the ideal treatment modality for metastatic cancer would be a local treatment that can destroy primary tumors while inducing an effective systemic anti-tumor *** this end,we de-veloped laser immunotherapy,combining photothermal laser application with an immunoadju-vant for the treatment of metastatic ***,to enhance the selective photothermal effect,we integrated light-absorbing nanomaterials into this innovative ***,we developed an immunologically modified carbon nanotube combining single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNts)with the immunoadjuvant glycated chitosan(GC).to determine the ef-fectiveness of laser iradiation,a series of experiments were performed using two different irra-diation durations-5 and 10 *** were inoculated with DMBA-4 cancer cells,a metastatic cancer cell *** treatment group of rats receiving laser irradiation for 10 min had a 50%long-term survival rate without residual primary or metastatic *** treatment group of rats receiving laser irradiation for 5 min had no long-term survivors;all rats died with multiple metastases at several distant ***,Laser+SWNt-GC treatment with 10 min of laser irradiation proved to be efective at reducing tumor size and inducing long-term anti-tumor immunity.

BACKGROUND In the Spring of 2020,residency programs across the country experienced rapid and drastic changes to their application process as a result of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)*** response,residency programs shifted to virtual events and began harnessing social media to communicate with *** to analyze the changes in social media usage by orthopaedic surgery programs in response to the COVID-19 *** Based on the 2019 residency and fellowship electronic database,accredited US orthopaedic surgery programs were reviewed for social media presence on Instagram and *** 47000 tweets from 2011-2021 were extracted through the twitter application programming *** extracted:total number of followers,accounts following,tweets,likes,date of account creation,hashtags,and *** language processing was utilized for tweet sentiment analysis and classified as positive,neutral,or *** data was collected and deemed current as of August 11,*** account foundation date analysis was based on the date recognized as the start of the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States,before or after March 1,*** A total of 85(42.3%)orthopaedic surgery residency program twitter handles were ***-five(41.2%)programs joined twitter in the nine months after the 2020 covid *** 2020,there was a 126.6%increase in volume of tweets by orthopaedic surgery residency accounts as compared to *** median number of followers was 474.5(interquartile range 205.0-796.5).the account with the highest number of tweets was Hospital for Special Surgery(@HSpecialSurgery)with 13776 tweets followed by University of Virginia(@UVA_Ortho)with 5063 and Yale(@OrthoAtYale)with *** analysis before 2020 revealed 30.4%positive,60.8%neutral,and 8.8%negative sentiments across ***,the positive sentiment percentage increased in 2020 from 30.4%to 34.5%.Of the 201 ACGME-accredited ortho

Nonlinearly Coupled KdV Equations Describing the Interaction of Equatorial and Midlatitude Rossby Waves

Amplitude equations governing the nonlinear resonant interaction of equatorial baroclinic and barotropic Rossby waves were derived by Majda and Biello and used as a model for long range interactions （teleconnections） between the tropical and midlatitude troposphere. An overview of that derivation is nonlinear wave theory, but not in atmospheric presented and geared to readers versed in sciences. In the course of the derivation, two other sets of asymptotic equations are presented： the long equatorial wave equations and the weakly nonlinear, long equatorial wave equations. A linear transformation recasts the amplitude equations as nonlinear and linearly coupled KdV equations governing the amplitude of two types of modes, each of which consists of a coupled tropical/midlatitude flow. In the limit of Rossby waves with equal dispersion, the transformed amplitude equations become two KdV equations coupled only through nonlinear fluxes. Four numerical integrations are presented which show （i） the interaction of two solitons, one from either mode, （ii） and （iii） the interaction of a soliton in the presence of different mean wind shears, and （iv） the interaction of two solitons mediated by the presence of a mean wind shear.

Vitamin D deficiency in critically ill patients with traumatic injuries

Background:Vitamin D depletion has been associated with increased rate of infections,lengthened hospital stay,and worsened mortality for critically ill *** purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and variables associated with vitamin D deficiency in critically ill patients with severe traumatic ***:Critically ill adult patients admitted to the trauma intensive care unit(ICU)between June 2013 and June 2014,referred to the nutrition support service for enteral or parenteral nutrition,and had a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D(25-OH vitamin D)concentration determination were retrospectively *** were stratified as vitamin D sufficient,insufficient,deficient,or severely deficient based on a 25-OH vitamin D concentration of 30–80,20–29.9,13.1–19.9,and≤13 ng/mL,***:One hundred and twenty-one patients out of 158(76%)patients were vitamin D deficient or severely ***-one patients(20%)were insufficient and 6(4%)had a normal 25-OH vitamin D concentration.25-OH vitamin D was determined 7.5±5.1 days after ICU ***-Americans had a greater proportion of patients with deficiency or severe deficiency compared to other races(91 versus 64%,P=0.02).Penetrating gunshot or knife stab injury,African-American race,and obesity(elevated body mass index)were significantly associated with vitamin D deficiency or severe deficiency:OR 9.23(1.13,75.40),4.0(1.4,11.58),and 1.12(1.03,1.23),Pthe majority of critically ill patients with traumatic injuries exhibit vitamin D deficiency or severe *** injuries,African-American race,and obesity are significant risk factors for *** of injury,extent of inflammation(elevated C-reactive protein concentration),or hospital admission during the winter season did not significantly influence the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency.

Lessons Learned from Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) Systems in the United States

this paper is the result of a survey and analyses of available data from 204 Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) sites in the United States. this ASR site survey included all active and inactive sites and collected both operational and construction details. the inactive sites are of particular interest here because these are the projects from which valuable lessons can often be learned. the intent of this paper is to examine the reasons for those projects that are terminated. Statistical analyses indicated that there were factors associated with terminated ASR projects: general geographic location (e.g., region), operational issue, storage cycle, casing material, and injection formation. the injection formation involves local geology and aquifer characteristics (i.e., whether the aquifer is leaky and/or unconfined, and if water can be displaced to surface water bodies or adjacent aquifers). Operational problems associated with inactive projects include well clogging, metals mobilization, a low percentage of recovery for injected water, and disinfection byproducts in the recovered water.

Effect of Ambient UV-B on Stomatal Density, Conductance and Isotope Discrimination in Four Field Grown Soybean [<i>Glycine max</i>(L.) Merr.] Isolines

An experiment was designed to test whether ambient levels of UV-B radiation affect stomatal development, decrease stomatal density, and lead to increased water-use efficiency (WUE). Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] isolines with different stomatal distribution and flavonol expression patterns were field grown under shelters that either transmitted or blocked solar UV-B. All isolines exposed to solar UV-B accumulated higher concentrations of UV-screening phenolic pigments but other responses were isoline dependent. Solar UV-B decreased stomatal density and conductance in isolines expressing a unique branched kaempferol triglycoside. Decreased stomatal density was associated with increased season-long WUE and decreased internal CO2 concentration of leaf (estimated by δ13C discrimination). We concluded that photomorphogenic responses to UV-B affected stomatal density and WUE in field grown soybean;but that the magnitude and direction of these response were associated with isogenic pleiotropic differences in stomatal distribution and pigment expression. UV-B radiation had no effect on biomass accumulation or yield in a cultivar expressing only trace levels of kaempferol suggesting that flavonol expression is not prerequisite to UV-B tolerance.

BACKGROUND the Black/African Ancestry(AA)population has a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus(t2DM)and a higher incidence and mortality rate for colorectal cancer(CRC)than all other races in the United States.t2DM has been shown to increase adenoma risk in predominantly white/European ancestry(EA)populations,but the effect of t2DM on adenoma risk in Black/AA individuals is less *** hypothesize that t2DM has a significant effect on adenoma risk in a predominantly Black/AA *** to investigate the effect of t2DM and race on the adenoma detection rate(ADR)in screening colonoscopies in two disparate *** A retrospective cohort study was conducted on ADR during index screening colonoscopies(age 45-75)performed at an urban public hospital serving a predominantly Black/AA population(92%)(2017-2018,n=1606).Clinical metadata collected included basic demographics,insurance,body mass index(BMI),family history of CRC,smoking,diabetes diagnosis,and aspirin *** dataset was combined with a recently reported parallel retrospective cohort data set collected at a suburban university hospital serving a predominantly White/EA population(87%)(2012-2015,n=2882).RESULtS the ADR was higher in t2DM patients than in patients without t2DM or prediabetes(35.2%vs 27.9%,P=0.0166,n=981)at the urban public *** analysis of the combined datasets showed that t2DM[odds ratio(OR)=1.29,95%confidence interval(CI):1.08-1.55,P=0.0049],smoking(current vs never OR=1.47,95%CI:1.18-1.82,current vs past OR=1.32,95%CI:1.02-1.70,P=0.0026),older age(OR=1.05 per year,95%CI:1.04-1.06,Pt,95%CI:1.01-1.03,P=0.0003),and male sex(OR=1.87,95%CI:1.62-2.15,Pted with increased ADR in the combined datasets,but race,aspirin use and insurance were *** t2DM,but not race,is significantly associated with increased ADR on index screening colonoscopy while controlling for other factors.

With only 5%of the world’s wild tigers(Panthera tigris Linnaeus,1758)remaining since the last century,conservationists urgently need to know whether or not the management strategies currently being employed are effectively protecting these *** knowledge is contingent on the ability to reliably monitor tiger populations,or subsets,over space and *** the this paper,we focus on the 2 seminal methodologies(camera trap and occupancy surveys)that have enabled the monitoring of tiger populations with greater ***,we:(i)describe their statistical theory and application in the field;(ii)discuss issues associated with their survey designs and state variable modeling;and,(iii)discuss their future *** methods have had an unprecedented influence on increasing statistical rigor within tiger surveys and,also,surveys of other carnivore ***,only 2 published camera trap studies have gone beyond single baseline assessments and actually monitored population *** low density tiger populations(e.g.t tiger/100 km2)obtaining sufficient precision for state variable estimates from camera trapping remains a challenge because of insufficient detection probabilities and/or sample *** surveys have overcome this problem by redefining the sampling unit(*** cells and not individual tigers).Current research is focusing on developing spatially explicit capture-mark-recapture models and estimating abundance indices from landscape-scale occupancy surveys,as well as the use of genetic information for identifying and monitoring *** widespread application of these monitoring methods in the field now enables complementary studies on the impact of the different threats to tiger populations and their response to varying management intervention.
