Large scavengers are strongly dependent on environmental conditions and carrion distribution and abundance,so season and breeding-related factors may influence the spatial ecology of species such as the Cinereous Vulture(Aegypius monachus),the largest European raptor.Iberia holds one of the biggest populations worldwide,but some aspects of the spatial ecology of the species in this region remain unknown.In this study,17 adult Cinereous Vultures were GPS-tracked in order to study their spatial ecology during the adult phase.The average monthly home ranges(95%Kernel Density Estimation,KDE)and core areas(50%KDE)were 6543±19,935 km^(2)and 1174±4004 km^(2),respectively.The average monthly home range fidelity ranged between 50 and 73%.Differences in movement-related variables between the seasonal periods(incubation,chick-rearing and non-breeding)were found.During the chick-rearing period,the monthly accumulated distance was higher than during the other periods:3316±1108(chick-rearing)vs.1621±622(incubation)vs.1726±1159 km per month(nonbreeding).Additionally,large home range sizes were more frequent during the chick-rearing period.There are two likely causes for these seasonal differences.Firstly,chick-rearing entails a higher energetic expenditure by the parental individuals in foraging activities,so larger movements and foraging areas are expected during this period.Secondly,the flight is favoured during spring and summer due to environmental conditions.Matching chick-rearing and warm months is a great evolutionary advantage for soaring-gliding raptors,as it allows them to cover larger areas with low energy expenditure.Furthermore,six individuals tagged as nestlings highlight the philopatric behaviour of the species:vultures settle their breeding areas 54±51 km from their natal nest(range=9–138 km).

AIM To investigate the survival impact of clinicopathological factors, including pathological complete response(p CR) and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes(s TIL) levels according to subtypes, in breast cancer(BC) patients who received neo-adjuvant chemotherapy(NAC).METHODS We evaluated 435 BC patients who presented and received NAC at the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas from 2003 to 2014. s TIL was analyzed as the proportion of tumor stroma occupied by lymphocytes, and was prospectively evaluated on hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections of the preN AC core biopsy. p CR was considered in the absence of infiltrating cancer cells in primary tumor and axillary lymph nodes. Analysis of statistical association between clinical pathological features, s TIL, p CR and survival were carried out using SPSSvs19.RESULTS Median age was 49 years(range 24-84 years) and the most frequent clinical stage was ⅢB(58.3%). Luminal A, Luminal B, HER2-enriched and(triple-negative) TN phenotype was found in 24.6%, 37.9%, 17.7% and 19.8%, respectively. p CR was observed in 11% and median percentage of s TIL was 40%(2%-95%) in the whole population. p CR was associated to Ct1-2(P = 0.045) and to high s TIL(P = 0.029) in the whole population. There was a slight trend towards significance for s TIL(P = 0.054) in Luminal A. s TIL was associated with grade Ⅲ(P < 0.001), no-Luminal A subtype(P < 0.001), RE-negative(P < 0.001), PgR-negative(P < 0.001), HER2-positive(P = 0.002) and p CR(P = 0.029) in the whole population. Longer disease-free survival was associated with grade Ⅰ-Ⅱ(P = 0.006), cN 0(P < 0.001), clinical stage Ⅱ(P = 0.004), ER-positive(P < 0.001), Pg R-positive(P < 0.001), luminal A(P < 0.001) and p CR(P = 0.002). Longer disease-free survival was associated with grade Ⅰ-Ⅱ in Luminal A(P < 0.001), N0-1 in Luminal A(P = 0.045) and TNBC(P = 0.01), clinical stage Ⅱ in Luminal A(P = 0.003) and TNBC(P = 0.038), and pC R in TNBC(P < 0.001). AIM To study the effect of 18-hydroxy-eicosapentaenoic acid(18-HEPE) and 17-hydroxy-docosahexaenoic acid(17-HDHA) in a murine model of obesity/nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.METHODS C57 BL/6 mice were fed with standard chow diet(CD) or high-fat, fructose-enriched diet(HFD) for 16 wk. Then, three groups were treated for 14 d with either, diet switch(HFD for CD), 18-HEPE, or 17-HDHA. Weightand fasting glucose were recorded on a weekly basis. Insulin tolerance test was performed at the end of treatment. Histological analysis(HE and Masson's trichrome stain) and determination of serum insulin, glucagon, glucagon-like peptide 1(GLP-1), glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, adiponectin and resistin were carried out as well as liver proteins by western blot.RESULTS Mice treated with hydroxy-fatty acids 18-HEPE and 17-HDHA displayed no weight loss or improved insulin sensitivity. However, these mice groups showed a significant amelioration on serum GLP-1, adiponectin and resistin levels. Also, a significant reduction on inflammatory infiltrate was observed at both portal and lobular zones. Furthermore, up-regulation of PPARα/γ protein levels was observed in liver tissue and it was associated with decreased levels of NF-κB also determined by western blot analysis. On the other hand, diet switch regimen resulted in a marked improvement in most parameters including: weight loss, increased insulin sensitivity, decreased steatosis, restored levels of insulin, glucagon, leptin, adiponectin and resistin. However, no significant changes were observed regarding inflammatory infiltrate in this last group.CONCLUSION 18-HEPE and 17-HDHA differentially exert hepatoprotective effects through up-regulation of nuclear receptors PPARα/γ and amelioration of serum adipokines profile.

Coagulation Factor XII Congenital Deficiency in Women with Recurrent Miscarriage

Factor XII (Hageman factor) is an important protease that plays a major role in the initiation of the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis and kinin formation. It is still unclear whether factor XII deficiency causes any disorders during pregnancy. Because the main clinical feature in patients with factor XII deficiency is thrombosis rather than bleeding, low dose aspirin would be expected to prevent first trimester miscarriage and a decrease in factor XII level itself was found to be an independent risk factor in recurrent miscarriage. The woman in a 31-year-old patient, with personal and family antecedents without interest and preceding obstetrics of two spontaneous abortions in the first quarter of the pregnancy without apparent cause. In the study of infertility practiced emphasizes a partition of not more than one centimetre of length in the uterine found by hysteroscopy exploration and in the study of hipercoagulability a light deficiency of the factor XII. Himself guideline processing with low dose of aspirin (125 mgr/day) and preconception folic acid (5 mgr/day), remains expectant mother and in the week 12 of her third pregnancy itself guideline antitrombotic prophylaxis with heparin of low molecular weight by subcutaneous way. The pregnancy reaches the week 39 without incidents of interest and the expectant mother give birth of spontaneous form to health boy. Repeated abortions may be associated with reduced level of factor XII activity of unknown origin and low-dose aspirin may prevent miscarriage caused for decreased factor XII levels in patients with a history of recurrent first trimester miscarriage.

A multivariate analysis of the factors that influence the modification of sexual desire in oral hormonal contraceptive (OC) users

Objective. This work studied the influencing factors of age, level of education, family planning awareness, relationship with partner, the age at which sexual relationships were initiated, parity, the method of contraceptive previously used, the type of contraceptive pill used and the duration of oral hormonal contraception (OC) use in relation to the modification of sexual desire in OC users. Materials and Methods. Prospective study of 760 OC users at the Family Planning Center “Marina Alta” in Alicante (Spain). A logistical regression analysis was carried out to study the relative risk of reduction in libido, taking other risk factors into account. Results. In the simple analysis, women who initiated sexual relationships between 18 and 25 years of age had a lower sexual desire in comparison with women who were sexually active before the age of 18 (OR = 2.11;CI: 1.15 - 3.91). Nulliparous women had a reduced sexual desire compared with those women that had given birth (OR = 2.32;CI: 1.41 - 3.82). An OC use of between 6 months and 1 year reduced sexual desire in comparison with a use of less than 6 months (OR = 0.24;CI: 0.09 - 0.64). In the multivariate analysis, age (OR = 1.12;CI: 1.01 - 1.21) and the use of OC within an initial 6 month to a year period (OR = 0.24;CI: 0.09 - 0.64) presented a statistically significant relationship with the modification of sexual desire. The level of education, family planning awareness, relationship with partner, the method of contraception previously used and the type of contraceptive pill prescribed showed no statistical significance with the modification of sexual desire in OC users. Conclusions. Sexual desire in OC users decreases as a woman’s age increases and in an early stage of use in the first six months after beginning OC treatment.

BACKGROUND The definition of metabolic-dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)allows identification of metabolically complicated patients.Fibrosis risk scores are related to cardiovascular risk(CVR)scores and could be useful for the identification of patients at risk of systemic complications.AIM To evaluate the relationship between MAFLD and CVR using the Framingham risk score in a group of Mexican patients.METHODS Cross-sectional,observational and descriptive study carried out in a cohort of 585 volunteers in the state of Veracruz with MAFLD criteria.The risk of liver fibrosis was calculated with aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index,nonalcoholic fatty liver disease score and fibrosis-4,as well as with transient hepatic elastography with Fibroscan~?.The CVR was determined by the Framingham system.RESULTS One hundred and twenty-five participants(21.4%)with MAFLD criteria were evaluated,average age 54.4 years,63.2%were women,body mass index 32.3 kg/m~2.The Framingham CVR was high in 43 patients(33.9%).Transient elastography was performed in 55.2%of volunteers;39.1%with high CVR and predominance in advanced fibrosis(F3–F4).The logistic regression analysis showed that liver fibrosis,diabetes and hypertension independently increased CVR.CONCLUSION One of every three patients with MAFLD had a high CVR,and in those with high fibrosis risk,the CVR risk was even greater.

Study of Technical and Economical Sensitivity in Stand Alone Systems in a Rural Community

This paper presents a study of technical and economical sensitivity for different standalone system configurations with renewable and conventional sources of energy, with storage of hydrogen and batteries. The main objective is to establish the cost of the energy that is produced by such systems. The free software hybrid optimization model for electric renewables (HOMER) was used in this work. Different combinations for the generation of electricity are included in this sensitivity analysis, and the combinations of optimal systems are obtained. The tendencies of the cost of the energy produced in different conditions of the annual wind speed average and of the cost of the fuel cell are described. The cost related to the storage of hydrogen adversely affects the present systems. However, the sensitivity analysis of the cost of production of energy by means of renewable sources of energy has shown that it is possible to obtain systems whose costs of production of energy are similar to those of current systems of renewable sources.

Technical and Economic Feasibility of Using Hydrogen as Energy Storage System in Wind Farms

In this paper some of the results obtained in the research project "A Technical and Economic feasibility study of hydrogen production from solar and wind energy in the Istmo de Tehuantepec" are presented. The purpose of this study is to assess the viability of electrolytic hydrogen production in wind farms in the Istmo de Tehuantepec. Different configurations of hydrogen storage systems were simulated in local weather conditions and using local power grids. WAsP 9.1 (under license obtained by the Universidad del Istmo) and HOMER were used in this study. Using WAsP it was estimated that the annual energy produced by five BONUS 1MW/54 turbines is 18.70 GWh/year with an average capacity factor of 42.7%; efficient operation is projected for a wind farm with greater capacity. The HOMER simulation of a 500 MW wind farm in a 225 MW power grid, showed that 42% of the energy generated by the turbines is not integrated into the power grid and consequently it is used for electrolytic hydrogen production, with an annual production of 15,522 Ton at a cost of 11.60 USD/kg, for capital multipliers of 1 and 1.6 for the electrolyzer and the wind turbine respectively. It was established that by lowering the capital costs of both the electrolyzer and the wind turbine, it is possible to produce hydrogen at a cost of between 5.70 and 6.40 USD/kg, which is comparable to the current costs of conventional methods of hydrogen production. Favorable results were also obtained when a fuel cell was added to the system to introduce energy into the power grid at peak times, even when the selling price to the grid is less than 0.30 USD/kWh. In conclusion, given the current trend of rising fossil fuel prices as well as the existing and prospective technological advances in the production and storage of hydrogen, the electrolytic production of this fuel is feasible under the conditions found in the Istmo de Tehuantepec.
