Protein profile of leprosy patients with plantar ulcers from the Eastern Amazon region

Background:Studies investigating the nutritional status of patients with leprosy and plantar ulcers are ***,the objective of this study was to describe the protein profile of leprosy patients with plantar ulcers from the Eastern Amazon ***:A case record form was created for 75 patients with leprosy(31 with plantar ulcers and 44 without plantar ulcers)with the following data:sociodemographic characteristics,clinical form of leprosy,presence or absence of plantar ulcers,and nutritional assessment using anthropometry consisting of the measurement of body mass index,arm circumference,arm muscle circumference,and triceps *** of blood albumin,transferrin,and C-reactive protein(CRP)were also *** regarding protein intake were obtained using a Food Frequency ***:Plantar ulcers occurred more frequently in male patients(67.7%),patients aged 40-49 years(mean±SD:47.3±8.0 years),and patients receiving 300 or 600 USD(71.0%).The mean weight and height of patients were 71.6±11.4 kg and 1.62±0.1 m,*** levels of CRP were detected in 51.6%of leprosy patients with plantar ulcers and only 9.1%of patients without plantar ulcers(P<0.001).Nutritional depletion of transferrin was observed in 14.3%of patients with paucibacillary leprosy and 44.3%of patients with multibacillary leprosy(P=0.0447).Most patients had normal levels of serum albumin(74.2%with plantar ulcers and 77.3%without plantar ulcers).Conclusions:Most leprosy patients with plantar ulcers have normal levels of serum albumin and transferrin and high CRP levels,which indicates the presence of an inflammatory *** findings suggest the need to monitor patients with leprosy to prevent the occurrence of plantar ulcers and to provide adequate treatment for patients with existing plantar ulcers.

Prevalence of autoantibodies against cellular antigens in patients with HIV and leprosy coinfection in the Amazon region

Background:Infectious agents can activate self-reactive T *** general,infections trigger various mechanisms,including a lack of auto-tolerance,induction of costimulatory molecules on antigen presenting cells,and molecular simulation,in addition to cross-reactions between microbial antigens and *** and leprosy coinfections lead to self-immunity with the production of ***,not enough data on the immune behaviour associated with this coinfection are ***,this study focused on the detection of autoantibodies against cellular antigens(AACA)in individuals with HIV and leprosy coinfection in the Amazon ***:Patients were distributed into four groups according to their infections:(i)coinfection with HIV and leprosy(n=23),(ii)infection with leprosy(n=33),(iii)infection with HIV/AIDS(n=25),and(iv)healthy blood donor controls(n=100).AACA were identified by indirect immunofluorescence and the samples were tested using a commercial diagnosis kit containing the antinuclear antibody ***:Morphologically,all stages of cell division were assessed in addition to the morphological features associated with the nuclear matrix,nucleolus,mitotic spindle,and *** was a high prevalence of AACA in the coinfection group(47.8%,n=11)when compared with the control group of healthy blood donors(2.0%).The results showed predominantly cytoplasmic staining in all groups analysed,and no difference was observed between the presence or absence of AACA and the leprosy forms(paucibacillary and multibacillary)in the coinfection ***:The results of this study show that despite the tendency of coinfected patients to have higher levels of autoantibodies,no correlation was observed between clinical and laboratorial variables and morbidity associated with HIV and leprosy coinfections or the levels of AACA in the serum of coinfected *** data are important to elucidate this complex relationship between HIV a

Fourier transform is applied to remove the time-dependent variable in the diffusion *** non-harmonic initial conditions this gives rise to a non-homogeneous Helmholtz equation,which is solved by the method of fundamental solutions and the method of particular *** particular solution of Helmholtz equation is available as shown in[4,15].The approximate solution in frequency domain is then inverted numerically using the inverse Fourier transform *** frequencies are used in order to avoid aliasing phenomena and to allow the computation of the static *** numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for solving 2-D diffusion equations.

Renin angiotensin system in liver diseases: Friend or foe?

In the last three decades,the understanding of the renin angiotensin system(RAS)has been changed by the discoveries of functional local systems,novel biologically active peptides,additional specific receptors,alternative pathways of angiotensin(Ang)?Ⅱ?generation,and new roles for enzymes and precursor components other than those in Ang?Ⅱ?*** this regard,the discovery that Ang-(1-7)opposes the pressor,proliferative,pro-fibrotic,and pro-inflammatory effects mediated by Ang?Ⅱ?has contributed to the realization that the RAS is composed of two *** first axis consists of the angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE),with Ang?Ⅱ?as the end product,and the angiotensin type 1(AT1)receptor as the main effector mediating the biological actions of Ang?Ⅱ.The second axis results from ACE2-mediated hydrolysis of Ang?Ⅱ,leading to the production of Ang-(1-7),with the Mas receptor as the main effector conveying the vasodilatory,antiproliferative,anti-fibrotic,and anti-inflammatory effects of Ang-(1-7).Experimental and clinical studies have shown that both axes of the RAS may take part in the pathogenesis of liver *** this manuscript,we summarize the current evidence regarding the role of RAS in hepatic cirrhosis and its complications,including hemodynamic changes and hepatorenal *** therapeutic potential of the modulation of RAS molecules in liver diseases is also discussed.

A model of bone adaptation as a topology optimization process with contact

Topology optimization is presently used in most diverse scientific, technologic and industrial areas, including biomechanics. Bone remodelling models and structural optimization has mutually provided inspiration for new developments in biomechanics and biomedicine. Considering that bone has the ability to adapt its internal structure to mechanical loading (Wolff’s law and Roux’s paradigm), it is possible to model the behaviour of the bone structure by the use of a topology optimization methodology whose optimization variables can be the relative densities and the orthotropic directions. In this work, the internal bone adaptation of a proximal femur is considered. The bone-remodelling scheme is numerically described by a time-dependent evolutionary procedure with anisotropic material parameters. The remodelling rate equation is obtained from the structural optimization task of maximizing the stiffness subject to a biological cost associated with metabolic maintenance of bone tissue in time. The situation of multiple load conditions is considered for a three-dimensional finite element model of the proximal femur. The bone density distribution of a real femur is used as the initial design for the onset of the remodelling mechanism. Examples of bone adaptation resulting from load changes are presented. The three-dimensional finite element model of the proximal femur with initial bone density distribution was adapted to implant a cementless stem. A remeshing technique is used to assign the bone relative density distribution to the new geometry and mesh. The time adaptation of the bone is assessed considering contact with friction at the bone-stem interface. Results of bone density evolution and osteointegration distribution are obtained.

Fiber Optic Intensity-Modulated Sensors： a Review in Biomechanics

Fiber optic sensors have a set of properties that make them very attractive in biomechanics. However, they remain unknown to many who work in the field. Some possible causes are scarce information, few research groups using them in a routine basis, and even fewer companies offering turnkey and affordable solutions. Nevertheless, as optical fibers revolutionize the way of carrying data in telecommunications, a similar trend is detectable in the world of sensing. The present review aims to describe the most relevant contributions of fiber sensing in biomechanics since their introduction, from 1960s to the present, focusing on intensity-based configurations. An effort has been made to identify key researchers, research and development （R＆D） groups and main applications.

The Effect of Granulocyte Macrophage-Colony Stimulating Factor upon the Induction of Peripheral Blood Dendritic and Natural Killer Cells When Given Simultaneously with a Slow Continuous Doxorubicin Infusion

It has been demonstrated that it is safe to give Gm-Csf, together with Doxorubicin, by continuous intravenous infusion, thereby substantially increasing the amount of Doxorubicin administered to the average patient, and assuring that each patient receives an individually-determined safe and maximal amount of drug. It is known that Gm-Csf is a potent inducer of components that are major factors in an immunologic attack upon neoplasms. For that reason, we thought it would be worth evaluating in 4 patients’ surface markers of dendritic precursor cells, dendritic cells [DC], and natural killer [NK] cells during the infusion. While there was substantial variation in individual responses, all 4 patients receiving Gm-Csf developed persistent marked increases in cells with each of these markers. The significance of these findings will be discussed.

Physiological and Phytosanitary Potentials of Coriander and Radish Seeds

Information on seed vigor of the vegetable crops is always important and necessary due to the increasing demand of high quality seeds for sowing and high-value commercial. The cultivation of these species, conducted intensively, should be established with seed high potential physiological and health for the development of a more productive and sustainable agriculture. The present study was conducted to evaluate the potential physiological of seed lots of radish and coriander. The experiment was conducted at the laboratory of seed analysis and greenhouse of the plant science department of the Federal University of Pelotas in South Brazil. Four radish seed lots, cultivar ＂Saxa＂, and four coriander seed lots, cultivar ＂Verdito＂ were used. Germination seed test, first count of germination, accelerated aging test, electrical conductivity and seedling emergence were used to evaluate the physiological quality of the lots. The experimental design was completely randomized design with five replications. Means were compared by Tukey test. The accelerated aging test was the most efficient test in assessing the physiological quality for both lots of radish seeds and coriander and this test provide coherent results with seedlings emergence.

Sintering of Pellets, Compound by Fly Ash, Clay and Charcoal in a Fixed Bed Combustion Reactor

Normally, industries in general, produce waste at its majority toxic, such as fly ash, for example, which damage the environment. The aim of this paper is to investigate the evolution of the temperature in a combustion reactor, full of pellets manufactured with fly ash, clay and charcoal powder, after sintering, to obtainment synthetic aggregates for use in civil construction. The pellets were produced in a cement mix. For realization of the work, a co-current combustion reactor was made in order to analyze the temperatures profile and investigate if the values of these temperatures would be sufficient to initiate the process of sintering of the pellets. Temperatures reached in the reactor varied in the range of 800 ℃-1,290 ℃. These values are sufficient to initiate the process of sintering of the pellets. For the experiment realized, parameters such as inlet velocity of the fluid （air）, diameters of the pellets and size of charcoal crushed in a disk mill were varied and the effect of variations of these parameters were analyzed for the experiment. The historical temperatures were recorded by a data acquisition instrument and subsequently plotted for analysis.
