A Field Assessment on Natural Ventilation and Thermal Comfort of Historical District--A Case of the Wugoushui Settlement in Taiwan

Due to the urban and town development, it is common to see historical buildings and new buildings intermingled with one and another inside historical regions in Taiwan. With the increase of new buildings, natural ventilation becomes harder, which leads to the impact on the preservation of historical building and the reduction of thermal comfort for residents. Besides, problems of new buildings＇ construction and design affect the developments of cities and towns in historical district, which has existed for hundreds of years. The Wugoushui Settlement is located in Pingtung County, the southernmost part of Taiwan, and its hot season of a year is pretty long and belongs to warm and humid tropical climate. In 2008, the Pingtung County Government officially registered and announced Wugoushui as traditional settlement and meanwhile, provided the maintenance and preservation for buildings in this region on government subsidies. This paper is based on one-year-long field experiments of Wugoushui Settlement. Residents in Wugoushui Settlement continue constructing new buildings near by the traditional buildings. With the fact that constructions of new buildings result in huge impact on the circumstances of natural ventilation and thermal comfort, which have been for hundreds of years, the simple weather station is set up to collect the data of local microclimate. In addition, four representative traditional architectures were selected to be measured their indoor and outdoor temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction and thermal radiation both in winter （December to February） and in summer （May to September）. The measurement time of each building is one week and every data record is kept every minute. Besides, residents were asked to fill out the comfort survey. Based on these data, the distributions of indoor and outdoor thermal environment as well as the thermal comfort of living space under the condition of the natural ventilation are assessed. Hypoglycemic and Antioxidative Effects of <i>Glossogyne tenuifolia</i>on Streptozotocin-Nicotinamide-Induced Diabetic Rats

Glossogyne tenuifolia (GT) is the traditional herbal tea in Penghu Island, Taiwan. Recent research has shown that the active components in GT are potential inhibitors of α-glucosidase. The present study investigated that whether or not GT could improve the status of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Male Wistar rats aged eight weeks were induced to be hyperglycemic by subcutaneous injection of streptozotocin-nicotinamide (STZ-NA) and combination of high-fat diet (HFD). The animals were given GT extracts at the low dose or high dose, or the anti-diabetic drug (acarbose), in drinking water for 4 weeks. The results showed that hot water extracts from GT resulted in significantly decreases in fasting blood glucose at the 1st and 2nd weeks, fasting insulin levels at the 2nd week, 1 hour postprandial blood glucose after the starch tolerance test on Day 23 and blood glucose levels after oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at the 60th minute on Day 25. In addition, diabetic rats treated with GT extracts from hot water for 4 weeks displayed significantly decreased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in the serum, liver and kidney, serum total cholesterol, fasting insulin levels and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Overall, these results demonstrate that the hot water extracts of GT might improve the progression of diabetes and decrease oxidative stress in STZ-NA-induced diabetic rats.

Nurses and physicians are main manpower in the healthcare *** work ability of these professionals is closely related to a healthcare system’s quality and ***,realizing which factors might influence their work ability would be essential for the maintaining and promoting work ability. This study,thus,aims to investigate the work ability and its relationship with quality of life for clinical nurses and physicians.A cross-sectional survey was used to collect data from a medical hospital in middle Taiwan. Stratified sampling was used to obtain a sample of participants from both nurses and *** self-administered questionnaire includes two parts:（1）Work Ability Index（WAI）is used to measure self-reported work ability;（2）WHOQOL-BREF is the self-assessed quality of *** hundred and seventy five nursing professionals（with a response rate of 84%）and fifty seven clinical physicians（with a response rate of 52%）were obtained from a medical center of middle *** results of this study indicated that work ability of nurses’increase with age until after the age of ***,the residents rated significant lower quality of life in the physical and social domains than *** findings could provide some useful information for the planning and developing of human resource in healthcare institute.

Pleomorphic Hyalinizing Angiectatic Tumor (PHAT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasma. It is a pathological term describing a heterogeneous group of neoplasms of undetermined tumorigenesis and undefined malignancy. Based only on the morphological findings of histopathology, the biological potential of the tumor is indeterminate. Determination of glucose metabolism using FDG-PET revealed mildly increased FDG uptake in the tumor. We propose that FDG accumulation in the ectatic vessel, increased uptake of the pleomorphic cells and/or associated inflammatory cells, and increased permeability of the stroma lead to the imaging feature.

Effect of different inter-satellite range on measurement precision of Earth’s gravitational field from GRACE

The precision of Earth＇s gravitational field from GRACE up to degree and order 120 was studied for different inter-satellite ranges using the improved energy conservation principle. Our simulated result shows that： For long wavelength （L≤20） at degree 20, the cumulative geoid-height error gradually decreased with increasing range, from 0. 052 cm for 110 km to 1. 156 times and 1. 209 times as large for 220 km and 330 kin, respectively. For medium-wavelength （ 100 ≤ L ≤ 120） at degree 120, the cumulative geoid-height error de- creased from 13. 052 cm for 110 km, to 1. 327 times and 1. 970 times as large for the ranges of 220 km and 330 km, respectively; By adopting an optimal range of 220 ± 50 km, we can suppress considerably the loss of precision in the measurement of the Earth＇ s long-wavelength and medium-wavelength gravitational field.

BACKGROUND Sleep deprivation can lead to increased body weight and blood pressure(BP),but the latent effects of partial sleep deprivation related to required night sentry duties within a short-term period on cardiometabolic characteristic changes in military personnel are *** To investigate the association between night sentry duty frequency in the past 3 months and cardiometabolic characteristics in armed forces *** A total of 867 armed forces personnel who were aged 18-39 years and did not take any antihypertensive medications in Taiwan in 2020 were *** frequency of night sentry duty was self-reported via a questionnaire(average number of night sentry shifts per month for the past 3 months).Hemodynamic status was assessed via the resting BP and pulse rate(PR).Cardiometabolic risk factors were defined according to the International Diabetes Federation *** linear regression analyses of the associations between night sentry duties and PR,BP,and other metabolic syndrome(MetS)marker levels were performed,with adjustments for age,sex,substance use,body mass index and aerobic *** logistic regression analysis was carried out to determine the associations between night sentry duties and the prevalence of each MetS feature.

Increased levels of surfactant protein D (SP-D) and lipid-laden foamy macrophages (FMs) are frequently found under oxidative stress conditions and/or in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who are also chronically exposed to cigarette smoke (CS). However, the roles and molecular mechanisms of SP-D and FMs in COPD have not yet been determined. In this study, increased levels of SP-D were found in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and sera of ozone- and CS-exposed mice. Furthermore, SP-D-knockout mice showed increased lipid-laden FMs and airway inflammation caused by ozone and CS exposure, similar to that exhibited by our study cohort of chronic smokers and COPD patients. We also showed that an exogenous recombinant fragment of human SP-D (rfhSP-D) prevented the formation of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL)-induced FMs in vitro and reversed the airway inflammation and emphysematous changes caused by oxidative stress and CS exposure in vivo. SP-D upregulated bone marrow-derived macrophage (BMDM) expression of genes involved in countering the oxidative stress and lipid metabolism perturbations induced by CS and oxLDL. Our study demonstrates the crucial roles of SP-D in the lipid homeostasis of dysfunctional alveolar macrophages caused by ozone and CS exposure in experimental mouse emphysema, which may provide a novel opportunity for the clinical application of SP-D in patients with COPD.

Cross-cultural adaption and psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Diabetes Behavior Rating Scale: a pilot study

Self-care behavior plays a major role in diabetic management. However, in China, a satisfactory instrument has not yet been developed to evaluate the compliance of self-care behavior for young patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus （T 1DM）. The Diabetes Behavior Rating Scale （DBRS） has a potential to be the first mature instrument. The purpose of this study is to cross-culturally adapt the DBRS, and preliminarily evaluate its psychometric properties. The instrument translation included translation, back translation and culture adaptation. Psychometric properties were assessed in a sample of 116 young patients with T1DM adapting insulin injection therapy. The Chinese version of the DBRS was divided to four subscales. Cronbaeh＇s α for the total scale was 0.92. The mean inter-item and item-total correlations were 0.35 and 0.54 respectively. Test-retest reliability showed good temporal stability （r=0.81, P=0.001）. Negative correlations were found between DBRS scores with the Diabetes Distress Scale scores （r=-0.32, P=-0.003） and hemoglobin Ale （HbAlc） levels （r=-0.36, P=0.002）. Higher DBRS scores correlated with better glycemic control. The Chinese insulin injection therapy version of the DBRS is well translated and culturally adapted. It shows good overall reliability and validity and appears to be a valuable tool for assessing the diabetic self-care behaviors for young patients with T 1DM.
