AIM: To investigate the protective effects of electroacupuncture (EA) pretreatment on acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)-induced ulceration in rats. METHODS: We randomly divided 72 rats into three groups including control (administered with distilled water), ASA group (administered 100 mg/kg ASA) and EA group (administered EA + 100 mg/kg ASA). Each rat was fasted for 18 to 24 h before experimentation, and lesion scores, gastric acidity, cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and -2 mRNA levels, and total nitric oxide (NO) concentration were measured. RESULTS: The lesion scores of the EA group were significantly lower than those of the ASA group. Gastric acidity of the ASA and EA groups was reduced compar.d to the control group. COX-1 and -2 mRNA levels were significantly increased in the EA group as compar.d to the control and ASA groups, and NO levels were also significantly increased in the EA group as compar.d to the ASA group. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that EA-mediated protection against ASA-induced ulceration in rats may occur via gastric defense components.

Distant skeletal muscle metastasis from intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma presenting as Budd-Chiari syndrome

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is a malignant neoplasm arising from the biliary epithelium, which frequently invades adjacent organs or metastasizes to other visceral organs such as the lungs, bones, adrenals, and brain. However, distant skeletal muscle metastasis of cholangiocarcinoma has never been described before to the best of our knowledge and, furthermore, Budd-Chiari syndrome secondary to intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is also extremely rare. Here we present the first case overall of distant muscle metastasis from intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma presenting as Budd-Chiari syndrome. A 44-year-old man admitted to the hospital with complaints of abdominal distension, edema of both legs, back pain and anorexia of 30 d' duration. Computed tomography and ultrasonography-guided percutaneous muscle biopsy established intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma with disseminated thrombosis from inferior vena cava to bilateral iliac and femoral veins, and multiple skeletal muscle metastases in bilateral buttock and erector spinal muscle.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by elevated immunoglobulin E (IgE), mast cell infiltration and skin lesions including pruritus, erythema and eczema. Cudrania tricuspidata extracts have been clinically administered for a long time in the East Asia including Korean and China as a home-remedy to diminish the inflammation of gastritis and hepatitis. To examine whether it works on AD or not, an AD-like animal model was experimented in this study. AD was induced by applying Dermatophagoides farinae (D. farinae) extract to the backs of 9-week old NC/Nga mice for 21 days. Following this, an ethanol extract of C. tricuspidata stems (EECT) was applied topically for 14 days to the sensitized skin, while distilled water was used as a control (EECT0 mice). Anti-AD effects of EECT were evaluated using scores for AD-like skin lesions, serum IgE levels and mast cell counts in the skin dermal layers to assess inflammation. Topically applied ethanol extract of Cudrania tricuspidata stems (EECT 7.5, 25 and 75 mg/mL) markedly reduced AD-like skin lesions after 4 days (by 30.1%, 31.4% and 38.5%, respectively) and also after 14 days (by 63.6%, 66.1% and 49.6%, respectively), while distilled water improved AD by 17.8% and 38.7%, respectively (p D. farinae extract (p = 0.003) and EECT attenuated the mast cell overproduction, and reduced mast cell degranulation markedly. Attenuation was most obvious in the early stage of EECT treatment when the AD was most acute.

Background Smoking and other risk factors have been well known as important factors of variant angina or coronary artery spasm （CAS）. However, clinical features related to age on coronary artery spasm have been rarely evaluated. Methods We evaluated 3155 consecutive patients with insignificant coronary artery lesion. Patients underwent Acetylcholine （Ach） provocation test for induction of CAS. CAS was defined as 〉 70% luminal narrowing of coronary arteries during Ach provocation test. The results of Ach provocation test were compar.d among age groups; 〈 45 years （Group 1）, 45-54 years （Group 2）, 55-64 years （Group 3）, and 〉_ 65 years （Group 4）. Results Older patients had higher incidence of hypertension, diabetes, but lower incidence rate of current smoking, male sex compar.d with younger patients. Positive Ach provocation test finding was frequently showed with aging （47.36% vs. 58.3% vs. 62.6% vs. 61.5%; P 〈 0.001）. Multivariate logistic analysis showed that age, male, and myocardial bridge were independent predictors of CAS induced by Ach provocation test. Conclusion Our present study showed that old age was independent predictor for Ach-induced significant coronary artery spasm.

The bare metal stent (BMS) used in the blood vessel caused the restenosis after the operation due to formation and proliferation of neointimal. Recently, as a method to overcome the problems of BMS, drug eluting stent (DES) is developed and being applied to human body which has drug reducing restenosis applied on the metal surface. DES has the advantage of greatly reducing the restenosis after the operation;however, metal stent remains in the body after the drug is released causing issues such as late thrombosis and restenosis so that currently the attention is increasing for biodegradable materials that reduce restenosis and thrombosis by degrading as a certain amount of time passes after the drug is released by the stent material. In this review, the study trend of biodegradable stent will be explained.

Experiences of Counselors Who Provided Psychological Support during COVID-19 Disaster: A Qualitative Study

Anti-inflammatory activity of ginsenosides in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells

Ginsenosides, the main active constituents of Panax ginseng Meyer （P. ginseng）, have potential therapeutic effects. All tested ginsenosides except gin- senoside F1 have previously been reported in inflammation studies using the RAW 264.7 macrophage cell line. We ex- amined the anti-inflammatory effects of single sugar moiety ginsenosides such as compound K （CK）, Rh2, Rhl, and F1 that were isolated from P. ginseng through in silico docking studies. We investigated their biological activity predictions, including absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity and PASS properties, on the suppression of NF- κB, followed by in vitro validation in lipopolysaccharide （LPS）-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. The molecular docking results of our study showed that all treated ginsenosides are non-toxic and may be drug-like molecules. The molecular binding interactions of these ginsenosides with the active residues of NF-κB noticeably support their anti-inflammatory activity. CK and Rhl sig- nificantly reduced the production of nitric oxide, cyclooxy- genase-2 （COX-2）, and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as prostaglandin E2 and tumor necrosis factor alpha （TNF-α） in a dose-dependent manner. Real-time PCR and Western blot analyses further confirmed that protopanaxadiols （PPDs） and protopanaxatriols （PPTs） inhibitory effects may have been due to the down-regulation of TNF-α, inducible nitric oxide synthase, COX2, nuclear factor kappa B （NF-κB）, and I kappa B kinase. The expression of co-stimulatory molecules such as ROS was also inhibited by CK and Rhl in a dose- dependent manner. Furthermore, activation of NF-κB in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages was significantly suppressed by CK and Rhl. Taken together, these results provide evidence that PPD- and PPT-type ginsenosides in- cluding CK and Rhl may exhibit strong anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting pro-inflammatory mediators through down-regulation of NF-κB.
