Gustatory responsiveness in Vespula germanica workers:exploring the interplay between sensory perception and task specialization

Workers'task specialization and division of labor are critical features of social insects'ecological success.It has been proposed that the division of labor relies on response threshold models:individuals varying their sensitivity(and responsiveness)to biologically relevant stimuli and performing a specific task when a stimulus exceeds an internal threshold.In this work,we study carbohydrate and protein responsiveness and their relation to worker task specialization in Vespula germanica,an invasive social wasp.The sucrose and peptone responsiveness of two different subcastes,preforagers and foragers,was determined by stimulating the antenna of the wasps with increasing concentrations of the solution and quantifying whether each concentration elicited a licking response.We studied responsiveness in five different ways:(1)response threshold,(2)concentration 50(concentration to which at least 50%of wasps responded),(3)maximum response,(4)mean scores and(5)median scores.Our results suggest that V germanica foragers are more sensitive to sucrose(lower thresholds)than preforager workers.However,we found no differences for peptone thresholds(i.e.,a protein resource).Nonetheless,this is the first study to investigate response thresholds for protein resources.The intercaste variation in sucrose responsiveness shown in our work contributes to the existing knowledge about response threshold theory as a mechanism for task specialization observed in V germanica.

Temporal stability and directional change in a color cline of a marine snail from NW Spain

The evolution and maintenance of color clines is a classic topic of research in evolutionary ecology.However,studies analyzing the temporal dynamics of such clines are much less frequent,due to the difficulty of obtaining reliable data about past color distributions along environmen-tal gradients.In this article,we describe a case of decades-long temporal stability and directional change in a color cline of the marine snail Littorina saxatilis along the coastal inlet of the Ria de Vigo(NW Spain).L.saxatilis from this area shows a clear color cline with 3 distinct areas from the innermost to the more wave-exposed localities of the Ria:the inner,protected localities show an abundance of fawn-like individuals;the intermediate localities show a high diversity of colors;and the outer,wave-exposed localities show populations with a high frequency of a black and lineated morph.We compare data from the 1970s and 2022 in the same localities,showing that the cline has kept relatively stable for at least over half a century,except for some directional change and local variability in the frequency of certain morphs.Multiple regression analyses and biodiversity measures are presented to provide clues into the selective pressures that might be involved in the maintenance of this color cline.Future research avenues to properly test the explanatory power of these selective agents as well as the possible origins of the cline are discussed.

Design and selection of advanced protection schemes have become essential for reliable and secure operation of networked microgrids.Various protection schemes that allow correct operation of microgrids have been proposed for individual systems in different topologies and connections.Nevertheless,protection schemes for networked microgrids are still in devel-opment,and further research is required to design and operate advanced protection in interconnected systems.Interconnection of these microgrids in different nodes with various intercon-nection technologies increases fault occurrence and complicates protection operation.This paper aims to point out challenges in developing protection for networked microgrids,potential solutions,and research areas that need to be addressed for their development.First,this article presents a systematic analysis of different microgrid clusters proposed since 2016,including several architectures of networked microgrids,operation modes,components,and utilization of renewable sources,which have not been widely explored in previous review papers.Second,the paper presents a discussion on protection systems currently available for microgrid clusters,current challenges,and solutions that have been proposed for these systems.Finally,it discusses the trend of protection schemes in networked microgrids and presents some conclusions related to implementation.IndexTerms—Adaptive eprotection,microgrid cluster,microgrid,multiple microgrid,networked microgrid,real-time simulation,smart grid.

Anoplophora glabripennis(Asian longhorn beetle,ALB)and Anoplophora chinensis(citrus longhorn beetle,cLB)are native forest pests in china;they have become important international quarantine pests.They are found using the same Salix aureopendula host tree of cixi,Zhejiang province,china.On this host tree,we collected additional beetles that appeared to be morphologically intermediate between ALB and cLB.By using a stereoscope,we observed that there were several bumps on the base of the elytra,which was inconsistent with ALB,which typically has a smooth elytral base,but was more like cLB,which has numerous short tubercles on the elytral base.Given their sympatry and intermediate morphology,we hypothesized that these may represent ALB×cLB hybrids.We studied the genomic profiles for 46 samples(ALB,cLB,and putative hybrids)using genotyping-by-sequencing(GBS)providing a reduced representation of the entire genome.Employing principal component analyses on the 163 GBS-derived single nucleotide polymorphism data,we found putative hybrids tightly clustered with ALB,but genetically distinct from the cLB individuals.Therefore,our initial hybrid hypothesis was not supported by genomic data.Further,while mating experiments between adult ALB and cLB were successful in 4 separate years(2017,2018,2020,and 2021),and oviposition behavior was observed,no progeny was produced.Having employed population genomic analysis and biological hybridization experiments,we conclude that the putative hybrids represent newly discovered morphological variants within ALB.Our approach further confirmed the advantage of genome-wide information for Anoplophora species assignment in certain ambiguous classification cases.

Asperuloside Promotes Apoptosis of cervical cancer cells through Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress-Mitochondrial Pathway

Objective: To investigate the effects of asperuloside on cervical cancer based on endoplasmic reticulum(ER) stress and mitochondrial pathway. Methods: Different doses(12.5–800 μg/mL) of asperuloside were used to treat cervical cancer cell lines Hela and caSki to calculate the half maximal inhibitory concentration(Ic_(50)) of asperuloside. The cell proliferation was analyzed by clone formation assay. cell apoptosis, intracellular reactive oxygen species(ROS) and mitochondrial membrane potential were determined by flow cytometry. The protein expressions of cleaved-caspase-3, Bcl-2, Bax, cyt-c, cleaved-caspase-4 and glucose-regulated protein 78(GRP78) were analyzed by Western blot. And the inhibitor of ER stress, 4-phenyl butyric acid(4-PBA) was used to treat cervical cancer cells to further verify the role of ER stress in the apoptosis of cervical cancer cells induced by asperuloside. Results: Asperuloside of 325, 650, and 1300 μg/mL significantly inhibited the proliferation and promoted apoptosis of Hela and caSki cells(Pcantly increased intracellular ROS levels, reduced mitochondrial membrane potential, significantly reduced Bcl-2 protein expression level, and increased Bax, cyt-c, GRP78 and cleaved-caspase-4 expressions(Pcantly promoted cell proliferation and reduced apoptosis(Pcould reverse 4-PBA-induced increased cell proliferation, decreased apoptosis and cleaved-caspase-3,-4 and GRP78 protein expressions(Pconclusion: Our study revealed the role of asperuloside in cervical cancer, suggesting that asperuloside promotes apoptosis of cervical cancer cells through ER stress-mitochondrial pathway.

In this article,we consider the long-time behavior of extensible beams with nonlocal weak damping:ε(t)u_(tt)+Δ^(2)u-m(‖▽u‖^(2))Δu+‖u_(t)‖^(p_(u_(t)))+f(u)=h,whereε(t)is a decreasing function vanishing at infinity.Within the theory of process on time-dependent spaces,we investigate the existence of the time-dependent attractor by using the condition(c_(t))method and more detailed estimates.The results obtained essentially improve and complete some previous works.

E2E-MFERc:AMulti-Face Expression Recognition Model for Group Emotion Assessment

In smart classrooms, conducting multi-face expression recognition based on existing hardware devices to assessstudents’ group emotions can provide educators with more comprehensive and intuitive classroom effect analysis,thereby continuouslypromotingthe improvementof teaching quality.However,most existingmulti-face expressionrecognition methods adopt a multi-stage approach, with an overall complex process, poor real-time performance,and insufficient generalization ability. In addition, the existing facial expression datasets are mostly single faceimages, which are of low quality and lack specificity, also restricting the development of this research. This paperaims to propose an end-to-end high-performance multi-face expression recognition algorithm model suitable forsmart classrooms, construct a high-quality multi-face expression dataset to support algorithm research, and applythe model to group emotion assessment to expand its application value. To this end, we propose an end-to-endmulti-face expression recognition algorithm model for smart classrooms (E2E-MFERc). In order to provide highqualityand highly targeted data support for model research, we constructed a multi-face expression dataset inreal classrooms (MFED), containing 2,385 images and a total of 18,712 expression labels, collected from smartclassrooms. In constructing E2E-MFERc, by introducing Re-parameterization visual geometry group (RepVGG)block and symmetric positive definite convolution (SPD-conv) modules to enhance representational capability;combined with the cross stage partial network fusion module optimized by attention mechanism (c2f_Attention),it strengthens the ability to extract key information;adopts asymptotic feature pyramid network (AFPN) featurefusion tailored to classroomscenes and optimizes the head prediction output size;achieves high-performance endto-end multi-face expression detection. Finally, we apply the model to smart classroom group emotion assessmentand provide design references for classroom effect analysis evaluation

covalent organic frameworks(cOFs) are a potential platform for carbon dioxide(cO_(2)) conversion owing to their periodic permanent porosity,adjustable structure,and chemical stability.For good catalytic performance in cO_(2) conversion,collaborative multifunctions should be strategically integrated into the catalytic system design and construction.In this study,a four-in-one high-efficiency catalyst was synthesized and tested for cO_(2) cycloaddition to form cyclic carbonate.The obtained Tp-MPB-BrcOF had a high nitrogen content,which enhanced its cO_(2) affinity through substantial Lewis acid-base or dipole-quadrupole interactions;moreover,the acid(protons transferring from oxygen(–OH) to nitrogen(–NH)),hydrogen bond donor(hydroxyl group),and Br-(nucleophile group) served as three active sites,further improving the catalyst activity.These results provide a basis for designing efficient and stable cO_(2)-conversion catalysts.

Dominance of transposable element‑related satDNAs results in great complexity of“satDNA library”and invokes the extension towards“repetitive DNA library”

Research on bivalves is fast-growing,including genome-wide analyses and genome sequencing.Several characteristics qualify oysters as a valuable model to explore repetitive DNA sequences and their genome organization.Here we char-acterize the satellitomes of five species in the family Ostreidae(crassostrea angulata,c.virginica,c.hongkongensis,c.ariakensis,Ostrea edulis),revealing a substantial number of satellite DNAs(satDNAs)per genome(ranging between 33 and 61)and peculiarities in the composition of their satellitomes.Numerous satDNAs were either associated to or derived from transposable elements,displaying a scarcity of transposable element-unrelated satDNAs in these genomes.Due to the non-conventional satellitome constitution and dominance of Helitron-associated satDNAs,comparative satellitomics demanded more in-depth analyses than standardly employed.comparative analyses(including c.gigas,the first bivalve species with a defined satellitome)revealed that 13 satDNAs occur in all six oyster genomes,with cg170/HindIII satDNA being the most abundant in all of them.Evaluating the“satDNA library model”highlighted the necessity to adjust this term when studying tandem repeat evolution in organisms with such satellitomes.When repetitive sequences with potential variation in the organizational form and repeat-type affiliation are examined across related species,the introduction of the terms“TE library”and“repetitive DNA library”becomes essential.
