AIM: To study a cohort of consecutive patients under-going transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and compare the outcomes of atrial fibrillation (AF) patients vs patients in sinus rhythm (SR). METHODS: All consecutive patients undergoing TAVI in our hospital were included. The AF group comprised patients in AF at the time of TAVI or with history of AF, and were compared with the SR group. Procedural, echocardiographic and follow-up variables were compared. likewise, the CHA 2 DS 2-VASC stroke risk score and HAS-BlED bleeding risk score and antithrombotic treatment at discharge in AF patients were compared with that in SR patients. RESUlTS: From a total of 34 patients undergoing TAVI, 17 (50%) were allocated to the AF group, of whom 15 (88%) were under chronic oral anticoagulation. Patients in the AF group were similar to those in the SR group except for a trend (P = 0.07) for a higher logistic EuroSCORE (28% vs 19%), and a higher prevalence of hypertension (82% vs 53%) and chronic renal failure (17% vs 0%). Risk of both stroke and bleeding was high in the AF group (mean CHA 2 DS 2-VASC 4.3, mean HAS-BlED 2.9). In the AF group, treatment at discharge included chronic oral anticoagulation in all except one case, and in association with an antiplatelet drug in 57% of patients. During a mean follow-up of 11 mo (maximum 32), there were only two strokes, none of them during the peri-procedural period: one in the AF group at 30 mo and one in the SR group at 3 mo. There were no statistical differences in procedural success, and clinical outcome (survival at 1 year 81% vs 74% in AF and SR groups, respectively, P = NS). CONClUSION: Patients in AF undergoing TAVI show a trend to a higher surgical risk. However, in our cohort, patients in AF did not have a higher stroke rate compared to the SR group, and the prognosis was similar in both groups.

Investigation of Chemical Bath Deposition of ZnO Nanocrystals Thin Films Using Different ZnNO3 Concentration

In this work, thin films growth at different ZnNO3 concentrations: 0.02 M, 0.03 M and 0.04 M by chemical bath deposition (CBD) as-prepared on glass substrates at 80 °C ± 2 °C. Patterns Diffraction x-ray (DRX) shown peaks 2θ = (31.72, 32.769, 34.36, 36.10, 47.44, 56.52, 62.78, 67.84 and 69.02), at concentration 0.02 M show formation from hydrozincite [Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6]. The optical band gap shifts from 3.8 eV to 3.6 eV. Photoluminescence (Pl) spectra show intensity variation of the green emission (GE) may be resulted from variation of the intrinsic defect in ZnO films, such zinc vacancy (VZn), oxygen vacancy (VO), and interstitial zinc (Zni), interstitial oxygen (Oi). The presence of defects in our samples is responsible for the observed broad visible Pl bands; this indicates reductions of oxygen vacancies and increase of oxygen interstitials. It could be believed that the presence of defects in samples is responsible for the observed broad visible Pl band. The concentration increased the visible defect luminescence, which might be due to improvement to sample stoichiometric. The presence of both green emission (GE) and yellow emission (YE) can be seen through the deconvolution of the defect increasing the concentration, the position of the GE shifted from 1.96-2.45 eV and the increase of its intensity. The shifts of these two visible Pl bands might be due to changes in local environments of the defects centers in samples due to increased concentration. Therefore, the GE relate to donor levels dominated due to increase of oxygen vacancies. ZnO is an n-type semiconductor and it means that most defects are Zn interstitials and oxygen vacancies. Raman spectra showed increase of the 437 cm-1 (E2 mode) peak intensity due concentration 0.4 M.

Design and Experimentation of a 1 MW Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine

In this work was carried out the aerodynamics design of a 1 MW horizontal axis wind turbine by using blade element momentum theory (BEM). The generated design was scaled and built for testing purposes in the discharge of an axial flow fan of 80 cm in diameter. Strip theory was used for the aerodynamic performance evaluation. In the numerical calculations was conducted a comparative analysis of the performance curves adding increasingly correction factors to the original equation of ideal flow to reduce the error regarding real operating values got by the experimental tests. Correction factors introduced in the ideal flow equation were the tip loss factor and drag coefficient. BEM results showed good approximation using experimental data for the tip speed ratio less than design. The best approximation of the power coefficient calculation was for tip speed ratio less than 6. BEM method is a tool for practical calculation and can be used for the design and evaluation of wind turbines when the flow rate is not too turbulent and radial velocity components are negligible.

Temporal Variation of the Pelagic Copepod Community in Acapulco Bay, México

Between September 2009 and April 2010, superficial samples of plankton were collected in Acapulco Bay, using 150-μm mesh net, with the objective of studying the temporal variation in the abundance, species composition of the copepod community, and their relationship with some environmental parameters. Twenty-nine species of four orders were identified: 11 of Calanoida, 4 of Cyclopoida, 3 of Harpacticoida and 11 of Poecilostomatoida. A multivariate analysis (PCA) used to detect association between the abundance of copepod populations, and the environmental conditions through time, indicates a marked effect of the temperature and salinity parameters, on the abundance of the four copepod groups. The calanoids dominated numerically during most of the sampling months. The more important copepods genus were Corycaeus (7 species), andOithona (4 species). Nevertheless that the abundance of all copepod groups was affected temporarily by variations in the environmental conditions, the species composition inside the copepods community remained very stable.

Interferon Regulatory Factor 5 and Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System Polymorphisms in Coronary Artery Disease: An Overview of Experimental and Clinical Studies

Heart diseases are the main cause of mortality in Mexico, being coronary heart disease the most frequent in the country. Its high prevalence makes important the study of the pathophysiology and the search for prognostic factors. Different genes and polymorphisms promote atherogenesis and coronary artery disease, they affect inflammatory and vascular pathological processes. le="font-family:Verdana;">Interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) is associated with coronary heart disease, it promotes chronic inflammation and cytokines release;it could trigger immune reactions and its activating receptors express in the vascular endothelium. Besides, polymorphisms in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) are implied with coronary disease, they are found in angiotensinogen (AGT), angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), angiotensin II type 2 receptor (AT2R), and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) genes. These genetic polymorphisms are associated with a prothrombotic state, endothelial dysfunction, and immune activation. Multiple experimental studies showed that chronic activation of RAAS and chronic expression of IRF5 generates an environment prone to the development of atherosclerosis, and autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases. Studying these specific genes and their relationship with coronary heart disease will allow a better understanding of the pathological process and possibly the quest for new treatments.

Evidence of Correlation between High Frequency Geomagnetic Variations and Seismicity in the Caribbean

An analysis between the hourly distribution of earthquakes in three areas of the Caribbean and the high-frequency variations of the geomagnetic field is presented. The number of earthquakes selected for each zone is between 10,000 and 43,000, which guarantees a statistically significant distribution. The hourly distributions of seismicity in all areas show a bay-shape distribution with a significant increase in the number of earthquakes at night, from 11 PM to 5 AM. For example, in eastern Cuba 36.7% of earthquakes occur at that time, representing 11.7% over 25% in the absence of any time preference. Geomagnetic disturbances were compiled from several years to be able to make a statistically significant hourly distribution of their occurrence, being determined by sudden changes in the magnetic field at a short period of 1 minute. In this sense, geomagnetic data were processed between the years 2011-2016, recorded by the geostationary satellite GOES13 and the magnetic ground station SJG in San juan, Puerto Rico. The result shows a significant correlation between hourly earthquakes distribution and high-frequency le="font-family:Verdana;">geomagnetic variations. The time-varying conductivity response of Earth’s interior also correlates with seismicity. The theory behind this correlation could be related to the piezoelectric phenomena and the electromagnetic force induced when the magnetic field is disturbed.

The Density and Momentum Distributions of 2-Dimensional Transonic Flow in an lP-Steam Turbine

Within turbine blade rows, particularly for cascades of high deflection angle, cross-channel gradients of steam properties may be appreciable. To determine the effects on spontaneous condensation of gradients of supersaturation normal to streamlines, the conservation equations can be incorporated in a two dimensional calculation procedure. With the help of program FORTRAN 90 a developed computational program of calculations is accomplished, whose results are communicated to the pressure and Mach number distribution, direction of flow and streamlines in the field and the drops distribution in the outlet of the stator blade mesh. The procedure contains a program section, which avoids difficulties in the strongly curved profile of the leading and trailing edge by a developed computational mesh construction.

Objective:long-term survivors(lS)of non-small cell lung cancer(NSClC)without driver alterations,displaying an overall survival(OS)of more than 3 years,comprise around 10%of cases in several series treated with *** are classical prognosis factors for these cases[stage,Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group(ECOG),etc.],but more data are required in the *** this multi-center study,we focused on lS of advanced NSClC with OS above 36 months to perform a clinical-pathological and molecular ***:In the first step,we conducted a clinical-pathological characterization of the ***,we carried out a genetic analysis by comparing lS to a sample of short-term survivors(SS)(with an OS less than 9 months).We initially used whole-genome RNA-seq to identify differentiating profiles of lS and SS,and later confirmed these with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)for the rest of the ***:A total of 94 patients were included,who were mainly men,former smokers,having adenocarcinoma(AC)-type NSClC with an ECOG of *** obtained an initial differential transcriptome expression,displaying 5 over-and 33 under-expressed genes involved in different pathways:namely,the secretin receptor,surfactant protein,trefoil factor 1(T FF1),serpin,Ca-channels,and Tolllike receptor(TlRs)***,RT-PCR analysis of 40(20 lS/20 SS)samples confirmed that four genes(surfactant proteins and SFTP)were significantly down-regulated in SS compared to lS by using an analysis of covariance(ANCOVA)model:SFTPA1(P=0.023),SFTPA2(P=0.027),SFTPB{P=0.02),and SFT PC(P=0.047).Conclusions:We present a sequential genetic analysis of a sample of NSClClS with no driver alterations,obtaining a differential RNA-seq/RT-PCR profile showing an abnormal expression of SF genes.

Traditional mining activities are usually correlated with high levels of soil pollution, which is a major environmental concern. Extensive mining activities have taken place in the San Joaquin region in the State of Querétaro, México resulting in high levels of mercury soil pollution (up to 1532 ± 300 mg/kg). We isolated mercury-resistant fungal strains from the San Joaquin region soils and identified them through morphologic characteristics and ITS rDNA region sequence analysis. We determined that fungi isolated belong to the genus Trichoderma. All the isolates selected showed the ability to catalyze the volatilization of Hg. For air sampling, an active sampling device was constructed and using acid KMnO4 as an absorbent, the concentration of mercury in solution was determined through the cold vapor atomic absorption method. The results show mercury volatilization from the fungal species assay, with a maximum of 213.04 ± 32.6 μg/m3 while mycelium accumulation ranged from less than 17.5 ± 2.9 to 20.0 ± 3.4 μg/g. The fungal isolates were also evaluated for their ability to reduce mercury uptake in Arabidopsis thaliana. These observations suggest the utility of Trichoderma for the mobilization of mercury in those contaminated soils.
