Electronic structure, optical properties, and lattice dynamics in atomically thin indium selenide flakes

The progressive stacking of chalcogenide single layers gives rise to two- dimensional semiconducting materials with tunable properties that can be exploited for new field-effect transistors and photonic devices. Yet the properties of some members of the chalcogenide family remain unexplored. Indium selenide （InSe） is attractive for applications due to its direct bandgap in the near infrared, controllable p- and n-type doping and high chemical stability. Here, we reveal the lattice dynamics, optical and electronic properties of atomically thin InSe flakes prepared by micromechanical cleavage. Raman active modes stiffen or soften in the flakes depending on which electronic bonds are excited. A progressive blue-shift of the photoluminescence peaks is observed for decreasing flake thickness （as large as 0.2 eV for three single layers）. First-principles calculations predict an even larger increase in the bandgap, 0.40 eV, for three single layers, and as much as 1.1 eV for a single layer. These results are promising from the point of view of the versatility of this material for optoelectronic applications at the nanometer scale and compatible with Si and III-V technologies.

A novel simple procedure to consider seismic soil structure interaction effects in 2d models

A method is proposed to estimate the seismic soil-structure-interaction （SSI） effects for use in engineering practice. It is applicable to 2d structures subjected to vertically incident shear waves supported by homogenous half-spaces. The method is attractive since it keeps the simplicity of the spectral approach, overcomes some of the difficulties and inaccuracies of existing classical techniques and yet it considers a physically consistent excitation. This level of simplicity is achieved through a response spectra modification factor that can be applied to the free-field 5%-damped response spectra to yield design spectral ordinates that take into account the scattered motions introduced by the interaction effects. The modification factor is representative of the Transfer Function （TF） between the structural relative displacements and the free- field motion, which is described in terms of its maximum amplitude and associated frequency. Expressions to compute the modification factor by practicing engineers are proposed based upon a parametric study using 576 cases representative of actual structures. The method is tested in 10 cases spanning a wide range of common fundamental vibration periods.

Models and observations of sunspot penumbrae

The mysteries of sunspot penumbrae have been under an intense scrutiny for the past 10 years. during this time, some models have been proposed and refuted, while the surviving ones had to be modified, adapted and evolved to explain the ever-increasing array of observational constraints. In this contribution I will review two of the present models, emphasizing their contributions to this field, but also pinpointing some of their inadequacies to explain a number of recent observations at very high spatial resolution (0.32 ). To help explaining these new observations I propose some modifications to each of those models. These modifications bring those two seemingly opposite models closer together into a general picture that agrees well with recent 3d magneto-hydrodynamic simulations.

Background:Black alder(Alnus glutinosa)forests are in severe decline across their area of distribution due to a disease caused by the soil-borne pathogenic phytophthora alni species complex(class Oomycetes),“alder phytopththora”.Mapping of the different types of damages caused by the disease is challenging in high density ecosystems in which spectral variability is high due to canopy *** obtained by unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs)may be particularly useful for such tasks due to the high resolution,flexibility of acquisition and cost efficiency of this type of *** this study,*** decline was assessed by considering four categories of tree health status in the field:asymptomatic,dead and defoliation above and below a 50% threshold.A combination of multispectral parrot Sequoia and UAV unmanned aerial vehicles-red green blue(RGB)data were analysed using classical random forest(RF)and a simple and robust three-step logistic modelling approaches to identify the most important forest health indicators while adhering to the principle of parsimony.A total of 34 remote sensing variables were considered,including a set of vegetation indices,texture features from the normalized difference vegetation index(NdVI)and a digital surface model(dSM),topographic and digital aerial photogrammetry-derived structural data from the dSM at crown ***:The four categories identified by the RF yielded an overall accuracy of 67%,while aggregation of the legend to three classes(asymptomatic,defoliated,dead)and to two classes(alive,dead)improved the overall accuracy to 72% and 91% *** the other hand,the confusion matrix,computed from the three logistic models by using the leave-out cross-validation method yielded overall accuracies of 75%,80% and 94% for four-,three-and two-level classifications,***:The study findings provide forest managers with an alternative robust classification method for the rapid,effective assessment of area

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLd)is the leading cause of chronic liver disease in the western world(1).Currently,the global prevalence of NAFLd is estimated at 30%and is notably higher in South America and the Middle East(1).NAFLd prevalence has been rising during the last decades,and cases of decompensated NAFLd cirrhosis could increase by 168%in 2030(Figure 1A)(2).These trends are probably explained by several factors including the decrease in viral hepatitis incidence and the increasing prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2dM)among the general population(2).

Characteristics of the dynamic distribution of suspended particles in the flocculation process

polyaluminium chloride (pAC) synthetic water was selected as a coagulant and kaolin suspension particles as objects to be removed. Online instruments such as the turbidimeter and particle counter were employed to monitor the flocculation process online and collect test data. The aim of the experiments was to study the dynamic distribution characteristics of suspension particles in the flocculation process. The 3d flow field in the reacting vessel was also simulated at different slow stirring speeds. The experiments showed that particle collision and aggregation in the flocculation process is in compliance with the Sutherland cluster aggregation model. This study further indicated that under appropriate hydrodynamic conditions, the distribution of turbulent flow in the reactor could be improved to increase the odds of effective particle collision and restrain the breakup of formed flocs by vortex shearing force. A good flocculation effect could therefore be produced.

Effect of Aerobic Exercise on protein Expression in Muscle of Obese Mexican Adolescents: A proteomic and Bioinformatic Analysis

The beneficial effects of exercise have been recognized for many years yet the molecular mechanisms by which exercise show benefits on health are still elusive. A combination of experimental and bioinformatics approaches can be an invaluable tool to increase the cellular understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the aerobic exercise in obese adolescents. Muscle skeletal proteins were separated by 2d-pAGE and changes in protein expression were revealed by ImageMaster 2d platinum analysis software. proteins with expression changes after aerobic exercise were identified by comparison with 2d maps from SWISS-2dpAGE and interactions of proteins were analyzed with STRING and dAVId databases. After aerobic exercise, all participants decreased glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, body mass index and waist circumference. proteomic differential analysis revealed 10 overexpressed proteins after aerobic training, which correspond to carbonic anhydrase III, beta enolase, creatine kinase, ATp synthase beta subunit, aldolase A, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, triosephosphate isomerase, pyruvate kinase, lactate dehydrogenase and adenylate kinase. Exercise increased glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation pathways, which is likely to be regulated by ubiquitin c protein. In conclusion, our analysis suggested that obese adolescents show changes in their body mass index, waist circumference and serum glucose after aerobic exercise through improved protein expression patterns that aid, especially, glucose metabolism and increase the oxidative phosphorylation. The most likely explanation for the observed pattern is that ubiquitin c protein keeps the glycolytic enzymes bound within skeletal muscle, obtaining a non-degradative role in cell signaling.

AIMTo analyze the diagnostic yield (dY), therapeutic impact (TI) and safety of capsule endoscopy (CE).METHOdSThis is a multi-centre, observational, analytical, retrospective study. A total of 163 patients with suspicion of celiac disease (Cd) (mean age = 46.4 ± 17.3 years, 68.1% women) who underwent CE from 2003 to 2015 were included. patients were divided into four groups: seronegative Cd with atrophy (Group-I, n = 19), seropositive Cd without atrophy (Group-II, n = 39), contraindication to gastroscopy (Group-III, n = 6), seronegative Cd without atrophy, but with a compatible context (Group-IV, n = 99). dY, TI and the safety of CE were *** overall dY was 54% and the final diagnosis was villous atrophy (n = 65, 39.9%), complicated Cd (n = 12, 7.4%) and other enteropathies (n = 11, 6.8%; 8 Crohn’s). dY for groups I to IV was 73.7%, 69.2%, 50% and 44.4%, respectively. Atrophy was located in duodenum in 24 cases (36.9%), diffuse in 19 (29.2%), jejunal in 11 (16.9%), and patchy in 10 cases (15.4%). Factors associated with a greater dY were positive serology (68.3% vs 49.2%, p = 0.034) and older age (p = 0.008). On the other hand, neither sex nor clinical presentation, family background, positive histology or HLA status were associated with dY. CE results changed the therapeutic approach in 71.8% of the cases. Atrophy was associated with a greater TI (92.3% vs 45.3%, p d 81.9% of the patients responded to diet. There was one case of capsule retention (0.6%). Agreement between CE findings and subsequent histology was 100% for diagnosing normal/other conditions, 70% for suspected Cd and 50% for complicated *** has a high dY in cases of suspicion of Cd and it leads to changes in the clinical course of the disease. CE is safe procedure with a high degree of concordance with histology and it helps in the differential diagnosis of Cd.
