Nutrient Budget for Optimal Oil Palm (<i>Elaeis guineensis</i>Jacq) Yield on Coastal Plain Sands Soils of Akwa Ibom State Nigeria

The objective of the study was to establish approximate relationships between yield and soil nutrients in oil palm production. The study was conducted in Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) substation Ibesit ekoi in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State Nigeria. Soil, rainfall and yield data were collected from oil palm plantation established 49, 29, 9 and 0 (control) years ago in an area underlain by coastal plain sands. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and multiple stepwise regression analysis were used to study variations, effect of land use on soil properties at different depths and contributions of various soil nutrients at different depths to the yield (fresh fruit bunch ‘FFB’ and palm oil) of oil palm. Results of coefficient of variability revealed that approx. 45.5% of the variables were highly variable including available phosphorus, extractable zinc, FFB and palm oil, while others were either least or moderately variable. Oil palm trees influenced soil development with its effect on silt content at 30 - 60 cm depth. Uptake of phosphorus in oil palm land use system decreases with depth. This was further confirmed by the relative contribution of available phosphorus to FFB yield that decreased from the surface of the soil downwards. Extractable zinc contents of oil palm land use were not significantly different from each other (ranging between 9.65 and 7.84 mg·kg–1) but significantly different from the control (23.99 mg·kg–1). In the modeling process, it was observed that the absolute contribution of texture was minimal while exchangeable sodium was highest (i.e. 66.5 percent) in the quantity of oil palm production. Identification of Soil Management Factors from Spatially Variable Soil Properties of Coastal Plain Sands in Southeastern Nigeria

Variability in soil properties is a critical element across wide areas of researches especially in several aspects of agriculture and environment including sewage disposal and global climate change. Particle size fraction (sand, silt, and clay), effective cation exchange capacity, base saturation, pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, carbon nitrogen ratio, available phosphorus, exchangeable bases (calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium) and acidity are frequently used in agriculture for soil management. The objective of this study therefore was to identify soil management factors from these set of 15 soil properties and spatial distribution of representative soil management properties. The study was carried out in the University of Uyo Teaching and Research Farm measuring 8.19 hectares in University of Uyo Annex, Uyo in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. Nine and ten traverses were made horizontally and vertically respectively at 40 meters intervals. A total of 58 soil samples were collected at 0 - 15 cm depth on the grid nodes of the traverses. Particle size distributions, exchangeable bases and acidity, effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC), available phosphorus (avail. P), base saturation (BS), organic carbon, total nitrogen, carbon nitrogen ratio (CNR) and pH of the samples were determined in the laboratory. Coefficient of variation indicated that 26.6% of the soil properties (sand content, pH, CNR and sodium) were least variable, 40.1% comprising silt, clay contents, ECEC, base saturation, phosphorus and magnesium were moderately. Whereas 33.3% of the soil properties comprising clay content, organic carbon, total nitrogen, exchangeable Ca, K and acidity (i.e.) were highly variable. Pregnancy Outcome among Women with Sickle Cell Disease in a Tertiary Health Institution in Abakaliki: A Retrospective Case-Control Study

Background: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with an increased risk of medical complications during pregnancy and they constitute a very high-risk group with associated increased maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality especially in a low resource setting. Objective: To determine the pregnancy outcomes among women with sickle cell disease delivered at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki. Materials and methods: This was a 7-year retrospective case-control study undertaken from January 2012 to December 2018 that compared pregnancy outcomes among women with and without haemoglobinopathy in pregnancy managed at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (AEFUTHA). The statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 22. Results: The incidence of SCD in pregnancy was 6.9 per 1000 deliveries. The age distribution of the women ranged from 18 to 45 years of age with a mean of 26.4 ± 2.4 years. The incidence of stillbirth was higher in women with HbSS when compared with HbSC but this difference did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.05). Live birth rate was higher in women with HbAA genotype when compared with those with SCD. Caesarean section rate was higher among women with SCD when compared with control (SS versus AA, P = 0.004;SC versus AA, P Conclusion: This study showed that the maternal mortality in SS and SC patients in pregnancy was not different from those of HbAA women in our hospital, although other maternal and fetal outcomes were still poor among women with SCD when compared with women without SCD.

Evaluation of Pregnancy Outcomes among Women with Pregnancies Complicated by Diabetes Mellitus in Abakaliki, South-East, Nigeria

Background: Pregnancies complicated by diabetes are associated with significant increase in maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The management of diabetes in pregnancy is a great challenge in a low resource setting because of limited resources and facilities to care for these women. Aim: To determine the maternal and perinatal outcomes of diabetic pregnant women managed at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, Southeast, Nigeria. Materials and methods: This was a 7-year retrospective case-control study that compared pregnancy outcomes among women with pregnancies complicated by diabetes and those without diabetes managed at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakalikibetween January 1st, 2012 and December 31st, 2018. The statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 22. Results: The incidence of diabetes in pregnancy in this study was 6.6 per 1000 deliveries. Of 126 women in diabetic arm of the study, 81 were diagnosed during pregnancy and 45 were known diabetic prior to conception. Over two-thirds of 126 women with pregnancy complicated by diabetes achieved good blood glucose control during pregnancy. Both groups differ in their mean BMI and women with diabetes in pregnancy were more likely to be obese compared with control (diabetic;30.1 ± 2.5 versus control;23.4 ± 2.1, P < 0.0001). Pregnant women with diabetes were more likely to be delivered by cesarean section when compared with non-diabetic women (86 versus 23, OR = 9.6, 95% CI: 5.35 - 17.32, P < 0.0001). Similarly, the incidence of polyhydramnious was higher in paturients with diabetes when compared with the control groups (26 versus 13, OR = 2.2, 95%CI: 1.10 - 4.63, P = 0.02). There were no differences between both study groups with regards to other maternal outcomes. Impact of Age on Hormonal Profiles of Sub-Fertile Women Attending Fertility Clinic in Umuahia, Abia State, South Eastern Nigeria

Aim: This study evaluated the impact of age on the hormonal profiles of women diagnosed with infertility in a Fertility Clinic in Abia State, South-East, Nigeria. Methodology: Subjects comprised of 200 females: 150 subjects and 50 controls, aged Result: The means ± SEM of serum anti-Mullerian hormones were 1602.44 ± 54.42 pg/ml (control), 848.06 ± 23.04 pg/ml (group 1), 26.74 ± 1.28 pg/ml (group 2), 10.37 ± 1.26 pg/ml (group 3) values for follicle stimulating hormone in the control subjects was 4.90 ± 0.22 mIU/ml, 12.59 ± 0.79 mIU/ml (group 1), 30.59 ± 1.31 mIU/ml (group 2), and 41.59 ± 1.59 miU/ml (group 3). Similarly, the mean ± SEM of luteinizing hormone of control, group 1, group 2 and group 3 were 5.01 ± 0.22 mIU/ml, 15.02 ± 1.13 mIU/ml, 42.71 ± 1.82 mIU/ml and 58.22 ± 2.62 mIU/ml respectively while for estadiol the values were 63.16 ± 1.95 pg/ml, 94.10 ± 5.56 pg/ml, 58.84 ± 4.01 pg/ml and 36.7 ± 1.59 pg/ml for control, group 1, group 2 and group 3 respectively. The mean ± SEM of FSH/LH ratio for the control and experimental subjects were 0.98 ± 0.01, 0.89 ± 0.02, 0.74 ± 0.03 and 0.75 ± 0.02 for control, group 1, group 2 and group 3 respectively. The comparison of the means showed significant difference (p Conclusion: The evaluation of levels of the hormonal parameters across the age ranges of the population studied shows that women within the control and experimental group 1 (<20 years and 20 - 29 years) have a better chance of achieving pregnancy naturally.
