Piezometric Behavior in the Amazonian Lateritic Plateaus:Implications of Climate Changes to the Recharge of the Alter do Chao Aquifer System

Potentiometric and pluviometric datasets were evaluated to understand the behavior of aquifer recharge in the bauxite plateaus in the Porto Trombetas region, Pará, Northern Brazil. The datasets are originated from three monitoring wells and an automatic climatological station. The local groundwater is related to the Alter do Chao Aquifer System, which despite being unconfined in valley regions, is semiconfined in the plateaus areas. The aquifer recharge occurs by direct infiltration and by leakage from the aquitard in the unconfined and semiconfined portions, respectively. Precipitation declined by 27% between 2002 and 2017. The rains accumulated between February and April are the most important for the recharge processes since this period is marked by higher absolute precipitation (up to 300 mm/month) and less deviation from the historical pattern. The recharge measured by the annual fluctuation of the water table also declined significantly in the 2010-2016 period. Statistical analysis demonstrates that in the case of a permanent climate change, expressed by rainfall reducing, the aquifer recharge would diminish at a non-linear rate, which is also expected for the base flow rates. In addition, data evaluation reveals that deforestation intensely decreases the recharge rates, as observed in the Aviso Plateau mining site. The results demonstrate that the water table fluctuations must be considered when modeling Global Climate Changes since the maintenance of surface flow rates (springs, lakes and streams) depends on aquifers baseflow. The result of the statistical analysis can be also applied to regions where climate patterns are strong seasonal, as the Savannah of Central Brazil.

Radiotherapy as monotherapy or in combination with chemotherapy, has contributed to the drop in mortality rates related to neoplasms in the last 60 years. However, irradiation may promote heart damage and involvement is very common. As a result, VHD （valvular heart disease） is one of the earliest cardiovascular events post-radiotherapy. What it concerns to valve disease induced by chemotherapeutics, there are still only few studies. However, patients treated with chemotherapy in combination with radiotherapy had twice the risk of developing the disease when compared to those treated by radiotherapy alone. The heart injury caused by radiotherapy begins with damage to the endothelium and results in fibrosis and diffuses calcification primarily of the mitral and aortic valves. The echocardiography is the tool of choice to the patient’s assessment and follow-up after exposure. Prevention is the best option to face the valve damage induced by radiation.

Papillary fistulotomy vs conventional cannulation for endoscopic biliary access:A prospective randomized trial

AIM To compare the cannulation success, biochemical profile, and complications of the papillary fistulotomy technique vs catheter and guidewire standard *** From July 2010 to May 2017, patients were prospectively randomized into two groups: Cannulation with a catheter and guidewire(Group Ⅰ) and papillary fistulotomy(Group Ⅱ). Amylase, lipase and C-reactive protein at T0, as well as 12 h and 24 h after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, and complications(pancreatitis, bleeding, perforation) were *** We included 102 patients(66 females and 36 males, mean age 59.11 ± 18.7 years). Group Ⅰ and Group Ⅱ had 51 patients each. The successful cannulation rates were 76.5% and 100%, respectively(P = 0.0002). Twelve patients(23.5%) in Group Ⅰ had a difficult cannulation and underwent fistulotomy, which led to successful secondary biliary access(Failure Group). The complication rate was 13.7%(2 perforations and 5 mild pancreatitis) vs 2.0%(1 patient with perforation and pancreatitis) in Groups Ⅰ and Ⅱ, respectively(P = 0.0597). CONCLUSION Papillary fistulotomy was more effective than guidewire cannulation, and it was associated with a lower profile of amylase and lipase. Complications were similar in both groups.

Recombinogenic Effect of the Ternary Complex of Copper（II） with Doxycycline and 1,10-Phenanthroline on Somatic Cells of Drosophila melanogaster

In the search for new anti-tumor agents, exploiting features such as the flexibility of coordination modes of metals have become an alternative strategy for synthesizing pharmaceuticals. It has been shown that the CuDP （copper（II）, doxycycline, and 1,10-phenanthroline） complex cleaves DNA strands by an oxidative mechanism and by intercalating the major groove, resulting in a cytotoxic action. The objective of this study was to assess the mutageinc/recombinogenic effects of the CuDP complex in vivo using the SMART （Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test） in Drosophila melanogaster. Treatments were carried out with third instar larvae at the standard cross and high bioactivation cross using three concentrations of CuDP （6.92, 13.84 or 27.67 mM）. The mutagenic doxorubicin （0.4 mM） was used as a positive control and reverse osmosis water as a negative control. For each compound, marked trans-heterozygous and balanced heterozygous individuals were analyzed to determine the mutational and recombinogenic events occurring in the cells, We found that CuDP significantly increased the frequencies of mutant cells in both standard and high bioactivation crosses, mostly by induction of recombination. These data show that CuDP is a direct recombinogenic agent that is independent of bioactivation,

In this work, we re-assess a class of black hole solutions in a global monopole spacetime in the framework of an f(R)-gravity model. Our main line of investigation consists in considering a region close enough to the black hole, but such that the weak field approximation is still valid. The stability of the black hole is studied in terms of its thermodynamical properties, with the radial coordinate written as a power-law function with the status of the main factor underneath the stability of the model. We obtain the explicit expressions for the thermodynamical quantities of the black hole as functions of the event horizon, by considering both the Hawking and the local temperatures. The phase transitions that may occur in this system, including the Hawking-Page phase transition, are inspected with particular attention. We work out and contemplate a solution of special interest in which one of the parameters is related to the cosmological constant. Our main result sets out to establish a comparison between both the Hawking and the local formalisms for the black hole in the framework of the f(R)-gravity in the particular space-time adopted here.

BACKGROUND Achalasia is a rare benign esophageal motor disorder characterized by incomplete relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter(LES). The treatment of achalasia is not curative, but rather is aimed at reducing LES pressure. In patients who have failed noninvasive therapy, surgery should be considered. Myotomy with partial fundoplication has been considered the first-line treatment for non-advanced achalasia. Recently, peroral endoscopic myotomy(POEM), a technique that employs the principles of submucosal endoscopy to perform the equivalent of a surgical myotomy,has emerged as a promising minimally invasive technique for the management of this *** To compare POEM and laparoscopic myotomy and partial fundoplication(LM-PF) regarding their efficacy and outcomes for the treatment of *** Forty treatment-naive adult patients who had been diagnosed with achalasia based on clinical and manometric criteria(dysphagia score ≥ II and Eckardt score > 3) were randomized to undergo either LM-PF or POEM. The outcome measures were anesthesia time, procedure time, symptom improvement, reflux esophagitis(as determined with the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Questionnaire), barium column height at 1 and 5 min(on a barium esophagogram), pressure at the LES, the occurrence of adverse events(AEs), length of stay(LOS), and quality of life(QoL).RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences between the LM-PF and POEM groups regarding symptom improvement at 1, 6, and 12 mo of follow-up(P = 0.192, P = 0.242, and P = 0.242, respectively). However, the rates of reflux esophagitis at 1, 6, and 12 mo of follow-up were significantly higher in the POEM group(P = 0.014, P < 0.001, and P = 0.002, respectively). There were also no statistical differences regarding the manometry values, the occurrence of AEs, or LOS. A numerical simulation study of the performance of encoding and decoding of short optical pulse in OCDMA (Optical Code Division Multiple Access) systems under non-linear optical effects is presented. The performance of encoding and decoding short pulses is obtained through use of device FBG (fiber Bragg grating) where the codes are inserted through discrete jumps in the optical phase (±π). The multiuser interference is also the object of the present study, where a figure of merit (interference figure) is used to quantify the interference in multiuser auto and cross correlation. We evaluate the dependence of the multiuser interference for the coupling constant of FBG. Finally, the interference inserted in the autocorrelation due to nonlinear effects generated in the nonlinear switching of the coded pulse in a dual core nonlinear directional coupler is examined, where temporal broadening of pulses decoded is observed.
