a lower intensity compared with those activated at 10 and 15M,High activator concentrations exhibited a proportional relationship for geopolymer ring growth,which resulted in a reduced structure mobility and, consequently,an increased viscosity and yield *** effects are more evident in the metakaolin samples,and are associated with the water content that is required for *** that were activated with 10M sodium hydroxide presented a favorable workability and particle packing,in terms of the theological and structural aspects.

Utility of direct 3D co-culture model for chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells on hyaluronan scaffold(Hyaff-11)

This study presents direct 2D and 3D co-culture model of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)line with chondrocytes isolated from patients with osteoarthritis(unaffected area).MSCs differentiation into chondrocytes after 14,17 days was checked by estimation of collagen Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅹ,aggrecan expression using ***,localization of cells on Hyaff-11 was performed using enzymatic technique and THUNDER Imaging *** showed,that MSCs/chondrocytes 3D co-culture induced suitable conditions for chondrocytes grow and MSCs differentiation than 2D *** that differentiated cells on Hyaff-11 expressed collagen Ⅹ,they showed high collagen Ⅱ(80%)and aggrecan(60%)expression with simultaneous decrease of collagen Ⅰ expression(10%).The high concentration of differentiated cells on Hyaff-11,indicate that this structure has an impact on cells cooperation and *** conclusion,we suggest that high expression of collagen Ⅱ and aggrecan in 3D co-culture model,indicate that cooperation between different subpopulations may have synergistic impact on MSCs chondrogenic *** the high concentration and localization of cells growing in deeper layers of membrane in 3D co-culture,indicate that induced microenvironmental enhance cell migration within ***,we suggest that co-culture model might be useful for construction a bioactive structure for cartilage tissue regeneration.

Lung cancer risk in never-smokers:An overview of environmental and genetic factors

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality globally,accounting for 1.8 million deaths in *** the vast majority are caused by tobacco smoking,15%-25%of all lung cancer cases occur in lifelong *** International Agency for Research on Cancer(IARC)has classified multiple agents with sufficient evidence for lung carcinogenesis in humans,which include tobacco smoking,as well as several environmental exposures such as radon,second-hand tobacco smoke,outdoor air pollution,household combustion of coal and several occupational ***,the IARC evaluation had not been stratified based on smoking status,and notably lung cancer in never-smokers(LCINS)has different epidemiological,clinicopathologic and molecular characteristics from lung cancer in *** several risk factors proposed for the development of LCINS,environmental factors have the most available evidence for their association with LCINS and their roles cannot be ***,while initial genetic studies largely focused on lung cancer as a whole,recent studies have also identified genetic risk factors for *** article presents an overview of several environmental factors associated with LCINS,and some of the emerging evidence for genetic factors associated with *** increased understanding of the risk factors associated with LCINS not only helps to evaluate a never-smoker’s personal risk for lung cancer,but also has important public health implications for the prevention and early detection of the *** evidence on causal associations could inform longer-term policy reform in a range of areas including occupational health and safety,urban design,energy use and particle emissions,and the importance of considering the impacts of second-hand smoke in tobacco control policy.
