Artificial intelligence(AI)is the process of having a computational program that can perform tasks of human intelligence by mimicking human thought processes.AI is a rapidly evolving transdisciplinary field which integrates many elements to develop algorithms that aim to simulate human intuition,decision-making,and object recognition.The overarching aims of AI in cardiovascular medicine are threefold:To optimize patient care,improve efficiency,and improve clinical outcomes.In cardiology,there has been a growth in the potential sources of new patient data,as well as advances in investigations and therapies,which position the field well to uniquely benefit from AI.In this editorial,we highlight some of the main research priorities currently and where the next steps are heading us.

Septic shock impacts approximately 6% of hospitalized patients with cirrhosis and is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Although a number of landmark clinical trials have paved the way for incremental improvements in the diagnosis and management of septic shock in the general population, patients with cirrhosis have largely been excluded from these studies and critical knowledge gaps continue to impact the care of these individuals. In this review,we discuss nuances in the care of patients with cirrhosis and septic shock using a pathophysiology-based approach. We illustrate that septic shock may be challenging to diagnose in this population in the context of factors such as chronic hypotension, impaired lactate metabolism, and concomitant hepatic encephalopathy. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the application of routine interventions such as intravenous fluids, vasopressors, antibiotics, and steroids should be carefully considered among those with decompensated cirrhosis in light of hemodynamic, metabolic, hormonal, and immunologic disturbances. We propose that future research should include and characterize patients with cirrhosis in a systematic manner, and clinical practice guidelines may need to be refined accordingly.

Drones are increasingly used for fauna monitoring and wildlife tracking;however,their application for wildlife tracking is restricted by developing such systems.Here we explore the potential of drones for wildlife tracking using an off-the-shelf system that is easy to use by non-specialists consisting of a multirotor drone,smartphones,and commercial tracking devices via Bluetooth and Ultra-Wide Band(UWB).We present the system configuration,explore the operational parameters that can affect detection capabilities,and test the effectiveness of the system for locating targets by simulating target animals in savanna and forest environments.The self-contained tracking system was built without hardware or software customization.In 40 tracking flights carried out in the Brazilian Cerrado,we obtained a detection rate of 90%in savanna and 40%in forest areas.Tests for targets in movement(N=20),the detection rates were 90%in the savanna and 30%in the forest areas.The spatial accuracy obtained by the system was 14.61 m,being significantly more accurate in savanna(x=10.53)than in forest areas(x=13.06).This approach to wildlife tracking facilitates the use of drones by non-specialists at an affordable cost for conservation projects with limited resources.The reduced size of the tags,the long battery life,and the iower cost compared to GPS-tags open up a range of opportunities for animal tracking.

Respiratory pathogens kill more people than any other infectious agent each year worldwide.Development of novel,economically friendly,sustainable,and highly efficient materials against viruses is a major challenge.Herein,we describe a nanostructured material composed of very small crystalline phosphate copper nanoparticles synthesized using a new biohybrid technology that employs a biological agent for its formation at room temperature in aqueous media.The evaluation of different enzymes in the final preparation of the nanomaterial or even in synthetic methods was performed.Biochemical characterization revealed the formation of Cu species in the protein network.The best biomaterial synthesized using a lipase called BioCuNPs showed excellent inhibition capacity against functional proteins of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2);for example,assent 3-chymotrypsin like protease(3CLpro)complete inhibition was achieved by using 5µg/mL,or acetone(ACE)–spike protein interaction was inhibited by more than 80%in the presence of 400µg/mL of BioCuNPs.Taking these in vitro results into account,an efficacy analysis against human coronavirus 229E(HCoV-E229)coronavirus was performed.A virus reduction of 99%was obtained in 5 min.Additionally,SARS-CoV-2 virus was tested to demonstrate high efficiency,with>99%inhibition in 15 min using 500 microgram of material.To determine the wide applicability of this nanohybrid against viruses,an evaluation was carried out against a non-enveloped virus such as Human Rhinovirus(HRV-14),obtaining a virus reduction of 99.9%in 5 min.Finally,the virucidal capacity against different bacteriophages was also evaluated,obtaining an excellent inhibition effect against PhageΦX174(99.999%reduction in 5 min).

DNNGP, a deep neural network-based method for genomic prediction using multi-omics data in plants

Genomic prediction is an effective way to accelerate the rate of agronomic trait improvement in plants.Traditional methods typically use linear regression models with clear assumptions;such methods are unable to capture the complex relationships between genotypes and phenotypes.Non-linear models(e.g.,deep neural networks)have been proposed as a superior alternative to linear models because they can capture complex non-additive effects.Here we introduce a deep learning(DL)method,deep neural network genomic prediction(DNNGP),for integration of multi-omics data in plants.We trained DNNGP on four datasets and compared its performance with methods built with five classic models:genomic best linear unbiased prediction(GBLUP);two methods based on a machine learning(mL)framework,light gradient boosting machine(LightGBm)and support vector regression(SVR);and two methods based on a DL framework,deep learning genomic selection(DeepGS)and deep learning genome-wide association study(DLGWAS).DNNGP is novel in five ways.First,it can be applied to a variety of omics data to predict phenotypes.Second,the multilayered hierarchical structure of DNNGP dynamically learns features from raw data,avoiding overfitting and improving the convergence rate using a batch normalization layer and early stopping and rectified linear activation(rectified linear unit)functions.Third,when small datasets were used,DNNGP produced results that are competitive with results from the other five methods,showing greater prediction accuracy than the other methods when large-scale breeding data were used.Fourth,the computation time required by DNNGP was comparable with that of commonly used methods,up to 10 times faster than DeepGS.Fifth,hyperparameters can easily be batch tuned on a local machine.Compared with GBLUP,LightGBm,SVR,DeepGS and DLGWAS,DNNGP is superior to these existing widely used genomic selection(GS)methods.moreover,DNNGP can generate robust assessments from diverse datasets,including omics data,and quickly incorporate complex and large datas

AIm:To provide a comprehensive and more representative national data on the disease,especially on treatment options and outcomes,and to determine access of retinoblastoma patients from Luzon,Visayas and mindanao to eye care,and determine if access is associated with delay in consultation,staging and outcomes.mETHODS:Cohort study of retinoblastoma patients seen in eleven institutions located in the three major areas of the Philippines namely Luzon,Vizayas and mindanao from 2010-2020.RESULTS:Totally 636 patients,involving 821 eyes,were included.majority(57%)were from Luzon and were seen in institutions in Luzon(72%).Annually,58±10 new cases were seen with 71%having unilateral disease.median delay of consultation remained long at 9(3,17)mo,longest in patients with unilateral disease(Pm the Visayas(Pma Staging System,only 35%of patients had Stage 1 while 47%already had extraocular disease.Enucleation was the most common treatment received by 484 patients while intravenous chemotherapy was received by 469.There were 250(39%)patients alive,195(31%)dead,85(13%)abandoned,17(3%)refused and 89(14%)with no data.CONCLUSION:This study presents the largest cohort of retinoblastoma patients in the Philippines in terms of patients’and participating institutions’number and geographical location and type of institution(private and public).It also presents more comprehensive data on the treatments used and outcomes(survival,globe salvage,and vision retention rates).Delay in consultation was still long among patients leading to advanced disease stage and lower survival rate.Despite increasing capacity to diagnose and manage retinoblastoma in the country,the delay of consultation remains long primarily due to accessibility issues to eye care institutions especially in the Visayas and financial concerns.The delay was still significant that overall survival rate remain low.
